  • American conductor Gerard Schwarz has led some of the world's finest orchestras for the past half-century. With 9 Emmy Awards, 14 Grammy nominations, and a catalogue of over 350 recordings, it's remarkable to consider that Gerard's illustrious journey began with a pivotal decision-leaving behind his first career as a trumpet soloist. Gerard reflects on this decision and early influences of his musical career including Szell and Bernstein, summers at Interlochen Center for the Arts, and a performance of Aida he saw at age 7. He discusses walking away from the trumpet to pursue a second career as a conductor, why he calls himself a musical traditionalist, and how the audience experience has changed over the years.
Three-time Grammy Award-winning pianist and conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin is the Music and Artistic Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestre Métropolitain, and Music Director (aka David's boss) at The Metropolitan Opera where he's just the third person to hold this position in the company's long 140-year history. In the episode-recorded backstage at Carnegie Hall-Yannick discusses the primary role of a conductor, his calm and friendly demeanor while on the podium (spoiler: he doesn't know how to be mean!), how he became inspired to conduct at age 10, and why he reclaimed his love for the piano during the pandemic. @yannicknezet-seguin1088 shares the importance of taking every opportunity to perform seriously and his deep belief that music can connect and transform anyone who listens. • Met Opera and Philadel...

Great interview with Gerry, who it has been my pleasure to play for over a (my) career for over 40 years. Great questions from Dave Krauss, looking forward to more from him.

Some of my favorite concerts in the 1980s were Gerard Schwarz's Music Today series at Merkin Hall in NYC. I remember spectacular performances of music by composers that almost no-one did then or now, or all the time in between. Birtwistle, Grainger, Druckman, Steven Albert, Leonard Rosenman, Panufnik ... Many must've been US premieres. Sometimes I'd see Babbitt or Carter in the audience. This was the early 1980s, so maybe the very beginning of Schwarz's conducting career?

The greatest trumpet solo in an orchestral piece I have ever heard was Schwarz playing the extraordinary solo at the beginning of Carter’s Symphony of Three Orchestras under Boulez.

I think Carter wrote that specifically for Schwarz, knowing what he could play.

Saw him conduct many times in Seattle. Brahms, Mahler, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky were staples of the rep. Wish we could have heard more of the American neo-classical composers live, eg, Piston, Creston, Diamond. Lots of really fine recordings with SSO though.
