definitely the coverage has improved over the years. Some really nice walls in this ... and still great fun to watch. ( I'm new to watching bouldering,... and like it so much I've started going back in time. :) )
The commentating reminded me of the MXC videos back in the day lol. I know that is not how this guy intended it to be, but when he said "thank you" after climbers failed it was pretty comical
Sean Phillips I agree that this broadcast was hilarious, but in tooootally different ways than the other replies to this post. reading the perceptions of this broadcasting is interesting, and I believe it totally comes from cultural background, and maybe some understanding of the sport. I found that the Chinese broadcaster was overly enthusiastic, being too emotional in situations that did not call for it; it was as if he was a member of the audience, not a commentator. that, and he clearly has limited knowledge of climbing. I, personally, would prefer a narrator who knows all the technical jargon of the sport and rules of the competition to comment and tell me what's happening rather than shoving the microphone into an audience member's face to listen to what I'm already expressing (although I was a second off since the video was lagging behind the audio). I thought the European commentator was on point: completely competent and enjoyable to listen to -- albeit quite frustrated with the Chinese commentator who seemed to take something he said in one situation and apply it to everyone that followed despite it not necessarily being applicable. there was a total lack of banter between the two, and many failed attempts at a casual chat... which just made the whole thing awkward. It's as if the European guy shut down because he wasn't sure how to respond to or interact with the Chinese guy, he even stopped commenting completely at times which led to long awkward silences. I actually found the "thank you"s very abrupt and almost rude. especially amongst the failures, it kind of seemed like a total dismissal of them as respectable athletes, or rubbing it in their face that they're done -- I know that wasn't the intent. the Chinese announcer also seemed very pleased with himself for knowing what "ganba[re]" means. in addition to all of this, he butchered most of the climbers' names, I understand they're hard (I can't pronounce them myself), but he also seemed to vary his own pronunciation sometimes which made it hard to follow. to me it seemed at cultural odds, while I understand all of the phrases were calqued from Chinese to English and all of the Chinese commentator's mannerisms were very Chinese, I still could not get past how out-of-place it seemed to me. it is a completely different style of commentating that I'm more used to seeing in East Asia-based talk shows than in sporting competitions. this, plus the awkwardness, plus the European dude's snippiness and snide remarks (to me, those were the funniest) made me cringe and laugh. I almost muted it to focus on the climbers, but it was too funny. I shared it with various friends just to hear their reactions / what they thought.
Sean Phillips The commentator was awesome (and hilarious)! It would be a very difficult and intimidating task to take on in a second language. "GOOD JOB"
Thanks for the re-upload. Much appreciated. However, you should set some standards and demands for the venue's you use.. If you want to attract more sponsors, live streaming is very important. So make sure you have a steady line and a minimum of upload and make sure it is tested a long time beforehand, so you are able to fix it. Also the music to me at least is a problem. Somehow you manage to get the worst possible DJ almost everytime at a World Cup. If you know anything about climber's taste of music it surely is not pop music. Thank you!
LOL, you guys are hilarious, trying to put some DEEP thoughts about the commentator, how it's related to cultural thing. The commentator was simply awful. Not because of his cultural background, but because he doesn't know shit about climbing and climbing 'culture'! It's like watching a football game commentated by someone who has never seen a game before. 'oh my god that's incredible he can kick a ball so far. his leg must be really strong......' come on guys, get serious. put someone who at least knows what bouldering is. on a side note, I have to say he got better by the end of the clip. and yes, music sucks.
People are saying the Euro commentator is rude but I think he was just going out of his mind listening to the screwed up English from the Chinese guy. It's hard enough commentating but when you have someone asking you to "explain wat the blak taype on the wolls is abowt fank you" it would melt your brain.
Climbing starts at 38:48 (starts before but the climber didn't top and something happened that meant he had to resume later)
Greg Sowa the climber didn't start properly
***** I wonder who appealed it
Thank you!!!! This upload is WAY better quality.
I kinda liked the commentator haha. Very good spirited, and even though he might not know so much, he was asking really good questions to the pro.
Thanks for updating with decent quality video!
This production quality was much better than the Vail competition; but, one thing that Vail did better was the split screen,
definitely the coverage has improved over the years. Some really nice walls in this ... and still great fun to watch. ( I'm new to watching bouldering,... and like it so much I've started going back in time. :) )
gotta love the cameraman who pops up on screen every once in a while not doing crap :D
this comp's commentating was freaking brutal....such a good sport,so bad broadcasting
+dimmo ioa harro welcome to city wok
it's simply unwatchable
The commentating reminded me of the MXC videos back in the day lol. I know that is not how this guy intended it to be, but when he said "thank you" after climbers failed it was pretty comical
thx for the quality upgrade
Its really annoying that the commentating is in front of the video so you know when they're going to fall before they fall.
split screen would be very handy to watch both contestants in the same time
Wow. Incredible!
"Wow! So many bananas!"
The broadcasting was hilarious. The Chinese commentator was really enthusiastic, but his english was a little rough.
Sean Phillips I liked the way he said thank you to every climber!
Sean Phillips The Chinese broadcaster speaks impeccable English and is so courteous. I think he thanks almost every climber when they're done!
Sean Phillips european caster was a dick

Good Canadian Boy.
Ondra's watching his fellow climbers ! He looks way calmer and nicer when he's not the one who's competing (but who can blame him)
Where is Jule Wurm? Is she injured this season?
Bonder's M2 send was AWESOME!
McColl's M3... WOW.
Ugh the commentary is god awful
Wow, Incwedebel - Loved the Chinese commentator.
I thought he was better than the other guy...even with his limited English.

the bias towards the men bouldering is incredible
That commentating though haha. Brilliant :D
I know he means well, but the Chinese commentator on this is so damn annoying!
my fave quote 'it can be dangerous to land on your head'..... really? haha
Shauna Coxsey for GrrrAte Britain
Weirdest playlist I've ever heard, let alone for a bouldering comp :-P
Daway -daway🙂🙂
Watching on mute...
The commentary and the music aren't very good Folks!
If these competitors have sex it must be insane.

this Asian commentator ruins everything good in this world
LOL

wish the dj wasn't playing such shite tunes... either that or they turned down the ambient volume.
The casters r butchering the korean guy's name so bad.. Its pronounced "Chon Jong Won" people!!!!! Whats so hard about it???
i honestly cant watch this commentary is so bad
