Two big influences on Frank Herbert and Dune are even more obvious when you think about the time frame. Dune was published in 1965. The Foundation trilogy was published from 1951 to 1953. Lawrence of Arabia came out in 1962. You get a galactic empire with a secret order guiding the evolution of society from one source, and the aristocratic outsider rallying the desert nations in revolt from the other. There's obviously a Dune influence on Star Wars, but I think Asimov's influence is even stronger -- galactic empire, robots, and a secret society with mind powers.
Hi guys! I have never read a book in my life before i saw your tiktoks im currently reading the red rising trilogy and just bought mistbourn.... Im taking dune is next. Thanks for being a great influce Ill keep on watching your vids!!!
Just want to point out for everybody who haven't read Dune that I strongly believe it is obligatory to also read Dune Messiah to actually understand the message here. I though Dune was good when I read it, but after the second book it reached legendary status. I was so intrigued I read along, with The God Emperor being my favourite in the series so far.
I've only been a subscriber for a few weeks now, but catching up on episodes while at work has been a delight. The friendship between you two reminds me of a childhood friendship I miss very much. Thanks for doing what you guys do, and I'm looking forward to what you have planned for the 100th episode!
Dune was one of the first SFF books I read when getting back into reading as an adult a couple of years ago. I enjoyed the plot, but struggled with the way it was written - it felt very dense, especially the philosophical aspects. I started Messiah but couldn't get more than 30 pages in. Over time, I've come to think of it much more positively than i found the reading experience, and I loved Villeneuve's adaption. Maybe I need to read it again.
After watching Dune Part 1, I listened to the audiobook last summer to prepare for Dune Part 2. Loved the book. However, the movie went on to be delayed from the winter of 2023 to March of 2024. Still had a good time listening to the book. Great video as always! Cheers fellas.
The Hobbit adaptation did the inner monologue really well. The shining example in my mind is in the book when Gandalf tells Bilbo something like “true courage is knowing when to take a life and when to spare one” you can actually get the feel of this when Bilbo is wearing the ring and holding the dagger to Golum’s throat in the cave. You can see the intention to kill shift in his face to empathy and then he leaves Golum alive which has a HUGE impact on Frodo and Sam later on. They didn’t even have to use the quote to convey the message
I bought Dune the first book months ago, and Ive finally gotten around to reading it and I see how people love it. I'm about 2/3rds done the first book.
My husband and I just watched Dune Part 1 again to prepare for the second. I am now convinced I need to read the book before the end of the month to get the best experience when I go see Pt. 2. Thank you!
i watched the movie before reading the book, loved the movie as it is but it felt like a preview or like trailer for the book. i agree also it is impossible to make a movie of this book but denis villenueve himself is a fan of the book so i think he got what the book was telling and condensed it into a film, tho im still sad about the dinner scene being cut, wish they released a four hour directers cut or smt😂 also hi! as a lady of the audience💅🏻
Personally I found the first 1/3 thick and difficult to get through, but once I got through that initial set-up and world-building it really took off. About to start Children of Dune (3rd book). I’ve heard God Emperor of Dune (4th book) is the best in the series.
Dune is such a great read! I would always recommend it to anybody that is a fan of sci-fi. Interested to see how the second part of the movie is going to get adapted. This part of the book that is about to get adapted is where, at least for me, can get dense and becomes hard to adapt. Regardless, dune (and asimovs ‘foundation’ series) has influenced so much media in general that it makes it a fun read.
I feel like Dune is one of those series (not just the first book, but especially the first) that asks a lot of the reader but pays it back ten-fold. People get bogged down by how much is going on, the ideas, etc, and don't actually appreciate the execution. But if one tries to read it quickly or without paying attention, much of its value is quickly lost. Then those same people claim, " not very good" or "I don't like it because it's about this" when actually they just missed the point.
To me, even though I agree with the Star Wars, Song Of Ice and Fire and Avatar influences, to me the most obvious Dune influenced series is non other than the Wheel Of Time. Aiel - Fremen, Aes Sedai - Bene Gesserit, Rand - Paul... To me The Shadow Rising is as much an homage to Dune as The Eye of the World was an homage to Fellowship of the Ring. Edit: They do mention it in the video, I wrote the comment before getting to that part 😅
I'm reading through The Wheel of Time VERY quickly and loving it so far (I love seeing Austins reactions to each book lmao) but looking for something to break up the series later in the year and already settled on Dune. This video is making me want to read it as soon as my copy arrives in the mail this week 😳
i hesitate to read Dune for like year, bcz i hear all time from booktobers how writing style is hard, and that you are lost for first 100 pages or half book..and last year i finaly decided to give a try,and i must be honest,as guy who have rly hard time remembering names and dates i never felt lost,i got it all from start, reading style is one of the best i read, specialy parts when Paul have visions..

Idk if somebody has said this but aside from the literary influences, Herbert was influenced recent history in North Africa and Middle East during his time. He was a journalist and must have certainly took an interest in the topic. He talks about the fremen jihad, for example, and the term "Mahdi" is a real world thing which is a prophesized political and religious leader which will lead the Muslims into a golden age during the end times. Several political leaders, many of whom are part of Middle Eastern, North African, and Muslim independence movements, have claimed to be Mahdi during the recent history at the time of Dune's publication, so it was written with the assumption that people reading that book would get a foreshadowing cause they knew what Mahdi meant: shit's about to go down.
I’ve all 6 of Frank’s Dune books. The last one ends on cliff hanger. His son wrote 2 more to finish out the story but I’m so scared to read them because I’m worried they won’t be good because I love dune so much.
Hope you guys cover Messiah at some point. It really feels like that story was the ultimate point of the first book. I assume everyone's gonna be reading it soon, though, since Denis Villeneuve wants it to be the ending to his trilogy.
Hard to go wrong - I (austin) think your Red Risinf, The Martian, and Project Hail Mary are probably better starts to dip your toeninto sci-fi since they don’t plunge you into the deep end like Hyperion and Dune do
I can't read Dune again because after seeing Dune pt1 I was disappointed how short Duncan Idaho's part was. But I just saw pt1 again a year later and was impressed. I guess I was so disappointed that I didn't pay attention to the rest of the movie. So I'd rather watch pt2 without reading Dune again.
In college, I had a friend who was a literature major, and he always wanted me to read books used in movies. And he was also an experiential pot smoker, trying to talk me into watching the movie after having read the source book - "But it's better when you're HIGHT" argument (I faked smoking his pot while I had my pipe tobacco going - distracting him with Gandalf smoke rings)… So - How about the Shrooms Frank was doing, psilocybin (naturally occurring psychedelic compound produced by several fungi), and that was the secret behind spores mélange, as the main ideas behind it while laying on the floor, tripping. The psilocybin "blue-water" as Dune: water of liife, 'maggots' consuming and moving through the fungi used: as the sand-worms in sand protecting the spice "fields" of 'sand-trout'...etc???
I just recieved my copy of Dune in the mail today. I think im gonna be reqding ot soon. Cutrently, I'm 30 % into Empire of Silence (some people said it's heavily inspired by Dune)
I started the year with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz which was considerably darker, and overall, more entertaining than the movie. Dune is my current challenge. And I say challenge as I bought the Trilogy hardcover and it is indeed a challenge to hold the bloody thing. But so far I have been greatly entertained, and as I am coming from the movie adaptions, it is really interesting to finally read the source material. Specifically, to learn what was adapted well, terribly, or just left our entirely.
I would recommend stopping after the second book. Or the fourth book. I did not get much out of books five and six, they go in a very bizarre direction.
Great vid as always boys just finished the shadow rising and can’t wait to hear Austin’s objectively wrong opinion on if he still sticking with the series.
I’m reading dune currently at night with my fiancé, but I would say my intro to SF was Bradbury and Huxley. So. It could still be adjacently broken. 🤣🤣 (it’s great so far, just very early on)
Something tells me that once he's read Dune, Austin will have a similar response as he had with Hyperion: he was eager to read it at first, but once he finished it he was kind of "meh". I hope I'm wrong. Having said that, I am currently a +100 pages into God Emperor, and I can say that this series is unique. The amount of reflections, quotes and ideas inside are just mesmerizing. The first book is great, but I deeply fell in love with Dune Messiah; and Children of Dune is also a very good closure to the trilogy. It is an experience worth living
That’s great to hear - Rich might need to read on soon because the rest of the series seems right uo his alley as well. And hopefully I do end up really liking it!
I think of the Bene Gesserit as the prototype of both Jedi and Aes Sedai. I don't buy that the movie adaptations shouldn't have a monologue. Dexter did it brilliantly. Also, the newer movie cut out so much plot, it wasn't fun
Dune is one of the greatest novels ever written! Anyone who hasn't read it and likes sci-fi and loves when there are parrales with the real world, must read this novel!
Requested Dune from my library but of course there’s a waitlist I should be reading it in late April/ early may. Also I picked up Hyperion from the library today and it’s massive, Richard’s copy is tiny compared to it 😭😭 I also got The Black Prism and All Systems Red.
I stand by Avatar: The Blue People One, being a great movie. It took a simple plot and put it in a big spiritual alien world of wonder. Unless i'm forgetting something glaringly obvious, there is no better realised alien world in movies than in Avatar. Also i just have a great time watching it. Also unobtainium is actually a term used by scientists to refer to unobtainable elements. It still doesn't sound cool, but it makes sense.
@@2ToRamble I really like both, but i've only seen the second one once so far, so I'm less sure of myself when talking about it. I remember enjoying how almost nature documentary like it was. It had a beginning and an end, and the middle was just kind of exploring more of the world. I liked that. The first one i've seen a few times though and i like it every time. There's just a really satisfying progression from obligation, to curiosity, to romance, to loyalty. It starts off with small enough beginnings and ends with an all out war. It feels like a true epic every time i watch it, and that feels good.
I know I'm crazy and "wrong", but I just read Dune last year and found it overrated. It's good, but not great. The character is the definition of the ultimate Mary Stu. Never does anything wrong and is always messiah-level amazing. I respect it for what it is, but it gets a rating of "meh" from me.
What? However you feel about the book cannot be wrong or right, but it just is what it is. But your characterization of the "Marty Stu" character is way off in my opinion. He's neither a messiah nor a real hero, but rather flawed and egotistical. He is a cautionary tale, not an inspirational one.
I really wish more people like the blue people Avatar. Of course The Last Airbender is miles better (although theyre also fairly different) but I definelty enjoyed it, to my credit though, I was a teenager when it came out and when i watched it in theatres.
I don’t know if you are aware but Dune is unfinished series. It has one or two complete major arcs so if you read first 3 or 4 books you can stop. WOT is huge but it has been completed and the ending is regarded as quite satisfactory. Also WOT is more about characters and Dune is primarily about concepts. WOT is written in more accessible and modern English, Dune is kind of dense IMO. Not really recommending any of these actually but maybe you can decide easier now?
The first Dune book is a pretty fast read. I haven't even touched the second one yet. I'd start there if you plan on seeing the movie. The wheel of time show is not worth your time and you have your whole life to read the series
Dune is amazing and has had tremendous effects on sci fi since its publishing but Richard did exaggerate a lil bit. A couple of the things he said dune did first are from foundation and a couple are silly like “revolution of the oppressed” as if dune was the first book ever to feature a suppressed lower class revolting
I hated Dune. It took me forever to finish it because of how much I hated it. But I think people should read it so they can appreciate how it influenced writing! 😊 Also, the movie sucks lol... But you can't make a movie about what's happening in someone's thoughts.
@@2ToRamble definitely! I hope it's more enjoyable for you than it was for me 😊. I don't think I've ever hate-read a book. Lol. I did enjoy parts of it. The infamous quote about "fear being the mind killer" really resonated with me.
Reading it now and I’m finding it hard to finish. Especially when I have Alloy of Law and Priory of the Orange Tree waiting for me. I’m in the Muad-Dib section and it just isn’t picking up for me. Does this make me a bad book person? Lol
I’ve been hating on Dune since I’ve watched the movie, and after watching this I’ve been convinced to add it to the TBR. Although I cannot forgive y’all for HATING on Avatar 😭😭😭
See this where I'm conflicted, dune is great, I respect it. I love Sci-fi. But man dune is not for me. I have a hard time with how long it takes for things to happen. But maybe the audio book would be better? I also had a hard time with the movie..... Idk I like everything in dune just the execution is not my cup of tea
@@2ToRamble I would say it's a bit of both, my wife read it and she showed me a fight scene and it was about 6 pages before something happened. Not that it was bad, just I feel there could be better word efficiency? I have conflicting feelings, because I really want to like Dune
Okay, Discussion: 1. I didn't know that about ASOIAF... Can you send me a reference please? 2. "What came before Dune" is a very important question... Now, you see, the question "who did it first" really bothers me because some writers (not all, just some) may draw inspiration from old myths and legends and the old epics (like Tolkien and Beowulf)... We are all literally using the same sources over and over again. The motifs we use have roots deep in our history and nature as human beings... That's why we see so many similarities between different works of art throughout the ages. You can't for example say that all stories that have a hierarchical structure have learned it from Dune. ( Just an example, I know you don't believe that :)) ) And the revolution trope? Come onnnn. If I, a woman who's living under the oppression of IR, write a fantasy story about an uprising, a revolution, are you going to say It's Dune's influence or that author's influence or the other one? :/ And so on... Yes, Dune is a very good book (hopefully), and it's on my 2024 TBR pile... but, as Austin said, it's mostly about who did it better... Ugh, not even that... it's all about the author's unique voice. You know what I mean? + Paul Atreides is literally called "Mahdi", and Mahdi, in Shia Islam, is a promised savior... You see??? Motifs! + It is only natural to be inspired by other authors' works of course... BTW, I love your channel ✨️🏹
How do you all not like the Movie. I haven't read the Book yet, But watched Dune part 1 and it was amazing, it was really really good, ofcourse, the Book is superior....... But the Movie was so good and it wasn't that hard to understand either...... Found it to be rather normal exposition. The visuals, the DOP, the action, the acting was so good.
@@2ToRamble like, I feel like you couldn't have asked for a better adaptation than this. I couldn't watch it in theaters, and my only regret is not watching it on a big screen. Personally I loved the movie very much much
yea thats fair, i'm definitely in the minority for not liking it. i'll likely rewatch before part 2 as well to see if I just watched the movie at a bad time in life maybe that's why lol@@pranavprasad8793
Yeah I uh I have been trying really hard to read Dune. I like everything people tell me about it I just am really having a hard time rn. I wonder if there's any other books that could help me warm up for it because I feel I just can't grasp what's being talked about yet no matter how hard I'm trying.
Maybe try “A Fire Upon the Deep” first or “Hyperion” which Richard mentioned in the video - we’ve both read those and they might be more ‘readable’ if you get what I mean before starting Dune?
@@2ToRamble thank you so much. I actually am getting close to done with Hyperion about 80 pages till the end having started reading it when I put down Dune in frustration. I'll look up A Fire Upon The Deep as well. Thank you for the recommends. 😊
I’ve heard Dune decreases heavily after the first book. Should I just ignore the others and just read the first one and pretend it’s a stand alone or are the other books worth it?
Look at it like a trilogy, not a standalone. You totally have to read the second book after the first. The second book is very short too. Then decide if you wanna continue. Ignore the others.
Not sure what you mean by reading level but I think it is written pretty easily but i heard it’s very intense sci fi which could make it harder to understand
I can tell you as someone who thought they had a high reading level this book does take a bit of grasp on other subjects other than sci fi. You need to have a little bit of political understanding as well as philosophical, metaphysical, and religious study that even I(a lifelong religious studies obsession freak) don't quite have. Idk if there's another book that could help me warm up to it but if you don't believe your reading level is high maybe hold off on Dune as I have.
Based on what Richard told me, I think this one takes a bit of a higher reading level as others have said in this thread - Id hold off on this in the meantime and build up to it by reading some other sci-fi beforehand
Also, ok, take what I'm saying with a grain of salt because I'm a certified Wheel of Time hater™(I've read the books, I did my due diligence) but I feel like saying The Wheel of Time "references" dune might be understating just how much content was taken from that novel to constitute Robert Jordan's story. To put it nicely, I'd say it's more of The Wheel of Time is a fantasy retelling of Dune, it's not just referencing it.
In my opinion dune isnt good but the world building is so fucking cool and interesting that it carries the book a LOT. Like ive spent hours on the wiki reading about the world, its such a cool concept
Mahdi is not the Messiah. In Islam, Jesus(Peace Be Upon Him) is the Messiah. Mahdi will lead a resistance against the forces of the Antichrist until the second coming.
Oh, and of course each relies on control of a vital resource: with Foundation it's nuclear power, Lawrence of Arabia it's oil, and Dune it's spice.

Your statement about Game of Thrones in the beginning of the video is completely accurate and I’ve been telling my friends this for years.

Dune is staring at me from the shelf... telling me to read it before Part II comes out. Also, your boy is a patreon now
We are happy that you joined us! 😀
Alright Richard, you convinced me! Dune is in my TBR for February
The first Dune book and the second Dune book are the same book split into two, in my opinion. YOUR MIND WILL BE BLOWN BRO.
Waiting for the Hyperion follow up!
I've read Dune, and can say these 5 reasons were very well thought out and put together.

Great vid as always boys just finished the shadow rising and can’t wait to hear Austin’s objectively wrong opinion on if he still sticking with the series.
😁😂😂
I’m reading dune currently at night with my fiancé, but I would say my intro to SF was Bradbury and Huxley. So. It could still be adjacently broken. 🤣🤣 (it’s great so far, just very early on)
Richard you need to read GOT!
I think I have heard the name before but this is the first time I have actually heard what it is about
Oo awesome, what donya think about it now?
Dune is one of the greatest novels ever written! Anyone who hasn't read it and likes sci-fi and loves when there are parrales with the real world, must read this novel!
🫡 well said
Requested Dune from my library but of course there’s a waitlist I should be reading it in late April/ early may. Also I picked up Hyperion from the library today and it’s massive, Richard’s copy is tiny compared to it 😭😭 I also got The Black Prism and All Systems Red.
Some great books!!
Were you a fan of the 1st or 2nd one, or both of them?
@@2ToRamble I really like both, but i've only seen the second one once so far, so I'm less sure of myself when talking about it. I remember enjoying how almost nature documentary like it was. It had a beginning and an end, and the middle was just kind of exploring more of the world. I liked that.
The first one i've seen a few times though and i like it every time. There's just a really satisfying progression from obligation, to curiosity, to romance, to loyalty. It starts off with small enough beginnings and ends with an all out war. It feels like a true epic every time i watch it, and that feels good.
fair!@@rextitan
Lmao I never made the Avatar Dune connection before that's hilarious. Also if you're into anime I felt Attack on Titan was quitr similar
I think what the new Dune movies will do the same for the book that LOTR movies trilogy did for the books
Did you like the first or second movie better?
OK, so when is Austin starting to read the book? I need major motivation to do it, so when you start, I start (I'm intimidated). IT'S ON YOU, AUSTIN!
You are behind. He has started already 😳

😁
I'm Sorry but when I saw Avatar I didn't think about Dune at all. And Dune and Lord of the Rings are my favorite books of all time.
Is Dune a standalone? I know there are set up prequels that don't necessarily have to be read to understand the book but Idk If that's it.
There are more books in the series after Dune!
This video didn't need to be 40+ minutes. I was sold after the first 9 minutes.
I saw the whole episode though.
🙏🤝
Hmm I was about to start the wheel of time, but might look at Dune first.
What do people recommend?
I don’t know if you are aware but Dune is unfinished series. It has one or two complete major arcs so if you read first 3 or 4 books you can stop. WOT is huge but it has been completed and the ending is regarded as quite satisfactory. Also WOT is more about characters and Dune is primarily about concepts. WOT is written in more accessible and modern English, Dune is kind of dense IMO. Not really recommending any of these actually but maybe you can decide easier now?
@@Morfeusm appreciate the response 😊
The first Dune book is a pretty fast read. I haven't even touched the second one yet. I'd start there if you plan on seeing the movie. The wheel of time show is not worth your time and you have your whole life to read the series
Yeah read dune first once you start wheel of time it will take a really long time to finish
I pray to Shai-Hulud that if y'all ever read my novel you'll describe it as full chub sci-fi.
Should I read the book if I've already seen the first movie?
Yes absolutely!
im 150 pages into the book and I have put it on pause a couple of times now......im still gonna try but dang it is slow lol for my taste
Let us know if you end up pushing through and your thoughts!
50 Shades of Grey review WHEN⁉️💯
Sooner than you’d want 😭😂
@@2ToRamble just waiting on you to finish that 5th reread I presume
4th but who's counting??@@friedchickensavage
I hated Dune. It took me forever to finish it because of how much I hated it. But I think people should read it so they can appreciate how it influenced writing! 😊
Also, the movie sucks lol... But you can't make a movie about what's happening in someone's thoughts.
I (austin) also had that gripe woth the movie - a lot of “looks” in the distance that didnt convey much at all to me. But reading Dune now!
L Take. Avatar is mid
Ahh, would you think it’s mostly a prose and plot issue for you combined, or mostly the plot and pacing?
@@2ToRamble I would say it's a bit of both, my wife read it and she showed me a fight scene and it was about 6 pages before something happened. Not that it was bad, just I feel there could be better word efficiency? I have conflicting feelings, because I really want to like Dune
I think it's the pacing. His prose is all right. He's not a bad writer. Just the pacing didn't jive with me. But I recognize what it did for sci-fi. 😅
40k the biggest ‘Homage’ to Dune. Half way through and no ones mentioned it.
Ah didnt know that!
Okay, Discussion:
( Just an example, I know you don't believe that :)) )
And the revolution trope?
Great discussion points - I (austin) mostly agree with everything ya said!
Might have to do a review to share thoughts!
no problem!@@Lucifer_isthereal_god
I’ve heard Dune decreases heavily after the first book. Should I just ignore the others and just read the first one and pretend it’s a stand alone or are the other books worth it?
Look at it like a trilogy, not a standalone. You totally have to read the second book after the first. The second book is very short too. Then decide if you wanna continue. Ignore the others.
@@TheMagicMailman So just the first two? thanks!
The problem with Dune is that it's a heavy read. You have to be really invested in it to continue reading it.
I want to read DUNE, but my reading level is not high, so can I read it? Please reply
Not sure what you mean by reading level but I think it is written pretty easily but i heard it’s very intense sci fi which could make it harder to understand
But I haven’t read it yet so 🤷♂️
@LuzzyStef i heard it too, that's why I asked.
Wrong! Game of thrones is NOT a fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire is :P
True lol
Just watch the movie last night! 😂 don’t yuck my red rising!
As a fellow WOT hater I approve of this lol
@@2ToRamble WHICH ONE OF YOU SAID THIS LMAO
It's me, austin. I'm the hater, pls don't expose me like this. Let's keep this hidden between us lolol@@redmadhatter03
@@2ToRamble honestly i love this for you
Isn’t there a reason (no spoilers) in the Dune history why the future the future tech is so stunted?
Yes I (austin) believe so - but have not read yet so take that with a grain of salt!
You really need to read the Sun Eater series, it is dune on steroids
Thats our video coming out tomorrow, perfect timing!

It's because of people like you that Herbert had to write Messiah
