  • I get this question so much. Can you ride a bike and how do you do it? Well I had to learn how to ride a bike again after my accident and I had to learn what works and doesn’t. But I can tell you that if you know how to ride a bike you never forget how, it’s that without a leg you learn how to adapt and you figure it out with trial and error. Make sure you have a good fitting socket and your knee is in free swing. Put your prosthetic foot on the pedal and push down with your limb to start pedaling. Then you practice, practice and practice some more. If you need help please leave me a comment.

    I’m an ABK amputee and weigh 280 pounds. I recently bought an Ancheer electric bike and I tried riding with and without my prosthetic lol obviously the without didn’t work well when gravity took control. Thanks for the video.

    I am an above knee amputee cyclist, right leg off since 1977 and have always cycled. The best thing that changed over the years is 'Dropper Seat posts'. I ride pedal bikes and e-bikes daily with my usual free swinging knees. Over the years i had many adaptions on bikes, cranks and pedals and now basically i have good flat pedals with the shoes i walk with all the time and always have a dropper post on the bike. This means anyplace i am without a bike with me i can borrow or hire one.

    I use SPD pedal and biking shoe - videos on my channel. Works great!
    A bit surprised that it works so well for you with the prosthetic to ride. I haven't bothered using one for 30 years as I think it's too much hassle when you don't have a knee. But to each their own! :)

    Excellent video. I am an above knee amputee as well. Your video answered a lot of my questions. I just have to find an area with some flat ground. I live in Tennessee and it is very hilly here, even in my neighborhood. There is a great place on the city Green belt that is mostly flat. I hope to try riding there soon. Good job demonstrating, it’s so much better to actually have someone with an amputation show what can be done. Thanks

    I wanted to say this video is great. Although I have not lost my leg completely as you did I have had problems that may be similar. I crushed my leg in an accident and have been trying to figure out how to manage and process. My leg kind of feels like an alien.This video has helped me a lot thank you for doing it. Keep riding and it’s good advice to figure out a way that is good for me

      Thank you for your comment. First I gotta apologize for not getting back to you sooner. Life can be busy. Second the biggest obstacle is to find an exercise that you enjoy and can do on a consistent basis. Mine is walking or mountain biking. They both get me outside and I enjoy the challenge. The next thing is that you gotta get your heart rate up, for at least 30 mins to be a real cardio work out. I hope this helps and if you want more details please let me know how much of you leg you can use and if you have anything that causes you pain. I can then help you with a more detailed workout. Also include your goals.

    I'm staring down the barrel of a left side above knee cut after having my right side below knee done 20 years ago. Hopefully I'll be able to ride.

    Tyler, THANK YOU so much ! I'm a left AKA and will try ... yes I tried it before and that socket was really stabbing me for the bike saddle. Will work with a narrower seat. THANK YOU again so much !

      Great recommendation of the narrow seat. I thought I would have to have a specialist fabricate it for me.

    Hello, I know this video was a while ago but I have a couple of questions about free swing mode, as I am writing a novel in which the main character is an above the knee amputee. Are you able to walk/run when the leg is in free swing mode (for example if you have had to hastily come off your bike and you don't have time to change the setting back). If you can walk/run with the leg in free swing mode does it feel any different to normal mode?

    • @Professional.amputee
      @Professional.amputee  10 місяців тому +1

      Not really able to run quickly if it’s in free swing. The reason is it would have too much heel rise and so I would be waiting for it to swing forward when running. Can you run yes, but not efficiently.

    • @Professional.amputee
      @Professional.amputee  3 роки тому

      Thanks Wether47. Mine is a microprocessor knee called the Plie3 and I wear the Soleus foot as for my socket it’s carbon fiber with a suction socket to keep it on. Most of my legs are custom made from the socket and feet for my activities.

    I'm inspired.
    Q: I have a C-Leg, but terrified of mode 2 (free swing mode). I'm afraid without any resistance in the knee, I think Ima just buckle. Is that just in my head or is that a real concern?

    • @user-hb1uo6vq3j
      @user-hb1uo6vq3j 2 роки тому +1

      Its a possibility, but when your foot is planted try and imagine keeping pressure on your heel and your leg flexed, that should keep it from bending forward in that mode. Honestly I just keep mine in walk/run mode all the time (I have an X3)

    • @dvanholt
      @dvanholt 2 роки тому

      @@user-hb1uo6vq3j Thank you Tyler. I will keep that in mind. I used to think I needed to go to some mobility clinic or something. Your video showed me all I had to do was just give it a shot. Now, I ride all the time with my kids and I wouldn't have been motivated to do it without your videos, Thanks again!

    As an AKA motorcyclist I have had occasions when regardless of weight, even when I've practiced on a bicycle, I am not able to stop from falling completely down, and not able to "catch" myself with my C-leg, trying always to stop and balance the bike on my good leg. I have always blamed it on my residual leg "shortness", but, I hate to use excuses. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @Professional.amputee
      @Professional.amputee  2 роки тому

      Well the best thing to do is to stand up completely so that the knee is straight. If your sitting on the bike then the knee is most likely bent and it will want to keep bending unless you can put it in a lock mode. Send me a picture of you on your bike or a quick video of when you have the issue.

    • @Professional.amputee
      @Professional.amputee  3 роки тому

      Your knee will work just fine. Just make sure it’s in free swing and keep you foot on the pedal by making sure their is pressure on the pedal at all times. Let me know if you need more help.
