Yes, in the US we also say the same thing which we probably got from the British which is-- the King; The Prince; and the Pauper--although of course in America we have NO Kings;we have NO princes; but we do have a lot of paupers, especially nowadays. A little bit of a joke but of course it's the TRUTH too.
The thing is, Americans don't follow that saying but rather eat like a King at night time and that I think leads to our obesity problem.
Historically of course America was majority northern European and the Swedes & Norwegians & British and Germans can really pile on the weight and they will tell you that if they're being honest. SO Americans are really good at piling on the weight. And we walk less than Europeans due to the nature of our cities. WE do have a new immigrant group that is a majority displacing the Germans who used to be the majority immigrant group and they are from South of the Border and I truly think because they eat such a different menu-- shall we say-- than they ate in their country of origin, they are piling on the weight with extreme numbers of obesity beginning with the young children.
SO there's the story about America.
ALSO I know in France you have many food items that are forbidden to be sold because they are simply not good for the human body while in America almost anything someone makes can be sold and people consume it --especially because they put in things that cause the body to want more and more and more and never to be satisfied which creates obesity. Last but not least, our food is not nearly as nutritional as it was pre WWII due to our huge amounts of fertilization & herbicides excetera and depletion of the soil of all the minerals that used to go into the plant and then by extension into our bodies when we ate it. So we simply r malnourished even if we sit and eat a huge meal-- even a huge meal that is NOT processed food.
      THANKS for your great lecture.

I hadn’t seen my Nana for a few years and I’d put on about 15 kgs. I felt good and was healthy, but yes carrying too much weight. The entire family traveled 1000 kms to spend her 95th birthday with her. When I saw my Nana, I gave her a big hug, she said to me “I see you have been in the good cafe”. I just laughed and said yes I have a few too many times. It was her way of saying I look fat. I miss her, she has long passed away. But her comment stayed with me to get healthy and look after myself. I’ve lost all the unnecessary weight and feel amazing 🤩 💕 Thanks for your honesty Nana. xox

I have been doing intermittent fasting for 3 years and lost 15 kilos the first year and now I'm trim. But I eat breakfast and lunch and no dinner. This works for my me and my life. I also cut sugar, alcohol, meat and all junk. And I walk 30 minutes every day. Sounds like a lot but it is easy when it becomes your lifestyle. You do it slowly and it becomes a habit.

Love this. I am Scottish land have been living in Brisbane since 1990. My Nana used to always tell us that phrase eat like a King😂. When I was younger I used to eat slowly. Then I met my husbands family and his sister made a comment about me taking so long and to hurry up because she was starving. Since then I started eating a little bit faster and yes I have gained a bit more weight. Thank you for reminding me about that. I am going to go back to eating slowly.

When I was little my father would get very annoyed because I was always the last one to finish dinner--sometimes after everyone had left the table. (Before we children could leave the table we had to ask, "May I pleased be excused?" when we finished our meal. I wonder if anyone else does this.)
My husband and I went to dinner with with his siblings once. I ordered a salad and everyone was finished and sitting around the table waiting for me to finish eating. One of his sisters was irritated and remarked on it.
I feel like the way my husband eats is that he's been told it will be the last meal he'll ever have and that he has to eat it in 90 seconds. I don't like his table manners and it's been a trial for me to watch him eat for 50 years. I made sure I taught my son proper table manners to break the cycle of his family's bad manners. (He's not a total slob, of course, but I find his table manners very poor.)
I read somewhere that the reason why women gain weight after getting married is that they start eating the same amount that their husbands do. I think this makes sense.

I have only visited Europe, but sadly I have never lived there. I believe you have 100% accurately diagnosed the different food cultures. However, I think you are missing a huge difference: the chemical burden on the average person. In the EU, over 15,000 chemicals have been banned from food and cosmetics. In America, only 11 have been banned. In America, farmers earn subsidies for producing the maximum weight of food per area of land - NOT the most nutritious food. The AVERAGE loss of nutrition from government-subsidized poor farming practices is almost 60%. In other words, that 'healthy' strawberry or tomato has only 40% of the vitamins and nutrition that it did back in the 1930s and 40s when the government first began widespread food testing. In France, there are specific certificates assuring the purity and origin, the "provenance," of food. It's not champagne if it does not come from a vineyard in Champagne, it's not Dijon mustard unless it comes from Dijon, etc. There is no equivalent program in the US, although we are beginning to create ECOcert and other designations of safer chemical-free farming. I fervently believe that Americans are the fattest people on Earth because we have poor quality and highly contaminated food - not because Americans are uniquely gluttonous. As proof of my contention that our contaminated food is the root of the problem, I will point out that every single country that imports any significant amount of American food gets fatter and sicker. The levels of obesity and all of the diseases of obesity are very strongly correlated with the amount of American imported food is consumed. It is NOT just the culture - it's the food!

Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner (supper) like a pauper - basically means eat more in the morning, slightly less at lunch and even smaller portions at dinner (supper) - to allow your body to digest the food you have eaten that day. I agree with everything you said! I’ve been using intermittent fasting to restrict my calories. I gained 40 lbs during quarantine and I’m down 21lbs and still going. Being Mexican American my culture is very into eating rich foods. I had no idea how many calories a tamale had until this past Christmas when I looked it up, about 500 calories per tamale and we would eat several of them in one sitting 😳🤯. No no no more of just blindly eating whatever! At least with intermittent fasting if I decided to indulge a little, I give my digestive system a break. So my routine has been intermittent fasting, somewhat healthy eating and walking 15-20 min a day a few times a week. It’s simple but something that I feel is achievable for me. Thank you for sharing! I laughed a few times, especially because it did hurt my feelings when my grandmother who is 83 told me I have gained weight and she lectured me on taking care of myself. She meant well though ☺️

My son, who grew up in Canada, says that Europeans are mean. 😂 I explained to him that nobody gets offended because that's how we are, we don't sugar coat things. I started IF in 2018 and since I work until 8 PM, it works best for me to stop eating at 3:00-3:30PM and not eat until next day at around 11:00 AM. I have never felt better, I don't have a weight issue although I am post menopausal. IF is the best "diet". And the cheapest one. I also go to gym 3-4 times/week and if it's not too cold, I walk during weekends and in the summer I bike.

It's very good advice to wait 10 minutes or so when our brain may tell us to eat rather than our stomachs. Boredom, stress...food can be very comforting. Fasting (nothing major just skipping breakfast and then having a later lunch) has helped me lose weight but ALSO and more importantly, has helped my digestion "quiet" down. I have more emotional control, and kidney stones, to which I am prone to develop, have less chance to form. ❤️ Thanks for this video! I think it’s great we can ask a friend how she lost weight, maybe tell her we’re not so happy about ours, admitting we have to do some of the work to get there like she did, then just feeling empowered that you can share where your at because first admitting we aren’t happy with where we’re at is like the first step. With me it’s exercise, remembering my body likes all the different exercises and more reps, really can do it! Sticking to something you enjoy and just doing it everyday, and having fun, it really can change your outlook on the body image and the whole deal about getting to our goals, for now gaining muscle, later shedding “fat”, and having fun doing it!

Thanks Frederique! You are wonderful as always. I love all of your tips but the one that I like the most is to love your body. This is so important!
I just want to add my tip. I am a very fast eater. I am literally inhaling my food - especially when I am hungry and as a result I don't know when I am full and when to stop. So, what I am doing to eat more slowly is I eat with the small utensils. My bites are smaller, it takes me longer to finish my meal, I digest better and sometimes I even stop eating before I finish my meal because I realize that I am full.

I'm from Ukraine and we do/did have this expression (at least in my family) ! "Eat like a king in the morning, eat like a prince at lunch and eat like a poor man at night. " But I'm like you, I'm doing an intermidian fasting, so I usually do not eat breakfast and start my meal at 11 am. And by the way, beef tongue is a delicacy in my country. i need to lose some weight (I turned 50ty this year)and I have some some extra pounds) So thank you, thank you for your video. Love you and Happy New Year!!

Hello Frédérique, Yes, my grandmother used to have a saying as well about eating, "Come mucho, Come más, Come poco y duraras" (Eat a lot, Eat more, Eat little and you will last). I agree about what you say about people being "fat, overweight, or the saying "she's just healthy". It's true that people should take care of themselves. Unfortunately, some of us due to medication is hard to lose the extra 10 or 15 pounds, at one point I had lost much weight of 45 pounds. Recently, so unfortunate, I gained 10 pounds. I believe that some people need great motivation as well. That is why I found your channel for motivation and I thank you. Though, I like fresh vegetables and salads, fish and poultry but I just loose so much energy..so I went back to eating meat and I have great energy. But I will continue watching your videos, your always happy and help many people with your talent for looking and feeling good. Thank you again. God bless.

The hardest thing when food is delicious is sticking to the correct portion size. You just want to eat more 😋. I have to be very strong with myself and savour each mouthful and not have more. We eat at home most of the time so I can cook meals that are the correct portion size. It's hard eating out as a lot of the local restaurants (I live in Australia) serve huge man-sized portions. It's so tempting to clean the plate but I make myself leave some of it ... otherwise in an hour's time I will feel overfull. Or I just order an entree. By being strict with portion size I've lost 8 kg and my husband 12kg. And we eat very well.

I lived in South America for 8 years and it was common to hear women and men tell each other they looked heavier or call little children fatty( gorditos) of course, I thought it was AWFUL! They meant no harm, it is a cultural thing. We as females pick ourselves apart, from the time we are little girls, to teens and adults. I have found that intermittent fasting, eating a ketogenic diet ( more meat based, low carb, low sugar) has helped me look and feel my absolute best and I have very balanced hormones. We all must do what is best for us and what makes us feel confident. Focus on all the beautiful things are bodies do . Happy Friday Frédérique

    Great Video Frèdèrique,
I've been doing the intermittent fasting and it helps me to keep a stable weight. I'm not perfect and slip into old habits sometimes snacking in front of the TV when my husband has gone out ....I'm a work in progress. Yes my self talk has improved, improved much kinder to myself even when I over indulge, the following day I eat less and less eat without screens or books etc. Our food stories are all unique, as you say, because we come from different cultures and learned good and bad habits when growing up. My bad habit was having to eat everything on my plate, and needing a dessert, as my mother was a great cook and gave us dessert after dinner, every night. Emotional eating has been my go to soother...I'm learning to feel my feelings and not avoid or numb them with food. Through, meditation and visualization daily I'm slowly changing these old habits. Thankyou, love your honest, helpful videos Frèdèrique 😘

OMG this made me laugh!🤣 I am 2nd generation Italian. My Mom, Aunts, Cousins, Nonnie, they all noticed when I gained a few pounds, and they would blatantly voice their opinions, in front of anyone around. Also, the weird foods. I was in High School when I found out what was in Sofritto - beef lungs and heart. 🤢 I also ate liver because the way my Mom made it, it was delicious. My Mom and Dad were both very heavy on the garlic, IDK if it's a Napoletano thing, or just personal taste. My Mom loved Baccalá, but my Dad would not even allow it in the frig because of the stench. So we would go to my Nonnie's house and she would eat it there, usually around Christmas time. Fish on Christmas Eve was a big deal. I can't remember all of them now. Many Italian women get fat when we get old, but I was not overweight in my younger days. I wonder if it is just Italian-american? Because of the American junk food?

Merci Frederique, et Bonjour de Canada! 🇨🇦 There is a cookbook called “French women Don’t Get Fat” (2005, Random House New York) by a French Expat living in the U.S., Mireille Giuliano. (She was at one time president and CEO of Clicquot, Inc., and may still be a spokesperson for Veuve Clicquot Champagne, so many of the recipes feature champagne, which she insists is practically diet food!😄) In it she says French people put the emphasis on quality rather than quantity, so they would have a small amount of very good quality chocolate, rather than a whole bag of chocolate drops from the Dollar Store. The same with rich foods, bread, or delicious pastries - because they are high quality, a small amount satisfies. Rich foods also fill you up faster. She says French people work exercise into their day by walking for transportation often (not always practical in other parts of the world), and tend to have their largest meal in the middle of the day, rather than the evening, although this was changing when she wrote the book. Finally, French people use presentation and variety to make a small amount of food seem more interesting and therefore more satisfying - hence the aperitif, salad course, etc. And if they’ve indulged one day, they have vegetable soup and fruit the next to make up for it. If they gain a few pounds, the immediately work to loose them. I found her book fascinating.

At some point we must come to love/accept ourselves as we are. This is a 60 plus woman speaking. My body is hourglass I will admit and I am blessed with good genes. I"m a sz. 12, but evenly proportioned. My weight is acceptable. Not that i can eat all i want. I have a little bit of everything. Nothing in excess. Denial makes me want to splurge so I allow a cookie here or there or my favorite chcolate and exercise when I can. I kind of graze all day, not 3 big meals. I really watch my caarbs and eat all the good, healthy foods and love salads, like you do, Frederique!

This was so funny! Another great video, Frédérique! I live in the South (USA) and so much food is fried and covered with gravy. It does take loving yourself to push away from heavy meals. I do IMF too to give my stomach a break. I also crave a salad daily and feel better when I have one. Southern women won't say you are "fat" to your face however they may ask if you are feeling well. That is "code" for you've gained weight or you don't look as good as you did the last time I saw you. I worked in retail when I was in college at a women's boutique. If a customer was trying to squeeze into an outfit or picked the wrong color, we were taught to tell them "I think you can do better. Let's try this...". I am stealing your mantra "stop being fat" and putting it in my kitchen!

Some good tips. I discovered intermittent fasting in the last couple of years. I find that it’s easy if I don’t eat carbs for dinner but if I eat carbs for dinner that creates extra hunger in the morning. A good meat with greens & a cheese sauce dinner is one of my regular dinners. II also try to watch portion sizes and not finish the plate unless I need to. I am trying to eat no later than 7.00, trying for 6.00, so that my body can digest the dinner before I go to bed.
