I don't think it matters how long you've been sewing for as you can always be inspired by others like yourself, I loved this edgy dress, so avant-garde, gorgeous 😍
Julian Roberts kindly sent me the pdf of his teaching notes on this a few years ago, as I wanted to learn it but he'd stopped teaching it. I made a few prototypes but never felt I'd made anything wearable. You've rekindled my interest, and your gloriously unique style might embolden my choices and decisions in the fabrics choices and cutting. Thanks, Tree: so glad I found your channel!
That's such good news. I would recommend using an A Line Skirt to start with...that will give a wearable and stunning look. Also, I have just posted a dress made by Juud, who used the raglan sleeve off download pattern for the upper half. I will ist in the community tab. Glad you e noted it. Tree
Thanks for this very clear and exciting video. I found that the size of the circle that you cut out can make a huge difference. The first time I made the circle too big and it was not so comfortable to wear. I think it takes a few tries at this to really get a feel for what will work. Thanks again for the great video.
+Denise Chevalier Hello, thanks for your comments on the subtraction video tutorial. It really does make a difference. You can use this technique on skirts too.....also, sometimes I change my dress projects into a coat....cut up the middle, add a facing and add sleeves etc. Tree x
Oh my goodness! I e only been sewing for about 18 months Tree and I find your vids SO exciting! It really makes me want to have a go and be creative, even though what I'm doing is quite basic at the moment. Thanks SO much and please keep posting!
You know it amazes me how much sewing has changed. Years ago if you showed your teacher this outfit she would make you do it over. With time things & styles improve. Have a nice week to come. H/M/D
I am so glad you have done this!!! I have written him and asked when he will be in America... I would love to take a class :) Thanks as always, your the best!!!!

Oh that's just amazing! Love that it has pockets! Clothes nowadays don't have pockets or they're very short they aren't deep pockets! So frustrating when you don't have pockets! Thank you! So inspiring! 💕🎀💕. I bet you can use knit jersey too. As well as hard stiff fabric.
+Chihuahuaization Amelie Hello, yes......I am big fan of pockets!! Always loosing things so need to keep them on me all the time. It does look good in Jersey too. Just the stage 1 is a good enough look. Thankyou. Tree X

+elaine allan Hello Elaine......Aw......what an uplifting comment, so glad you found us and so glad you find it inspiring. Go on, do have a go. You can experiment using a single duvet. Tree Xx
Hello Tree, thank you, thank you, thank you for this video!!!! Absolutely loved it. I love original clothes and have just started sewing, so your videos are showing me a lot, aswell as inspiring me. Keep up the great work you do!
Oh My God such an amazing dress and your explanation of how to do it easily makes me excited and gives me big inspiration sweetie Tree. Thank you million times to be such great and wonderful person. God bless you dear😘😘😘
i really liked this great video, im very interested in pattern making, and ive never seen patterns made like this before, thank you so much for showing us this Technique, im a fashion, student, and learning to make clothing, i found this very unique, and i will be watching, part 2 of this video, what a great video! and i have to say, i did like the black and white, dress, you made, i liked that better, than the stripes, one, as i think the black and white one really popped with contrast, but well, done nice work, thank, you. Laura
Great tutorial Tree. I'm going to try this dress, but I'd like to use some of the fabric in my stash. What is the best type of fabric should be used for this dress. Yours look like crispy fabric and will allow the folds to hold their shape and not droop.
+H.J. Chapman Depends if you want it to lopk drapey or sculptural. You could piece lots of different size big squares of fabric together 1st then make in to duvet cover bag shape. Tree X
Fabulous and inspiring. Is there a way of predicting what the finished product will do or does that come with experience? I guess I answered my own question!
Hello, it is an interesting technique and very effective. Looks good when you use an A Line skirt front and back, as a starting point. Thankyou, Tree X
Ridgley River-Jedd I think I say in video.....mine is 90cms wide by 1.5mtrs long (better to make at least 2mtrs long) so need that twice cos making a duvet cover shape. Tree x

Loved the video and the technique but when would l wear something like that? Perhaps it's a lifestyle tutorial l need! Also would have loved to see you in the finished dress as clothes always look different on the body.
+Zanderpus Ward Well....as a coat or when you apply this technique on a basic A Line skirt as a starting point. But yes. . If ciurse I kniw what you mean. Sometimes these things are about seeing processes ifferentlt and tgen going off and doing your own thing. Tree x
Hi!! Hope you might be keeping fine, as suggested by you I tried to find free pdf copy of the subtraction pattern but unfortunately wasn't able to get one... Pls if anyone can help me with free pdf

I would say start with left and right side of jacket but then it will need to join at the front for you to complete the rest of the process. Then when you do the subtraction pattern cutting and see how it falls, you will then stitch folds in place at the centre front, the cut open and make a facing.
+Bev McMullen Yes...I know what you mean. It does look good as a coat or if you use it on an A-Line skirt rather than a vest top going into a dress. Tree X
I love that you're confident enough to wear all these weird & wonderful shapes Tree, but they're just not flattering (for me) & wouldn't make me feel good about myself. As a larger lady, I need to give thought to the shapes I wear & having extra fabric with big pointy bits added to my belly, hips & bum would make me feel enormous. That said, it's good that we don't all have the same taste though, the world would be a bit beige, wouldn't it?
+Joanne Carroll Well........funny you should say that Joanne, I've just fined a day workshop with Shingo Sato doing a Moulage workshop. This is all about how to create a totally unique block by draping on the body. You get a much more tailored, fitted look which you can the modify to whatever shape you want. Oo ..and he let me film it! Tree x

It's fabric that is usually used for making ties.
it is zero waste! amazing wow

Is it possible to use this technique with long sleeves and maintaining zero waste approach?
Hmmmm......for zero waste you might want to add the sleeves on using the Circle Cut outs from Stage 2. Hope that helps or any of the left overs.
Great style if I did not use a duvet, how much fabric would I need to buy? will definitely try this style.

Hey, can you tell us which fabric works best with this technique?
Can you make a button up shirt with this technique?
You can try, will take a bit of clever placement
STITCHLESS TV how to sew your own style tutorials would I have to use the whole bodice? I see you use upper half of the bodice
I would say start with left and right side of jacket but then it will need to join at the front for you to complete the rest of the process. Then when you do the subtraction pattern cutting and see how it falls, you will then stitch folds in place at the centre front, the cut open and make a facing.
STITCHLESS TV a little confused still but thank you for the help
well Ive bought the material in two tones of kaqui Green....lets see what happens.
Luisa Machen How exciting!! Watch how I do the placement very carefully and remember you can do it with an A Line Skirt pattern too! Tree x
An interesting concept but not a very flattering dress!! You are brilliant tho' - I love watching you and love all your tutorials.
+Bev McMullen Yes...I know what you mean. It does look good as a coat or if you use it on an A-Line skirt rather than a vest top going into a dress. Tree X
I forgot: I'm a size 20, will your measurement fit me too?
Andrea R. I was going to ask the same question. And I'm 5'8". Did you tell us about adjusting for length? I am so excited to try this. Thanks Tree.
