    You will never know how much this video meant to me. As someone facing health issues that involve scary outcomes, it's reassuring to know that my absolute favorite pastime since I was 4 years old will still be possible. I might not like the diagnosis, I might hate the treatment, and I might be scared to death of the aftermath, but I will survive and I will ride again. Even if it's just once, I promise you that. Thank you.

      i hope you realize that mentally gearing yourself to not allow your medical issues to stop you from doing what you love is a huge strength I know as both a stroke recovery survivor and a medical amputee currently rehabbing

    Thank you so very much for making this video. I have been a left leg BK amputee since I was 25 (back in 1984 due to getting hit broad-side while on my motorcycle and now I am 62) I spent 22 years in a wheelchair because I had a lot of graft skin applied to the ingured areas and any prosthetics they had back then would make my leg bleed profusely. I was not until I moved to Florida in 2007 was I finally able to wear a prosthetic leg but found myself unable to ride a bicycle or even adult tricycle because I could not bend my leg enough. Fast forward to today and thanks to your video I am going to try again (once I find a tricycle that I can borrow) as you have reminded me why I could not do it back in 2007 and why I have just noticed that my prosthetic leg DOES allow my leg to bend farther than my old one from back then. Thank goodness for Hanger Prosthetics. Cheers! 😎

    Thank you, lost my left leg below the knee in 2018 and your video gave me some ideas for the new mountain bike I bought since my rehab people say I can ride a bike with practice. Hope you have a good day and such.. thanks again.

    I’m so excited to find your videos I never thought about searching. I lost my leg from the knee down in a hit and run motorcycle accident and I thought that I was not able to do any of the things that I used to especially ride a motorcycle again but I’m looking forward to seeing all the different things that you do so I can transfer them to myself and make my life a little full with exercising more thank you❤

    I wear footbraces on both legs. I haven't tried riding my bike in years until recently. Its very daunting, but seeing you do it, if you can do it, I can do it. I just found your channel. I'm pretty physically. I love seeing people with physical challenges get back to living their life and being active. Thank you for making this video. I just subscribed. :)

    I have been riding bikes with a prosthetic for maybe 35 years. I can see a few problems you're having that maybe I can help with. First, you need to adjust your seat higher. You want your seat high enough so your leg is nearly straight. This means you fake leg won't reach the ground with your butt on the seat. Make sure when you stop you tip to the meat leg side. Mount the bike on your fake leg side placing your fake leg on a raised peddle so your bike starts to roll as you mount. Good luck!

  • @yoyology
    @yoyology 11 років тому

    You mentioned how deeply your knee is bending, and how that might cause difficulty with your prosthetic. In fact, it looks like your bike is not properly sized/adjusted for you. Ideally, your legs should be at full extension when the pedal is in the down position. Having your knees bend that far will cause problems in the long run for anyone, whether with one "meat leg" or two.
    Thank you for posting the video. It was great to see you getting back on the bike!

    I've had my btk prosthetic for one month and I've ridden my mountain bike twice and it was awesome. I did have trouble getting a leg over so I leaned the bike over like 45 degrees to get on and likewise to get off. I've been sitting or lying down for 6 months and my rides were exhilarating !

    What I suggest to Christine is always having your left leg as the one that you start off with. That way you can keep your meat leg on the ground and use that one for support and also allowing you of raising your seat height. Also, as Christine is a casual cyclist and not likely wanting to invest in click in shoes and pedals, if slipping off of the pedal with her left leg is an issue, she could get a toe clip for just the left pedal. Using the strap is optional.

  • @richardhill2643
    @richardhill2643 9 років тому

    I find that I get the best out of using toe-straps on the pedals or cleat-shoes. The toe-straps prevent my foot from sliding off the pedal. I use cleated shoes for racing (combined with the correct pedals), as they provide a positive lock to the pedal. For daily riding the toe-straps are best because I can use them with any shoes. Cheers!

    I became an amputee four years ago. Just yesterday I bought a bicycle and rode it, with minor problems, having not rode one in a while.
    My only problem really is having to raise the seat up a bit to accommodate this right leg.

  • @goliathprime
    @goliathprime 11 років тому +2

    WTF back to you? Dude, she's got a robot leg. Do you have any idea how cool that is? From someone who lives in snake country, who has to make noise whenever they walk through a field, do you know how amazing it would be not to worry about getting bit? And, yeah, I've thought about getting augmented. They just don't have what I want yet. Maybe in another 10 years I'll get a new arm with built-in phone/GPS. Prosthetics are amazing and I can't wait for the cybernetic revolution.

  • @mikegrok

    I saw your note about how high the leg comes up, and maybe needing a prosthetic leg adjustment.
    You should know that the crank arms (the length of metal that the pedals attach to) come in different lengths. So if the rider is shorter, or does not have as much range of motion, the bike can accommodate that.

    If you could have saved your foot do u think it would be very painful throughout recovery and u couldn't do all the things u do now without your real foot? Would u have more pain or less pain with real foot with screws and pins if u could have kept your foot. I'm facing below knee amputation and scared and can't make my mind up, I know long recovery, years, but will I wish I would have had amputation sooner instead of wasting years?

    Hi, nice vid :) Was wondering, (and I'm sorry if this is a bit skanky! ;) ) but do you get sweat issues when riding? I find myself unable to do no more than about 10-15 of decent cycling before my liner is so full of sweat it's slipping all over the place. So I have to stop, pour out, dry, wait for cool down and then get on again. It makes anything other than bimbling into town almost impossible. Any experience with this at all? cheers :)

    Thank you for sharing this. I don't know why, but it's really scary for me because, with the BK prosthesis, I don't have tiptoes on the right. I feel like I am sitting too short on the bike, but I'm afraid to rely only on the left tiptoes for getting off or stopping. Your video helped me to feel less afraid, but any tips (pun intended) would be appreciated.

    I am a lbka as well, is it best to push off with my left leg? I am having a problem since I was on my bike when the accident happened to my leg, and am wondering if there is a psychological problem preventing me for getting started again. I always did push off with my right previously, but now I'm thinking it's best to have the good foot on the ground when starting out, any ideas? I've noticed amputees seem to like getting around on a bike and I'm sure I will again, if I can get over this hurdle.

    Wouldn't it be easier to ride a 'female' bicycle? I'm not an amputee (youtube only knows how I got here) but I can't ride high - bar bicycles without feeling unsafe. But then maybe that's because I have automated a crossed leg rolling mount/dismount.
