Thanks for another great video. My name is Rivers I'm a tech UA-camr and I have to say you did a very good job explaining how phones and networks work. Thanks for the handy links too. Great series of videos and I hope I run into you at burning man.
Thanks :) I checked out your channel it's so cool! Your videos are so well shot and I love your video on the best cameras to use. Hope to catch you out there
Back in the day the best part about going out to BRC was not having access to the world via wireless. Remember taking the big green bus to Gerlach to stand in line at the pay phone (if and only if necessary) you had to make a call.
LTE= Long Term Evolution, 5G= 5th generation digital. I worked for AT&T on the 4G upgrade and got a decent history of the characteristics/focus of each generation. 1st generation focused on reducing static, second generation focused on removing the pager line by introducing text messaging, third generation focused on media input like streaming UA-cam, fourth generation focused.on providing bandwidth for HD streaming and two way video, the fifth generation is focusing on improving upload speed.
One of the best reasons to carry a phone out there is that there are apps for the burn! There are two good apps for both Android and iPhone: "Time to Burn" and "iBurn". They have the list of camps and events and a map, however the locations of camps and art is embargoed until the start of the burn. Please download these before you get out to the playa because they are quite large and you don't want to slam the network out there with lots of downloads over the cellular data networks. It's best to keep your phone in airplane mode most of the time. This will save your battery but still allow you to use the apps. Voice calls don't work well so try to avoid them. Texting works pretty well and it will send asynchronously as signal is available. It's much easier to contact people through text than via voice. Also, if you're carrying on a conversation on your phone out there, odds are you're going to be annoying the people around you. For a long time there wasn't any cellular service at the burn. Once cellular service started becoming widely available and reliable, it changed the character of Burning Man just a little. Remember, one of the Ten Principles is Immediacy. Don't let your phone put you in a trance! Let the people and the music of the playa trance you out! I'm no Luddite, I think phones have their place out there, but that place should be mostly in your pocket. Proper phone etiquette is being discreet with your use of the phone. Keeping it in your pocket should also keep it safe from getting lost. When you go to Burning Man, you should always be prepared to lose just about anything you take out there. One of the things I think Burning the Man symbolizes is impermanence. That's a great lesson to learn, just not with your phone. You'll be a little more burned than you like if you lose your phone out there. So if you do choose to take your phone out on the playa with you, remember to back it up before you leave. Another helpful thing to do with your phone, just like with your bike, is label it with your name, camp name and camp location. This will help it find it's way back to you if you get separated from it.
One of the main point of BM was to get away from your computer and cellphone. I remember when the BORG started WiFi in center camp. Worse yet when the BORG were going to start a cellphone rentals. You are pretty much telling people how to make BM more suckier.
DO NOT LET YOUR ALARM GO OFF AT 7 AM....
Sorry for caps but do not let your alarm go off, its the worst.
Haha that is the worst!

I know this is years later but in 2022 Gerlach had 5G for T mobile when I went to the 360 camp to check on my camps container.
Last year I had no trouble texting out (needed to change plane ticket), but calls were very spotty.
Nice :) Good to know!
What is the best way for a British person to get to burning. (Coz you can't drive over the ocean)
What I want to know is, I have a 77 AIR Steam TT that has an old analog antenna to up grade that would improve Wi-fi. reception.
Does Tinder work on the playa? Asking for a friend.
hahah

Burning man should sponsor an official video then people might not keep pulling out there phone they can post it on website for download.
ROFL, txt messaging is old school? ROFL. Silly girl.

Hey a small question,
when is the man burn and when the temple this year? I can't find a defined answer for that.
Thank you
Text messages are old school? I'd say calling is a lot more old school.
Americans call them phones or smartphones not cell phones :) mobile phone is almost redundant in 2018 as every phone is virtually mobile ;P
