We were on tour in USA , We got a call from our friend and Hanoi Rocks manager Richard Bishop . Hanoi was in Israel, and basically falling apart . They had a spot on LWTs 'Live In London' TV show , Richard asked us if we'd step in last minute and do the show .
So we landed from a long USA tour and went straight to Camden Palace at 9am. The owner of CP had just put in a million pounds disco lighting system , so the last thing he wanted was punks at the show breaking his lights .
So we arrived and played the show to some staff , LWT roadies and Phil Lynott . Phil was a big Subs fan .
It was the USA tour that Tezz got dropped on , so Born A Rocker has Jim playing Tezz's strat , and throwing it around the stage.
After the gig, Lynott jumped on stage , sat on my kit and did his last ever interview , with Nicky Horn (capital Radio) interviewing.
We packed up our gear , and as we were leaving , The Blow Monkeys were waiting to do their show .
So that's the story of the empty show.🤪

Had it on VHS, always wondered why there was no audience. The 10th anniversary double album live was and still is my go to Subs Live, all you need to know about Subs live on that little belter. Especially the encore with New Barbarians. Thanks Rab your a star. RIP Rab.

1983, Poland, Martial Law ... Total depression, all hopes and dreams destroyed .... I was 17 then and to say that the slogan "No future" reflected what I felt then, I don't say anything ...
And then they came, from behind the Iron Curtain, gave a few concerts in Poland ... Definitely not for the money ... It was like an adrenaline rush for the dying ... It's been almost 40 years and I still remember that concert.
This one is from London, but that one in Gdańsk was the same ...
Charlie Harper on vocals, Rab Fae Beith on drums, John Armitage on Bass and Jim Moncur on lead guitar, this was recorded in 1985 and onto dvd called 'THE UK SUBS LIVE FROM LONDON', it is a dual dvd with a cd on the other side, mine has been played to death over the years.
The origianl lineup was the best. They were rawer, tighter and more punchy. Less thrashy than what the UK Subs went on to be.
I thought this was a tribute band.
Tomorrows Girls is a blinding Version..... and StrangleHold. Left For Dead! And Rockers!!!

Used to love watching The Subs play live in The Crown, in Hailsham High Street, a small Sussex pub in the South East of England, good times
me too marc, always liked seeing them at the crown in hailsham. preferred the smaller venues where u could get closer to them. not that far away from me either.

The Subs are thee best punk band in existence...they played in Ardrossan in the Eglington hotel and killed it . The owner told them ,when they arrived, to fuck off your too early lol.. I got Charlie Harper down to 3 quid for signed tee-shirt lol.. anyways he's a diamond guy and so are the band and we all had a mental night.

If i could go back in 1985, and watch Subs in this line up...or with Ricky...This sound is pure rocknroll....and their image is cool
In my opinion this was the best band Charlie ever had after Nicky and Alvin left.

I still love the double LP green vinyl live in 85 set they recorded. Also did Huntington Beach LP.
Rab Fae Beith (Rab Fallon) was in the punk band The Wall and had his own record company RFB who released Condemned 84s first records.
Plonker Magoo (Ricky McGuire) was fae Kilbirnie. He was in Beith punk band, Chaotic Youth with some other Beith lads and they got on country fit for heroes ep and a couple of singles. Then he played for the Fits. When John from C84 left the Subs for The Exploited, Ricky replaced him. Ricky's also famous for playing in The Men they Couldn't Hang in years after his stint with the Subs.
Jim Moncur did indeed play with Combat 84. He had originally been Nicky's guitar roadie, hence close approximation of his style.
Great band at this time and they lasted thru 85 and 86.
This is Deptford John, not Plonker . and Jim Joined the Subs when Scarlet was guitarist. But I agree, he was closest to Garretts playing

In the early 90s I had a video with some of this on it. It had an awful, childish cover, Nicky Horner - whom I knew only from Channel 4's American football coverage - was on it, and it had tracks from Husker Du and several other bands (none of whom I can remember). I suppose it was some kind of compilation cash-in (I'm pretty sure I bought it after Nevermind came out, and at around the same time Channel 4 showed a similar but superior thing which had Buzzcocks and Iggy Pop, among many others, on it). I didn't even realise that the Subs were playing to an empty hall. Easy to spot now, though. #nostalgia #teenagecluelessness

They peaked around 80-81. At this point they stuck in a rut and most of the original audience had moved on. In space of a couple of years they went from selling out 3000 seaters like Lyceum and rainbow back to headlining pubs….
