Hi Ian was sad to see you taking home such small codling even though as you say they were sizable and you put a few back, I'm 61 and have have always enjoyed my beach fishing from a young boy going with my dad to now, My neck of the woods Codling are few and far between due to over fishing from the greedy trawlers, who would of thought the sea could be scratched dry in the 50 years or so since its hay day. I envy the fishing you have still got in the west country. Always watch you video's which inspire me to keep going. Tight lines
Hi nice to hear from you and glad you watch the videos!! I’m sorry you feel upset about us taking a few fish for the table. As you say we put them back once we had a few for our family to eat…. I enjoy eating sea fish and keep or return fish in a responsible way to sustain fish stocks. In a year of great glut of codling like this one I feel it’s perfectly reasonable to take a few fish. I hope you will continue to watch the channel and that you will have luck fishing your local water! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Doesn't seem to have changed since I fished there 60+ years ago. We used to catch mainly Bass. Best night of my life in February early 1970's so many stars.
Hi Anthony Chesil same now as it has ever been I think except the fish stocks probably a lot less now. We certainly were lucky to catch it on a good day for the video! Light pollution is definitely low there and I agree the night sky can be spectacular at times!! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Good little session there seems to be lots of those small ones about down south,, jst waiting for an another decent easterly wind and it's time for the Arbroath area (70-90 ) miles up the road been a bit patchy for me recently with only a few fish for a lot of physical effort getting to proven marks in good conditions only to find them empty of fish,, but if you catch it right it can be tremendous ,, cheers 👍

Great session. Nice to see codling go back. You mentioned the tides. The tides around Weymouth and portland take some learning. Even after high water it can still be anything up to 2 hours you get slack water and then the tide flowing the other way. Keep them coming guys.

Hi Derek lovely to hear from you! It actually wasn’t as bad as I’ve seen but there is always a rogue wave waiting for the unwary angler. It’s been a better cod season than usual for which we are all grateful! Thanks for watching cheers ian
Cracking session take it that was Saturday, I was the other end friday afternoon and evening with very similar results, best fishing in years, well done keep the videos coming, tight lines👍
Hi Chris yes we thought we made a mistake not going Friday but had to dig bait on Friday. We thought Ferrybridge would be too weedy Saturday so decided on Abbotsbury…. It was getting badly weeded as we left….. huge rafts like tennis courts!! Glad you enjoyed the video thanks for watching cheers ian
Hi Paul me and Chris going to our local beach at Brean on Friday hopefully for our first codling there this season…. The strong winds forecast this week should bring in a few with a bit of luck! Tight lines for your trip cheers ian
Yet another cracking video Ian. There are some half decent Codling showing up here in North Wales at the moment, so hopefully this season will be a better one than the last few years. Personally like you have shown, I think the Codling feed closer in than folk think,,, it's pointless trying to hit the horizon on most beaches 🎣🎣👍👍
Hi Anthony nice that you have cod up your way…. Haven’t had one in the Bristol Channel yet! Hopefully Friday will give it a go! Just as well cod were close…. My casting is crap!😂😂 glad you enjoyed the video thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
I came to Abbotsbury last Thursday, I arrived the location (after dragon teeth) around 2pm, the low tide was 3.30pm and high was around 9.30pm so we planned to fish until after high tide. In the first hour it was unfishable when the water got near to low because my rigs kept getting buried and I lost 2 rigs, so I decided to get rid of the shock leader and used straight 70lb braid, with the strong line I managed to pull the rigs out every time it got buried. About an hour after low I started to get cod, one after another, the size was very similar to yours. Most of the cod I got was on size 2 hooks, the bait was rags tipped with squid. I was exhausted as fish after fish and didn't even have time for tea. At around 7pm I decided to pack up and had no more energy for high. It seems there are a lot of cod this year but the size is not huge. BTW, it was the first time I caught a cod, yes I was very happy.
That’s brilliant so pleased you have got your first cod!!! I hope you enjoyed your trip to Chesil! It’s very daunting fishing in a wave especially at low water and takes getting used to!! Hopefully you will be back soon! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Hi ian you ok pal , once again cheers for the watch brilliant stuff. Wow looking at them waves on chesil there crazy. We get some big ones on the humber estuary were i fish but there nothing to them. Well done on your catch again . I'm still waiting for my first autumn codling , it has just been whiting n the odd 3 bearded rockling. But the smallest whiting has been 35cm. My friend had a 42cm other day with me. Keep vids coming wen you can , all the best from GRIMSBY.
Lovely once again to hear from you mate! Rockling are the harbingers of doom in my book!😂😂 You certainly know you have been out for a day in those conditions…. Great fun! I’ve send some codling up your way they will be there Saturday apparently!! Thanks for watching as always cheers ian
I've said it before and I'll say it again you really know chesil fairplay to boy always a great watch. I'm down there fri and sat please leave some for me 😀💯👍
There are plenty left for you Leighton I assure you that!! I’m sure you will catch providing the weather behaves itself!! They weren’t very far out at all get one 50 yards and another blasted out!! Good luck mate thanks again for watching cheers ian
Great to see so many codling appearing, all along the coast. When the wind eventually goes offshore in Sussex I'm hoping to get a few. Been crashing onshore for weeks now! Hopeless for beach fishing.
Hi Kerry yes it’s very windy at the moment totally unfishable until the weekend I think but when in drops it should be cod city😂😂 we just have to hope there isn’t too much weed to ruin it!! So far it’s been a very good season on Chesil but here in the Bristol Channel they haven’t yet appeared in any numbers! Thanks for watching cheers ian
Great session Ian, but you did look quite knackered at the end. Just walking on that shingle takes it out of you and the long drive doesn’t help. Stay safe and tight lines. Mike..
Hi Mike yes took a day off to recover I can tell you!!! It’s that walk up the shingle from low tide back to the rod rest after casting/ landing fish that just finished me off!!! Shouldn’t complain though should I!!😂 great to hear from you again cheers ian
Hi again Danny lovely to hear from you. Saw a couple of Facebook posts from Kent with the odd cod on there so hopefully they will arrive soon!! Yeah we got it just right…. The weed made it unfishable as we left! Thanks for watching take care buddy cheers ian
Hi Charlie me and Chris thought we may get a biggie on that trip but it’s probably a bit early and too many small codling. I think a livebait is the way to go but mr conger likes them too!!! Thanks for watching cheers ian
Hi Ian lovely to hear from you glad you enjoyed the video! Rod is a Penn rampage surf 15’9” continental style rod it really helps with my poor casting skills!!! Reels are Penn fathom 2 casting specials. Nice reels not too many birds nests!!! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Rented a holiday let 200 yards from the shoreline, first night and chalet was rocking with the pounding surf but plenty of fishing in the week was good at W/Bexington 😅
Fantastic stuff guy's, I've been out here in Cornwall over the last few tide's and had some fantastic bass fishing. Cod can be caught here but it's hit and miss. Looking forward to the Xmas special from you already, as always best wishes Chris.
Glad you enjoyed the video! The mild weather certainly seems to have helped the fishing!!! You had the bass on lures or bait?? Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Hi Ian, another awesome watch as usual 👍 would love to see you fish a different variety of venues, do you have any other favourites dorset side? Cheers Josh
Hi Josh glad you enjoyed the video. We travel from Somerset so our local fishing is the Bristol Channel expect a post from there soon. Also going to go to Slapton in Devon for the smoothound early spring. We love Chesil so much it’s difficult not to fish there especially when the sports as good as it is currently. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Hi glad you enjoyed the video! There is very often a run of surf up the beach which you need to be aware of…. You definitely don’t want to get caught in the backwash!!! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
@@ianclarkfishing I'm just down the road in Weymouth. So very interested in Chesil. Although i mainly fish with lures and light tackle, the long casting beach fishing is also of interest to me. I'm 50 and only started this year! So I'm a little worried about pulling my back with a 14ft rod etc.
I use a long continental rod on Chesil the extra length means a standard overhead cast will get good distance without putting you in hospital with a ruptured disc!!😂😂
@@ianclarkfishing Thanks for more useful information. I shall look into a long ish continental. I got a 12ft £20, 4 to 6 oz rod. But it, and I, feel clumsy with it. Do you have any good budget option ideas? Thanks for the help, and great videos in general.
I’ve got Penn rampage surf 15’9” rods not sure if still made?? Chris has the 14’ version they are very nice!! Both easy to cast and great value for the performance you get! Cheers ian
I’ve just got home from a week at Chesil…..after watching your videos i was inspired to do the walk…..I did it 4 days to just past the teeth and caught cod, bass and bream every session. The best fishing I’ve ever had in the 9 years of coming to Dorset from Surrey…….I was hoping I would see you there but I didn’t…I even saw a Land Rover in the car park thinking it was you….but it wasn’t.
Brilliant!!! I’m so happy you had such a great time on Chesil!! Hopefully you will have many more great sessions!! It’s been fishing really well recently!! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Hi Ross I have fished in front of the Coastguard Cottages a few times at Abbotsbury but prefer the deeper water by the teeth and beyond. That said there are lots of codling about so presently I don’t think it matters!! Thanks for watching cheers ian
Hi Kevin lovely to hear from you! I’m fishing Brean on Friday we haven’t had a codling yet from there so well done indeed!! Hopefully the BC will start to produce cod up to Xmas but currently there are lots off Chesil!!! Thanks for watching cheers ian
@@ianclarkfishing Thanks Ian. The tide this Friday is quite small. Is it better to fish this type of tide ? I assume that you are closer to the deeper water.
I think generally the spring tides a bit better but it shouldn’t make a lot of difference. Best fishing definitely when tide running around high and low water. An advantage of the small tides is not having to walk up and down the shingle to cast numerous times which is a killer!! Cheers
Hi Colin we can’t keep away while it’s fishing this well… plus no cod yet in the Bristol Channel but I’m hoping that will change on Friday when we give it another shot!! Cheers ian
Fair play guys I attempted Sunday night after a two hour drive from reading fished for two hours before thought this is a bad idea … being only one there should if gave it away still always next time
Ah James what a shame!!! It was getting worse when we left Saturday evening …. The wind and weed was making it very difficult!!! Always next time!!! I find Windguru or XC weather apps good at predicting conditions! Thanks for watching cheers ian
Hi bud, the comment you made "cruising home to port" is the arsehole trawler from west bay that scours this beach up and down giving you and so many of us the very poor return you had today, but we keep on trying for the odd fish left..
Hi Nik thanks for watching Yes there’s been a trawler along Abbotsbury and Cogden this week apparently and very close to shore too!!! It’s all very sad and annoying!! Cheers Ian
You need to keep the line from being buried in the shingle when the sea is rough like it was. Otherwise you will lose all your gear from the line being snapped. Getting your rods as high as possible is paramount which is why they are on the highest point of the beach. Hope that explains the reason! Thanks for watching cheers ian
Ha ha it’s very easy to make a pulley rig.. plenty of videos on UA-cam in fact I’ve got one from a few years ago if you can find it. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Hi Charlie I’m not quite sure of your point… I certainly reserve my right to eat some of the fish I catch and return those I’m lucky to catch in excess of my modest needs. The majority of the fish i catch go back but I love eating cod, bass bream and so would rather eat those I catch and not buy from a supermarket. If you want to fish and return everything that’s up to you and I respect that as you should respect my decision too. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
@@ianclarkfishing we used to have bass around our costal area . They suffered badly in the late sixties , seventies and eighties . After 20years of virtual non existence they started to appear again . Not being fished commercially due to their small number they where left to the angler . Their repopulation is stalling again . ???
@@ianclarkfishing Due to the decrease of species the coalie and the dogfish have benefited as they are not don't have the same commercial value . Surely we should be culling these with a view to giving recovering species as great a chance as possible .
Bass stocks currently very high due to commercial restrictions I think. The amount of fish taken for the table by recreational anglers is truly insignificant compared to the commercial fishing fleet and has little effect on overall fish stocks. Plus there is currently restrictions even on recreational taking of bass at certain times of year. Anglers just need to show some restraint in periods of fish glut and i believe that the vast majority do just that! Cheers
Hi Barry it’s too unsafe to unhook fish by the waters edge with that swell and surf run up the beach. I can assure you that any fish we returned went back unharmed and all swam away fine cheers ian
well!! what a great session, now just a couple of points, as you know many anglers will watch your video and take pointers. So this was spoken about in a video before, tide running to the left, yet you walk to the left to cast, you should have been casting from the right where your mate sat, same with wind and tide together its no problem, just walk further along the beach before casting, in fact wind and tide flattens the sea. After the years of fishing you've done you should know when to ride the fish with the wave. You talk of the waves coming in and check for the big one, but you didn't seem to, no need to be near the sea when reeling in. The first cod, lets hope its the first of a few you said, then you moan when you catch more, the hours i spend over the winter months trying to catch one, the year i had 150 over the winter i was so much happier than when i only had 1and some winters, none. Then the sea state, so many people get it wrong and im sure you know there is a scale to measure it. Anyone who can read a beach can see that it was more than safe, the prior high water marks were there to see along the length of the beach, so if you had checked the weather for the day before you would have known the sea would be dropping off, so standing on top of the bank to cast and fish would be just fine. If at low water the wave was pushing to the top of the bank, i think i would have left, that would be a big swell. You would have to take care when putting back fish of course, that you could've taken home and given to friends or OAP neighbours.
Lovely to hear from you John some very valid points in your comments!!! Glad you enjoyed the video thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian

Hi Derek lovely to hear from you! It actually wasn’t as bad as I’ve seen but there is always a rogue wave waiting for the unwary angler. It’s been a better cod season than usual for which we are all grateful! Thanks for watching cheers ian
Truly a special place to fish!!! Cheers ian
Great session Ian, off to the brizzle channel at the week end so hopefully one or two oblige 😁👍
Awesome session, well done.
Very kind of you thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Great session Ian, but you did look quite knackered at the end. Just walking on that shingle takes it out of you and the long drive doesn’t help. Stay safe and tight lines. Mike..
Hi Mike yes took a day off to recover I can tell you!!! It’s that walk up the shingle from low tide back to the rod rest after casting/ landing fish that just finished me off!!! Shouldn’t complain though should I!!😂 great to hear from you again cheers ian
Well done Ian looks like you got there at the right time and day thanks for showing ps can you send some down to kent thanks Danny
Hi again Danny lovely to hear from you. Saw a couple of Facebook posts from Kent with the odd cod on there so hopefully they will arrive soon!! Yeah we got it just right…. The weed made it unfishable as we left! Thanks for watching take care buddy cheers ian
Awesome session! reminds me of the '87 season, I'm wondering if the bigger ones will turn up mid-November...
Hi Charlie me and Chris thought we may get a biggie on that trip but it’s probably a bit early and too many small codling. I think a livebait is the way to go but mr conger likes them too!!! Thanks for watching cheers ian
Great video mate , 👍, what was the rod and reel setup ? tight lines mate 🎣🐟
Yes Bexy a good spot on its day
I be prefer Abbotsbury for the slightly deeper water but Bexy better for the plaice 🎣👍
Brill session again lads 🐟🐟👏👏👍
Hi Gary so glad you enjoyed the video thanks for watching cheers ian
Hi Ian, another awesome watch as usual 👍 would love to see you fish a different variety of venues, do you have any other favourites dorset side? Cheers Josh
Hi Josh glad you enjoyed the video. We travel from Somerset so our local fishing is the Bristol Channel expect a post from there soon. Also going to go to Slapton in Devon for the smoothound early spring. We love Chesil so much it’s difficult not to fish there especially when the sports as good as it is currently. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Good session. Interesting just how far some of those waves come in. I'd been told Chesil could be a bit dangerous.
Great season of Cod this year!
Yes the best since 2016 it’s just been brilliant!!! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
Well done .
Cheers buddy much appreciate your support!!!!! Ian
Hi Ian do you ever fish right from the carpark
Hi Ross I have fished in front of the Coastguard Cottages a few times at Abbotsbury but prefer the deeper water by the teeth and beyond. That said there are lots of codling about so presently I don’t think it matters!! Thanks for watching cheers ian
Well done guys. I fished Brean instead. Not as productive as you. Had two 5 lb congers and a nice codling. Clearly, Chesil is the place to be.
Cheers
How many went back to breed
Hi Simon we kept 4 for tea the rest went back to grow bigger!!
Well you can't say you don't put the hours in everything comes to those that wait well done boys
Hi Nik thanks for watching
Yes there’s been a trawler along Abbotsbury and Cogden this week apparently and very close to shore too!!!
It’s all very sad and annoying!!
Cheers Ian
ANY DOUBTS FISH PORTLAND ROCK MARKS.
The lure of the pebbles is too strong!!😂😂👍
Why do you fish to far away from the water
You need to keep the line from being buried in the shingle when the sea is rough like it was. Otherwise you will lose all your gear from the line being snapped. Getting your rods as high as possible is paramount which is why they are on the highest point of the beach. Hope that explains the reason! Thanks for watching cheers ian
I want that rig as a gift pls
Ha ha it’s very easy to make a pulley rig.. plenty of videos on UA-cam in fact I’ve got one from a few years ago if you can find it. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment cheers ian
If we all keep knocking them on the head then we don't have the right to complain when the commercial men cull them all . Charity begins at home
Cheers
Why do you drag the fish up the beach it will harm them over all them stones
@@ianclarkfishing i like to see anyone catching cod mate, as so many people watch to learn from you, maybe a bit about the moon and tides, when are the best times and conditions to fish chesil, unless you have done it before, i learnt a new thing today from the slippy limpets vid, i do have relations in dorset, although it is over 260 miles from me
Great ideas John I will definitely add more information to future videos!! 👍 cheers ian
What is that dripping down your chin ,is it congestion,it looks terrible.
Ha ha!! No it’s a stylish bit of facial hair!! …. At least that’s what I tell Mrs C!!! 😂😂😂 cheers ian
great vid ian ,loved the quote ,[another bloody codling ] lol that does not get said very much ,its mostly a dog fish quote ,😂 ,, got me in the mood for a trip out myself now , iv been chasing perch for a while ,, keep the vids coming ATB les
Ha ha yeah quite bizarre I should say that …. Mine usually reserved for strap conger!! Glad it’s got your juices flowing for a trip!!! Good luck on the perch hunt… one of my favourite coarse fish!!! Take care Les ATB ian
