    I'm so glad you uploaded this video.
    I've had my little CS-80 for years and years, and haven't had too much trouble with it (the bobbin winder broke within a week of me having the machine, to my memory, but I have a seperate winder as a work around).
    Recently the presser foot has stopped working, but because of the features of the machine, I can still sew with it.
    However, due to my own stupidity (and perhaps overtiredness), the internal thread guide collided with the sewing needle, and popped off. The leg to the guide was stuck out.
    I could not find any images on how those pieces fit together, until you panned over them. I was able to get the perfect image that showed what I needed. I was able to piece them together, and my machine is back in service.
    Despite being a lightweight, small machine, and having some strange issues, it has served me very well, and has sewn layers, and layers of fabric, quilts, and heavy denim.
    I'm certainly glad to be able to extend it's life a lottle longer.

    Loved the video and the quick assessment. How blessed are the owners of the old "pre plastic" era sewing machines. People dispose of their grandmother's sewing machine and buy these cheap Asian built junk boxes. Have an old Lydia Necchi that is seized up. It is a 70s model which means it has some (not many)plastic components. If anyone can shine some light on the seizing of these machines, it would be appreciated.

      Truly. My mom still uses her vintage machine and it works like a charm.

    I just disassembled my wife's Brother XR9550 due to a binding problem. Turns out the lower shaft bushing next to the timing belt gear is mostly seized. It is extremely stiff. She's already decided to buy a Singer with a metal frame, but I kinda want to try and fix this one just to see what I can do to make it better! Ball or roller bearings might be an improvement!

      I wanted to provide an update. I was able to remove the bushing with a gear puller and cleaned both the shaft and bushing with carburetor cleaner. They were really gunked up! I lubed everything with Zoom Spout turbine oil and reassembled the machine. It works great now! Didn't have to buy a new machine after all :)

    Wow. This is astonishing and quite a mystery. I maintain all but a few of my own machines, most of which are vintage all-metal but I do have a few modern computerized ones as well. One of them is a cheapie Brother model - not too much different than the CS-80 in this video. I'm only an amateur when it comes to maintenance but I can do the basics on a computerized machine like my cheapie because I know what not to touch - i.e. circuit boards. And of course I never let any kind of magnet near it either.
    You and I both know that plastic machines do not like very hot and or humid environments and I wonder if that CS-80 was stored somewhere overly warm. Do you suppose that could have contributed to the bobbin tire melting? Or perhaps it's the brand of bobbin tire Brother uses? It's so strange.
    And aren't both Baby Lock and Brother joined at the hip or something? And aren't their machines often built in the same factories? They make a few machines that look as though you could simply switch labeling on them and no one would know. I have a Brother Innovis VQ3000 that could easily be mistaken for a Baby Lock Crescendo if neither had manufacturers markings; the features and functions are the same, one is just more expensive than the other.
    H-m-m-m, melting bobbin tires; how very curious.

    Hi, thanks for the informative video! My machine has this exact issue where one of the bushings on the lower right is seized to the rod in my cp7500. What I did was loosen the metal bracket holding the bushing in place so now it spins with the rod and there's less friction. Is that bad for the machine? I would take it to be repaired if I thought it could be fixed but you say it can't be and it's an older model. Any advice? Thank you. 😊

    Perhaps the title of this video should include "Why you should not buy an Asian cheapie sewing machine ". I managed to unseize my 70s sewing machine. Similar problem to this one. The bushing had seized on the shaft. In the 60s and after, instead of using ball bearings, manufacturers adopted sintered steel (or brass) bushings. There are no moving parts unlike the ball bearings. Instead tiny spheres of the metal is melted in a mold (just like injected plastic) at a precise temperature that makes the spheres partially melt. This creates a porous bushing which is bathed in oil (SAE30 Mineral oil). When the shaft turns and heats the bushing, the oil is release where it is needed. When the bushing cools, it reabsorbs the oil. After decades the oil dries out and seizes the shaft to the bushing. Get yourself a hair drier and a nozzle to channel the hot air ONLY ON THE BUSHIING!. Beware of heating any plastic or non metal components nearby. Once unseized apply oil to the hot bushing. This will ensure that the oil is forced deep in the matrix of the sintered metal bushing. A drop of oil every 12 month will keep the machine working for many decades. CAUTION: This method cannot be applied to this Brother that is seized by melted rubber. You would need to dismantle the shaft to properly clean the bushing. As ARX pointed out, life is too short to save a plastic cheapie sewing machine. Consider getting an old European or US built machine pre 1990s.

    This is so amazing, thank you for your well-made videos!!!
    If I message you separately, I have a separate problem with this machine (the tension dial is stuck fast)- do you have any ideas for how to get this to rotate again?
    Just found you, and genuinely love your videos!

    Hi, thank you for the video. I have an issue with my machine a PE800 by brother, I've noticed a play, and the upper shaft moves sideways. When I push the handweel(should not be able to do this) in the upper shaft moves to the front and touches one of the plates where the lever is. I believe this is the cause for a message that I get, which says "Check and rethread the upper thread", but the thread is fine. I'll appreciate any advice. Thank you*

    • @arxmechanica
      @arxmechanica  Рік тому

      The left to right movement of your upper shaft is caused by a loose component on the upper shaft that holds it in place. It's important to have that repositioned and retightened. The check and rethread error is caused by your check spring. So either when you're threading the upper thread you're missing the check spring or the check spring is out of position or that sensor is failing. Hope that helps.

    What caused the seizing? I understand the tire liquidized etc but was it heat?

    • @arxmechanica
      @arxmechanica  2 роки тому

      Yes, heat/friction. If a bushing and shaft remain dry/without oil for too long the heat from the friction will cause the joint to swell, produce carbon and seize up. metal on metal. Like any other mechanical device, sewing machines need regular cleaning and oiling. Yearly visit to your local tech is recommended to prolong the life of your machine.

    Hello, I live in France, I have a Brother sewing machine, model fs40s, similar to the one you show in the video but with the difference that mine has a metal frame, a certain person tells me that it is folded sheet metal and not cast aluminium, I would like to know what you think of Brother machines with a frame, if it is resistant, and avoids malfunctions.

    • @arxmechanica
      @arxmechanica  2 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment. I have never seen a brother sewing machine with a folded metal main frame. They might be referring to just the area around the needle bar. Brother machines vary greatly in their quality. I have never worked on the model FS-40S, that you own, however I am familiar with the design and all of it's electronics and hardware. It looks to be a solid entry level machine. It would be suited for light duty home dec and clothing construction. I wouldn't use it for heavy materials or sewing handbags bags, however. I hope that helps.

      @@arxmechanica Thank you for your reply, the fs40s is a newer version than the fs40 (without the s) which does not have a metal chassis. Brother has brought an improvement on the resistance and on the longevity and less on the design and on the accessories like the automatic needle threader. The fs40s however remains a low-end model, the sewing machine is not for thick fabrics and for intensive sewing.

      On occasion, it would be interesting to make a comparative video between the old models and the more recent brother machines and see the improvements and defects both in terms of design and mechanics, on the one you present on your video and those which are similar, the recurring problem is that of the sleeves on the axes (shafts) which tend to seize

    Where is the fuse on these machines.
    I had a brother cs6000i and I tripped something while cleaning the machine... it caused some smoke and a really acrid smell, and the machine stopped working. I think it might be the fuse that's tripped, don't know if that could be changed.

    Where I can buy the motor of brother sewing machine?

    • @arxmechanica
      @arxmechanica  2 роки тому

      You can buy a new motor, if that is what is determined to be your issue, from a Brother sewing machine dealer. However, it will most likely be required to be installed by a qualified technician during a machine service.

    Hi and thanks for the video. I was hoping it would help me with a Babylock BL-101 Blind Hemmer. It's not turning at all. I bought it to fix it and I took the hand wheel off and the belt and there seems to be absolutely nothing in the way that would keep it from turning. I need a bit of advice in what to do next. I'd appreciate any tidbit whatsoever!

    • @arxmechanica
      @arxmechanica  4 роки тому +1

      Quite honestly you absolutely need to take it to a qualified Baby Lock technician that knows that machine specifically. It is that difficult to work on. I have worked on them throughout the years and now pretty much exclusively have them sent to the factory techs in St. Louis to have them serviced. To get everything exactly calibrated in the correct order is very challenging and close to impossible for those who don't service machines every day. So the answer... Take it do a local Baby Lock dealer and have them send it to ST. LOUIS. Thank you for your comment on my video and if you haven't, please subscribe. More videos are on the way.

      @@arxmechanica Thanks for your thoughts friend. I don't think I want to sink more money into it and the trip to my dealer is 2 hours. That's why I do some servicing myself, my machines haven't a warranty anymore which makes it way less scary. LOL. I may just part it out if I can't do anything over the next couple days. I'm sure there are times that service people can't fix a problem and that the machine needs sending out, if it's worth it. :)
