  • I first saw one of these books at a Barnes & Noble and the name threw me off: Leeuckterm? Loochterm? Leeuchterum? Soon, I leaned the name and experienced their sketchbooks. This review is a quick peek to see if these book are for you, whether journaling, daily logs, or for fun sketching!

_I should note that part of the reason for this video was after watching someone use the book, in a way it was not designed for, complain that the books were a waste of money and they'd never recommend anyone to buy Leuchtturm products. I thought it was a bit misleading, so I thought I'd chime in with my impression, as well. To keep the reviews balanced, I guess! Still, no book is perfect for everyone. That's why I've got a hundred different brands kicking around! lol!! Cheers!_ ~ Mark

Wow!! I am so glad you posted this!! My little brother is an artist and graphic designer whos always loved to draw lighthouses in his doodles. That makes my heart happy!! I used this brand for my first "nice" bullet journal and just finished filling it up. I was in the market for a new one for the new year and was shopping around for a different brand... but after learning this... I think I'm a Leuchturm fan for life ❤

Such a helpful video, thank you. Good explanations, especially the name - confusion dispelled! The fact that I absolutely love lighthouses makes me love these notebooks/sketchbooks even more! Thanks so much. 😊

Lighthouse! Yay, I learned something today. 💙 Loitch-term is how I’ve been pronouncing it…kind of close, but with an Aussie accent. 😂 They’re lovely books, I like the smooth paper in them. Have a great week too!

Hmmm, so let me be of help, here ;) "eu" is pronounced like the "oi" in "oink" or "Oi- Punk" in German, the "ch" is probably the most tricky one, that voiceless uvular fricative doesn't have a equivalent in English, if any there are similarly pronounced consonants sounds in Hebrew, Arab and Georgian, but if you know a bit of German, it's pronounced like the "ch"'s in "ich" or "mich" :3 Oh, and the "u" in "Turm" is pronounced like the "ou" in "you" :D The whole word translates to lighthouse in English and yes this brand's notepads and sketchbooks are kinda well known here as well. A lot like a Moleskine, maybe :)

Thank you, LunaBlanca1805! I appreciate the assistance. It's funny, my friend who is from the suburbs of Berlin told me how to say it. "Loishterm" he said. "Loisht" as in "light" and "term" as in "tower." I wonder if there are different dialects in Germany, much like the US has different dialects in the south versus the north, and even where I live in Boston, people speak drastically different in the north part of the state versus the southern part (in the north I am "Mark," where as the central area I am "MahK" and in the south I am "Moark." LOL!!!!) Thanks again for sharing your knowledge! Stay well! :)

@@MDCampbell just scrolling through the comments! I can reassure you that Germany has A LOT of dialects due to how split and tiny the different kingdoms(?) (with all of their own languages of course) were before Germany was a thing. Dunno if that makes sense but all in all we got a heck ton of dialects :)

Hi Mark, I hope you are well. It's great to see you making videos as I started missing them :) For me personally the best part is you speaking German. You do really well! I've been using Leuchtturm notebooks and calendars for many years in my personal life and job actually and love them. I was a bit surprised that it didn't do well with the gel pen and ink as I use (different line) mine with fountain pen and it doesn't bleed through. Maybe they have some that has paper that is better suited for wetter media? Until now I didn't pay much attention to it, but will now for sure. Thanks for testing it out and sharing it. I enjoyed this video so much. Have a wonderful day!

Thank you so much for your kindness, LanaGoesArt! It's always a treat to hear from you. Funny, my son is stationed in Germany and will probably come home speaking far more German than I've _ever_ understand! lol! I will say, it's interesting to use a product for years, but never really know their history until you have a reason. Leuchtturm1917 employs over 500 people and while many of their products are made in Asia, the design and production continues to be overseen directly by their quality assurance team. As for paper that is better suited for heavier ink, they definitely have a broad range, including heavier stock. For me, in the future, that's probably what I'd aim for. I hope you and your loved ones are all doing well! ~ Mark

You son is in Germany? That's awesome! I'm glad he's stationed at a pretty safe space now and German isn't that bad. There is lots of history around and depending where he is, it might be super close. I live in Germany and am still amazed by the amount of historical buildings. Maybe your son is interested in it too and if not, there are other things to enjoy too. :D I bet he drinks lots of beer now. :D
Yeah, Leuchtturm has many great products. It's for sure a light house for German paper industry, they cater more to stationary demands, while Hahnemühle is more the art paper producer here. But Leuchtturm definitely has some sketchbooks in their lines. Have a great day with your family, stay safe!

Funny, 1MightyR, I keep a Hand•Book Travelogue Journal under the seat of my car! lol! I don't know what other people think of their books, but they are my absolute favorite. I have another one sitting right here in front of me. I was just using it today! The Lechtturm book is a bit fancier than the Hand•Book, but the paper in the Hand•Book can handle a wider variety of mediums, which I love. Sadly, they've gone up in price online, which I hope changes. Thank you for taking your time to check this out! Be well! ~ Mark

I so very much liked your video and presentation of this notebook. I'm trying to find something to replace my yearly Moleskine journal. One thing - that piece of paper at the end (grid/ lined) is not a sample what they have to offer. It is used for the purpose of writing evenly on a plain paper. You put it behind the page you itend to write on and voila! you have lines to guide you :)

Not sure if you knew this as you didn’t mention in your video but they make these journals with three different types of paper weight, 80 gsm, 120 gsm, and 150 gsm. Per another UA-camr sharpies and other alcohol markers still show through, but you can paint with watercolors and using water color pencils, etc. I think the 150 may be more of a mixed media.

In the first place I wanted to thank you for your helpful an fun to watch videos. I follow your channel since years and I absolutely adore your content and personality as far as I can judge it.
    Enough compliments for now ;)
Just an addition: The grid & line page that you showed in the beginning can be used as a guide. The lines are printed thicker than real pages in a notebook so you can lay this page underneath your working page as you would for tracing. So you can take notes in a clean way without using a ruler and a eraser first. :)
These pages can be found in most blank paper sketchbooks and also blank exercise books for school in Germany.
I know it's not important for your review but maybe you like the little extra knowledge 😅

Thank you for taking your time to check this out, ismail abdelhamid! It is always good to hear from you! As for comparing to Moleskin, they are very similar with certain books. Moleskin often has a similar weight paper in their books which I would expect would react the same. The Moleskins that I have are smaller, but I really enjoy them. Thank you again and I hope all is well with you! ~ Mark

Thank you for your video. I am not really a buyer of sketchbook being that i make my own, i am more interested in the paper that is being used. What is favourite paper weight to sketch in, I like 80lbs.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  2 роки тому +2

Thank you for checking this out, Made by Dawn! I hope you are staying healthy and happy! My absolute favorite paper is 80lb or higher with a light tooth. I'm not a fan of cold pressed papers, but rather prefer hot pressed for it's smoothness. For me, my favorite paper to paint on is Arches. My favorite sketchbooks range between Fabriano, Stillman & Birn, Hand•Book Travelogue books, Crescent, and many others. I don't prefer really heavy paper for sketching, as it feels wasteful. Leuchtturm, like Moleskin, is a good middle place with a lighter weight, that I can doodle in or just enjoy without frustration. Knowing it bleeds through, well, one must be cautious. lol! Enjoy your summer and again, thank you! ~ Mark

Way to expensive for what it is. Paper is too thin. I like Daler Rowney simply sketchbooks the hard cover doesn't last forever but it lasted me almost to the end, which is about 8 months of daily use. I payed 3 dollars for it in Walmart. Leuchtturm is a very nice looking book don't take me wrong only if you can afford it. I would not buy it for myself. It can make a great gift for someone. I'll take it.

Thanks for your thoughtful feedback, Moonlight Gator! Always good to hear from you. I agree that many books like this are often too expensive, especially in comparison with other brands. Daler Rowney makes some nice books, and like you said, they are at a very attractive price point which is great for casual artists, students, or anyone not wanting to shell out a lot for the bigger brands. The Fabriano books I bought recently are ridiculously wonderful, but for the price... well, definitely a luxury item for those who can afford it. Stay well and thank you again! ~ Mark
