- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- Today we look at what if the Byzantine Empire still existed in America on the Third Odyssey mod for HOI4 Hearts of Iron 4. Somehow before the fall of Constantinople the Romans sailed to America and created a new empire!

the names that wern't changed are all names from the native americans
Oh yeah I remember my history teacher telling me how Tsar Nicholas II inherited the Byzantine throne based in America.. good times
And naming the divisions with greek names while having Italian generals

It's 2022 now
Gotta love how the rest of the world is the exact same
The mod is like 5 minutes old lol
Personally I just perfer mods to take longer but be really good than having dozens of Alpha and beta build mods for canceled mods. Or mods with only one or two focus trees. Except for like meme mods.
But this looks pretty good

MY HISTORY DEGREE PAID OFF FINALLY. As Alex the Rambler doth tipped his hat towards me.
That's the sad reality for anyone studying history, it doesn't really pay off in most cases...
Here where I live no one at labor market really gives a f* about historians, while in some countries like Germany, historians can find job not only in museums etc. but also in other sectors like banking. Thats because historical knowlage is valued, since it makes you look at the world and society in different way and in most cases understand it better.
Btw. am still studing... 3years in... 2 years to go... and i have no idea what will i do with my degree...
Did you create it? Massive well done if so! I did a big breakdown in my comment on this video, you might be interested in what I had to say?

@Lucas Pando You need a teaching degree as well
@@f4ll3n_derf4ll3n go to Germany, duh
Just to explain a few points for anyone interested, and Alex for future history corners! I could go more in-depth if needed, so leave questions if you want!:
f(When I refer to the Persian Empire, I'm talking about the first Persian empire, the Achaemenid dynasty, started by Cyrus, ended by Alexander the Great)
'Basileo' is an incorrect spelling of 'Basileus', the Greek word for 'King'
'Skythia' is a play on the Scythians, a blanket term for the nomadic, horsebacked tribes that frequently raided into the north of the Persian and later Alexandrian Empire. Calling them a 'horde' is a little harsh, as they had a defined and militarily successful civilization, but I understand why they did it. They were expert horseman and archers (the Scythian bow is what the compound bow used to be called, as they invented it'.
'Lakonia' was the Spartan region of Sparta
'Shahanshanstan' is 'shah' (the modern Iranian term for political leader), plus 'Anshan', which was the Persian word for their heartland, which was centred in the Zagros mountains. The city of Anshan was founded there by Cyrus the Great when he first unified his peoples. '-stan' is the generic modern term for state. Overall, it's a clever reference to Anshan, but the shah and stan are anachronistic.
'Isfahan' is a modern city in Iran, and so also anachronistic
'Barbaroi' is the classical Greek term for foreigners. It didn't have the connotations we today associate with a 'barbarian'. Integrate the Barbaroi is a cool focus because it gives you cores on all of the territories, as though the local peoples are assimilating with the Greeks.
I think the 'royal weddings in England' is a reference to the intertwining of the Greek and British royal families (e.g. prince Philip is greek)
Calling California Persepolis is very odd. Persepolis (as the polis ending suggests), was a city, not a state. It was one of the Royal cities of the Persian Empire
Calling a lot of the states ___polis is odd, as polis means city, e.g. Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Neapolis (e.g. Neapolitan Pizza, it literally means 'New City')
Ahurapolis and Mazdapolis is SUPER fun, because Ahura Mazda was the main Persian God, the creator, the god of the sun. He is still worshipped in Zoroastrianism today (the religion of Persia, the oldest religion in the world, sorry Hinduism)
'Albion' is an alternative, often poetically-used name for Great Britain
good stuff mate
Really interesting mod idea
@@pastoralpaul1002 yeah I like it alot, can't wait till Vinland gets fleshed out
-stan in Iranian languages does not necessarily mean state but more "the place of". Thus making the name of the empire seem rather odd, becoming basically place of Shahanshah. So place of the king of kings? At least I thought it said anshah instead of anshan in the middle but I might just be a bit blind. In some slavic languages stan does have the meaning of state or settlement tho
Some really interesting stuff here! My historian heart aches at california getting the polis treatment

Ohio is Ohio, the name is too godly to change
Funny thing, it has been 567 years as of this day that the Byzantine Empire was fully annexed by the Ottomans
Too soon bro.. too soon
Oof that hurts *sad Greek sounds*
Napoleon Mapping heh lol
29 May 1453 sad day
29 may 1453 best day of my life
Love the new history segment!Keep it up!Wishing you the best!
29 May 1453 Constantinople falls
29 May 2020 Alex released a video on Neo Constantinople rising!
But they didn't have the same calendar back then, so all exact dates like that are pretty meaningless, as it's difficult to convert, sorry
@@nmitchxll305 That is not how historical dating works. Saying they didn't have the same calendar back then thus the dates are meaningless (apart from all dates being meaningless) is similar to saying that Romania didn't join WW1 on August 27, 1916 because they used the Orthodox calendar.
@@edwardlongford7911 No, because that calendar can be converted into ours, especially since that day was recorded in our style of calendar at the time too. Dating back in 1453 was completely different, and trying to change them over often results in discrepancies
1:48 Thank god, long live Rambler‘s history corner

Hello, Sir Alexander the Grea- I mean Rambler
Fun new little segment!
Enjoyed the video!
Love how Alex is disappointed at Ohio and Kansas and Miami, but they’re just named after Native American tribes so it makes sense
Ah yes das imperium of Constantine
Local history major specializing in the eastern roman empire here. So what a lot of people dont know is how stupidly wealthy Constantinople was. In fact, the wealth of the city could be argued as a cause of the empire's decline, as beaurocrats were interested in sapping wealth more than protecting the empire. And the reason for this is because they controlled trade with Asia. When Constantinople fell, spain looked for an alternative way to Asia, because the ottomans closed off trade with the east. So the discovery of the new world could be easily tied to the downfall of Constantinople. In other words, had the Romans not fallen, the new world probably wouldnt have been discovered. Still a cool mod tho. A lot of fun
You know you are screwed when Luxemberg cancels its non-aggression pact...
Im actually a decendent to a famous Swedish Privateer. His name was Lars Gathenheilm also called Lasse i Gatan
It's actually potentially accurate for names like Ohio to not change, since it comes from a Seneca word, who presumably were still around
Cool to see this mod and over on hoi4. If I remember correctly myths of the legendary have been around since the days of Leif Ericsson and thorfin karlsefni. In mod canon for the past few centuries Byzantine emperors compiled all the knowledge they could get about Vinland from the varangians so when the fled Constantinople they had a decent amount of resources and navy prepared just for the voyage. They also (if you so choose) get help from a few more countries (Venice, Genoa, Portugal, etc.). On the economic side since they abandoned Constantinople they don’t really have to worry about bankrupting their country and to reinvigorate their economy in the new world they brought of they’re trade secrets (production of Byzantine silk and Greek fire) to be self sustaining.
Surprisingly fleshed out I'd say. Too you can't keep the serfs though.
But hey, conquering Britain trough the focus tree is nice.
I am personally loving the longer videos
Alex without glasses.. HAHAHAHH
The longest I ever played a HOI4 game was till 1969. I was Nationalist China and I fought the warlords, then Japan, then Japan again, then Russia, then Allies, and finally the Axis. I controlled most of the world except the USA which I accidentally turned Communist while I was at war with the Allies. This was on Waking the Tiger before Man the Guns.
I'm a fan of chonky focus trees. Looks like an interesting mod.
The rise of the Goatee a star wars trilogy.
Loved the history part! It was interesting af
*MORE BYZANTIUM MODS FOR THE GOATEE GOD!*
i really like the new history part of the videos :D keep them coming
You’ll always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
I like new historic element part
Yes, I remember. I am such an idiot. I thought the royal family was killed. I should've known that he actually fled to America and became king of the Elysian Empire and took the throne of Great Britain. Also look how they still have the George VI thingy even when you are king. DUAL MONARCHY!
I really like the history corner idea, keep it up! :)
Can u put the minute when the intro stops in order to skip and not get any spoils? thank you i think i'm not the only one who thinks like that
I believe this actually could've happened. The Varangians likely could have fled to America with the Basileus and have guided him and his people there.
Electric boogaloo omg ALEX WATCHES HERMICRAFT
Missed opportunity of retaking Konstantinople after war against italy
Dude I just started playing that qs well what a coincidence! Just a shame the mod is preeeeetty early access rn :p
If the mod is in alpha, it's a lot of work, I spent a month there to learn the coding. I just wanted to see if people are interested, so I don't get into the "void". But I hope you like it anyway despite the lack of features.
@@ezils3662 oh definitely, its a whole lot of fun, more than I expected after only one focustree essentially. If you keep it up it could very much become a grest mod, and im looking forward to how itll be once its all finished
I actually did earn my master's degree in history this year. Which is really weird to me considering my love of history all started with Rome total war.
California is incredibly valuable land. I'm shocked America's replacement hasn't stretched from coast to coast
Alex what the heck are you doing?
We said press upgrade button not *insert cancer and insult Byzantium* button! XD
There’s proof Templar’s came to America. Vikings, Romans, Phoenicians, and Chinese.

Ohio wasn't changed due to it's holy status. The Developers would've been defacing a sacred entity and would have had the might of Ohio brought down upon them if they'd changed the name.
«They may would have heard about Iceland from the danes» as a Norwegian, that offends me.
I like the history corner!
Listen Alex, even in an alt history timeline the name Ohio is flawless and should not be altered.
Signed,
A proud Ohioan
I like it when u put some fun facts in or analyze how it would be possible. I recommend Alternate History Hub if u don't know him already

The goatee is amazing
The history segment is a really good idea i think
Why was today's "Ya boi" so harsh? It was like "*It's Y A B O I* Alex the rambler". Jesus
*makes an early hairline joke*

6 Centuries in North America!? Longest video.
Dude... Goatee looking solid as hell
It’s actually based on an EU IV mod really good one too
I see someone is watching Hermitcraft: ''Roman Empire Mk2 Electric Boogaloo''
nicolas flees the soviets and becomes king of the byzantines
me: cool
When you realize the Ottomans controlled the dardanells by the end of the siege
I can't help notice that Alex looks like a 21st Century musketeer from the 15th century .... Just like the Byzantines in this mod ....
I love the little history lesson, keep it up!

Byzantine America, nice
Nice video!
Why does Nikolai II of Russia control North american Byzantine empire i didnt catch it in the lore if it even was in it
10:56 all you had to do was one branch
NICE vid👍🏻
It's a good Idea talking about history stuff continue please
As an ohioan, it is nice to see that ohio is just as boring even in an alt history setting
Love your new facial style Alex! No homo!

If only mehmd minded his darn bizz
Btw Latvia had a colonie. It was to go and Trinidad
So, Alex
Considered cosplaying as Gordon Freeman?
You should play the eu4 mods, it's a lot more thought out and a lot of fun
"Great Britain will be known as... Great Britain"
Well you are not wrong
Emancipation of the Smurfs!
Miami was named after the native people that lived in Florida so those types of names make sense.
Can you do what if the axis didn’t exist and fasciam
In a picture of a roman artist of the 3 century (if i don't go wrong) there was an ananas, or something similar, maybe it mai be only a bad draw of a fish, but we can believe that the roman empire has settled america. I'm joking on the last part😂
It’s the penguin guy from stellatris series
Hey Alex, I dont know if you will read this, but I will give it a go. I always enjoyed your videos. Especially when I subscribed to your channel in the past. I came for HOI 4 videos and enjoyed you playing all kinds of scenarios. In the past year/months you shifted a lot to becoming an 'actor' or 'youtube' star. Doing weird faces, trying to be funny in an attempt to keep people.. interested? Anyways, that's a strategy of keeping your audience engaged, but its not working for me. I'm just fed up watching this video and not even half way.
I'm here for HOI 4 content and cool gameplay videos. Not interested in waiting almost 5 mins before you start playing and then get a couple of cuts and zoom-ins on your face every minute.
I hope your strategy does work out for others. It ain't working for me anymore. =) Good luck! I really do hope you can (keep?) making a living out of UA-cam and other online content.
awsome video
I'd have to assume why some of the states aren't renamed is because of the natives living there
2:45 Sorry friend, but there is only one Internet Historian... ;)
Today in 1453 Constantinople fell to the Ottomans.
For a video for Hoi4 are you willing to play as Switzerland and restore the roman empire to its greatest extent? That or try and and play as Finland and create a nordic empire by conquering Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, Ireland, Scotland [England puppeted], east canada [west can be free or puppet], western third of the USSR, and the eastern seaboard of the USA.
