This was a great comparison video. Exactly what I was looking for! I have a few other versions of the RWS but I love the borderless edition with that "vintage" look. Thank you for the helpful video!
I’ve just bought this deck, I haven’t had the centennial version before, so I didn’t know what to expect. The finish on the cards in unbelievable, it has so much texture. Even though the images have been photoshoped, I dont mind it at all. I still love it, because the empty space allows the image to breathe and the details are easier to spot! I also love your videos Lisa! It’s so lovely to see how passionate you are about tarot 😇
I was craving a new tarot deck, and just ordered this same Smith-Waite Tarot Deck Borderless right before I found your video. Seeing the cards here makes me so happy that I ordered them. Can't wait!
Very Nice, my sweet sister, Lisa! i quite like the look of this new borderless edition. i can't help but wish the backs were borderless, too...but hey...:) ...am still quite happy to see this lovely mostly borderless edition. i quite like the deeper green backs, as well...
I do like this edition a lot but like you I prefer the backs on the Commemorative. And yes, I noticed the Ten of Pentacles immediately on my borderless and ran to compare it with the Commemorative. I never noticed the signature or odd placing of the top of the archway until seeing it on the borderless. Thanks for sharing, Lisa.
This is a great deck. The original images haven't been cropped but the borderless images have been extended by US Games artist. So the Borderless images are not all Pixie's work. But this doesn't detract in my opinion.
At the risk of 'raining on the parade', I do NOT believe that this is all Pixie's original artwork. It is both photo-shopped and added to by a new artist. I have compared the artwork in the Borderless edition to (1) cards in the the advertisement in the The Occult Review announcing the release of the deck in 1910 (2) line art in the 1911 Pictorial Key to the Tarot (3) scans of both the Pam A Roses & Lilies and Pam A crackleback decks. All are bordered - none have the 'new' artwork. The only way that the 'behind the border' sections are Pixie's is if Kaplan has found her 78 original drawings. And whilst I dearly wish this were the case, it's not. Have a careful look at THE CHARIOT (5'58") - the water, banks and trees to the right side of the chariot wheel have been redrawn/altered for the Borderless. We see in DEATH (7mins) a 'new' person kneeling in the sand 1/3 way up the left side - it's is clearly a 'copy & paste' of the person on the right side of the tree. Unfortunately, the Borderless is U.S.Games releasing yet another adulterated RWS deck. I agree that it's lovely, but I am absolutely convinced that it's NOT Pixie's work alone.
Richard Gray Thank you so much, Richard, for this really valuable analysis. I'm grateful! I've got an email in to the folks at USG to see if I can get unequivocal answers here - and/but what you're saying makes huge sense. I'll record another video and take a look at those particular cards... I did have a sinking sense that I was being overly optimistic and taking USG at their word ... sigh.
Thanks Lisa for referring me back to this comment section, especially, this comment here. I am glad that my initial instinct is more likely to be correct. My own reason is that I spotted something odd on the borderless image of The Sun card that was published on USG's own website. In it, the "oh shit" line in The Sun card looks like it was stopping short a few millimeters from the edge of the card. Suggesting to me that the spaces beyond the tip of that particular line has been extended. Gosh I have no idea if I am making sense :/ EDITED TO CORRECT!
Hi Nobody Here. You are welcome to use my comments on your FB page. I notice that the text on the Borderless box cleverly IMPLIES that the edition is Pixie's work - but it stops short of explicitly stating that it's ALL hers. There's a subtle difference between "scenes created by Pixie" and "scenes drawn by Pixie". The Borderless is a great looking deck, but it's in Pixie's style rather than being Pixie's work. So for me, at least, it belongs to the same category as Edmund Zebrowski's 'Pixie's Astounding Lenormand', Massaglia's 'After Tarot' and perhaps even the Cestaro's 'Tarot of the New Vision'. I am really eager to hear USG's answer to Lisa's email.
I think it's great...... love the spaciousness and as you pointed out, that we can actually see more of the image. We wouldn't have known the earlier decks had cropped images! Love when you said, "What took them so long to do this." hahaha.
Really like this and much prefer the borderless version. Looking forward to getting a copy and can see it will be my second favourite Waite-Smith deck of all time ! Love the name of this deck too. Thanks for showing this.
Thanks for this Lisa, you asked the same question that I've been pondering for a couple of weeks. Was the original image cropped to make way for the border or have they brought in another artist to add more to the original image? I wonder?🙏🏼📿
I actually won't be getting this because I spotted in at least one card (I think it was The Sun) that what they appeared to do was digitally extending the images beyond the original borders, that entails adding lines and such, and then cropped those. I could be wrong. Other than that, I am probably in the minority in preferring the borders on this one :P This has been a pleasure to watch though Lisa so thank you for sharing!! :D PS: Why does it take so long for anyone to do this? Because USG wont let them? Harharhar :P
I don’t get why they removed a small point of mountain on the left from the fool card for the borderless version. Seeing them side by side really made it stand out to me.
Normally, most decks came with Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles. However, it is not uncommon for decks to come with their own unique sorting system. In this case, if the deck I purchase came with Air ( Swords ) as the first suit, I would take in consideration that this deck might be having more air characteristic than the others. ( This is just my own practice. )
I definitely want to get this as my first tarot deck. I think it looks so much better without the borders and has a vintage look
absolutly do not !!! its like a burger with out meat!!!!
@@abyssceral why do you say that? I can´t decide myself between borders or borderless
Thanks, you just taught me how to open a flap without creasing it or maybe tearing it somewhere.

From an artist viewpoint I think those look amazing

I've been eyeing this one. What I can't understand is if it's border less edition, why does the backs have borders? 🤢 However, I may get it anyways...

It's easy to differentiate the cards from the backs with the borders. I pick my cards by spreading them on the table and it's better with the borders.

Thank you Richard. And yes! Me too! Let me check out the exact wordings of their claims and add that to my FB page convo thread on the matter :D

I didn't think i'd care about these but I do love the borderless.
Hi I just bought it online. The Rider Waite Borderless edition. The original one too. And it's made in Chine too. I just got surprised too 😂😂😂
I think even U.S Games make them in China now. lol

I've heard this deck gets pirated a whole lot. I'm really wary of purchasing from Amazon; can anyone cite a reliable link for this product?
This is my favorite RWS, I wish to have it
I just got this deck and I love it. Curious, what are your top favorite decks?
If anyone comes here and knows About the 4 extra cards let me know. Do I add to deck or they just like Gift with purchase type of thing
My deck also came with the cups first, then pentacles, swords and wands. That's not the right order of minor arcana, right?

I wanna buy bigger decks and I just wanna know if what is the regular size of a Smith-Waite centennial deck?
