I’m not concerned about blowouts, which won’t happen as much because teams won’t have a whole month to prep, but we FINALLY have opportunities for upsets and different Final 4 teams every year! Just look at last year, imagine an Alabama knocked out Georgia to take the SEC, but they play again in the 2nd or 3rd round with UGA getting the win to face off against Michigan…unless it was a Texas team that could stop that vaunted rushing attack and knock the Wolverines out earlier…or a Florida State (they had 10 other guys on that undefeated team) and Oregon get in cause some damage to set up all new scenarios!! People hating on expanded playoffs clearly don’t get what makes March Madness, NFL and the FCS post-season so amazing!
I don't see how pointing to last year's playoffs is an argument for expansion. Last year's playoffs were the best so far. I'm skeptical that there are more opportunities for different final four teams every year with an expanded playoffs. You'll have a lot more carryover year-to-year of the teams that make the playoffs. It also makes Cinderella runs more rare since they have to beat more good teams to make it far. The FCS and NFL playoffs having larger fields works because there is more parody in those leagues. March Madness having 64 teams works in basketball because with only 5 players on the court a single player having either a good or bad night makes a huge difference. This increases the chances for an upset. In football, with over 20 starters, good teams can more easily make up for one player having an off-night and it's harder for one player having a good game to carry a worse team to victory. I'm not saying that this doesn't happen in football, because it does. It's just more rare.
For multiple years the national championship ran through the state of Florida. We have the best athletes bar none. And we used to have the best coaches. Mike Norvell has definitely stepped up to the plate and proved he is the top five coach. Sunbelt Billy and Criscobowl have yet to prove themselves within the state of Florida.
As a Gator, the deck feels even more stacked Because it’s not just the schedule but also account for this: UGA, Texas, and Ole Miss get a bye week before Florida. Kentucky gets Vandy, FSU get Charlestons Southern, TAMU get McNeese St. Miss St get Toledo. That’s means 7 of the schools will absolutely be fresh and healed before facing Florida. The extremity of this schedule begs the question of parity in scheduling in Birmingham, and the SEC should have to speak to it.
Josh, why do you dislike an expanded playoff? Every year we can tell who the big dogs(no pun intended) and it always be the 4 similar teams every year? Why not expand it for more college football and for more opportunity? We know Georgia, Ohio state, Alabama, and so on are going to be the main winners but an expanded playoff adds your favorite segment “what if”.
At the end of the day if you’re a one loss team you deserve to go to the playoffs expanding it was reasonable. I mean they left an undefeated Florida State team from the playoffs last year. Shit like that should never happen
Both Miami and Florida are down for the foreseeable future. Both UF and UM have a built in loss to the season over the next few years. FSU will have one of the best defenses in the country. I think FSU offense will be very bland. The offensive line should be a strong unit that will allow us to lean on the run game. I think the passing game will take time to blossom. With our schedule that should not be a major concern. It has improved every year during his tenure. You should know how important it is to build relationships with high school coaches around the state. Mike came in with barely any of those relationships nor his staff so yes it has taken a while to build those relationships and have those high school coaches trust our recruiters to do the right thing for their athletes. That is the way it has been in the state of Florida for decades. But his pure genius in the transfer portal has brought Florida State wins very quickly.
