Are TTRPG Prep Enthusiasts Right or Are They Just bad at Improvising?

I've talked about my low prep style before but is it actually bad? Should I prep more? Are people who say low prep is bad actually just bad at working that way? What's the difference between telling my players my ideas as I come up with them versus telling them about the ideas I had before coming to the session?
