In Japan, Citizen has a completely different image. They're not the company that releases budget eco drive watches there. They're highly respected and considered one of the best watches available. Most of Citizen's best stays in Japan for that reason.
Also remember, sometimes a product is sold without the intention of it selling. It's part of the cost of elevating a brand outside of Japan. Citizen probably doesn't care how many units they sell, that wasn't the point. They make plenty of money on their other watches.

LMAO I am a local Japanese, and I find your statement very untrue. Citizen is best known for their affordable quartz watches. They are barely known for producing mechanical watches so why would anyone spend such amount of money on Citizen instead of GS which has more heritage.

I think you've missed the point of this watch. Citizen are a quality, innovative brand to be respected. I'm sure they have an entire marketing department with more knowledge on the subject than you or I. They know what they're doing. They're showing what they can do and they're showing that they're worthy of the price point.

      Totally agree.
Also, this new movement may be made on a mass scale without the fine detailing, maybe in time for their 100th year.
It could also be this guy is looking for attention.

Totally agree. CITIZEN is doing two things here: 1) demonstrate their technical prowess; and 2) move up the luxury market like what Seiko has done with Grand Seiko. The new luxury brand is called 'The Citizen'. But you wouldn't expect youtubers to realise and think things through before they critique a brand like Citizen. Naive people normally only see one side of the coin.

    • @Oldhk-h1d
      @Oldhk-h1d 3 роки тому +8

The point you're missing is this Citizen isn't targeted at you. It's targeted at collectors that are looking for something novel to add to their collection as they may already own the major Swiss brands and even a Grand Seiko Snowflake.

  • @Oldhk-h1d
    @Oldhk-h1d 3 роки тому +25

This watch is not targeted at you. It's for collectors that already own the major Swiss brands and are looking for novelty. Citizen don't need to sell a million units of this. They just want to prove a point, which you obviously missed. You need to realize people buy more than just one watch. They either add to their collection or switch etc. Your wife's reaction isn't exactly a reliable indicator lol. Maybe you should leave that comment out lol

I don't think things works like that. you can took an example from apple and how that brands rappresents a status symbol, if any chinese products approach the market with something better at the same price it won't make any difference and most of customers won't even care. you need to do it gradually, like huawei, one plus and other brands did. Citizen is jumping from entry level watches to 7k price point, but to the eyes of rich people it's still the same brand and rich people don't care about what the watch rappresent, they care about the BRAND and what the brand rappresent, not the product. Lamborghini was a shitty car to drive, not even comfortable to sit in, but still it what the car rappresent what made it sell. At the same price why should anybody buy the citizen instead of a rolex or omega? Citizen should start from 1k with something new and good quality and only then try to rise above. IMHO

I think you do not understand what citizen is doing here. Like the caliber 0100, they do not care about the sales number. They are making a statement about their ability to manufacture mechanical watches that are on par, or likely for this purpose, surpass many expensive Swiss brands. Please try not to judge the watch just from the pictures, if you have never seen the actual thing, and I haven't.
If you have seen the cal 0100. You will be blown away by the unreal hand-crafted case and bracelet. The minimalist design, the size and thickness are so elegantly proportioned. You have to see to understand. Pictures can never do justice to this watch (cal. 0100).

@@taimao92 It is not about quality. If this were a Patek. He would say the watch is selling for half price. Patek is finally doing some charity business. lol. Please book with your watch dealer right away. It will have a 5 year waiting list, and you can easily flip it for at least double the money. The Patek name is worth US$7,000 without the watch. I didn’t know until I started scuba diving recently that Citizen is actually the ONLY supplier for all the dive computers in any brands across the world because no other company can make them with that kind of quality and accuracy. QC of citizen is second to none and saving the lives of divers all over the world. The craziest part is that Citizen never tell the world about that. Which Swiss watch/instruments maker does this? They deserve the price of this great looking watch, don’t you think?

I have to imagine that if someone handed you this watch in a debadged format. Would you even be able to tie this watch to Citizen? Remember the experiment Hyundai did when they dropped the Genesis. They took a bunch of high end car owners and gave them a debadged Genesis and had them guess the maker and cost. They were all waaaaay off. There's power in a name and branding and I feel you missed the point of Citizen's ''The Citizen'' line. It's a show of technical prowess from a heritage rich Japanese manufacturer. I feel you banging on about Zenith's heritage a bit much was almost inferring that Citizen has little to no heritage.

  • @maruataro9960

Hi everyone, I know I'm missing the point of a Citizen watch being rather expensive is said to be obserd, but I bought it and here's an update.
First of all, this design is based on the 1974 released Citizen Chrystron, so admittedly a year after the Royal Oak, the design is not a rip-off of the PRX, or any integrated bracelet design for that matter.
The caliber 0200 uses alloy metals for the hairspring, so I was a little worried for temp diviations, but this movement is regulated wonderfully well. Accuracy nerds like me may get fed up with Grand Seiko mechanical movements not even coming close to a Rolex, but this 0200 gives you the traditional 'adjust with the way you position the watch at rest' regulation. Mine runs +2 to +3 face up, -1 at 12 down or face down on room temp around 25 to 30 celsius. Citizen really knows how to regulate movements.
This regulation is assumably conservative to work in summit and winter, and they will service and re regulate for free after 2 years of purchase.
This, is why we buy Citizen's high end. Acually quite reasonable for the watch your getting!

Citizen, Seiko, Oceanus are very prestigious in japan. They don't belong to 200$ or 4000$ or 7000$ "brand space" citizen was known for making mechanical chronometers decades ago seikosha actually started as a high end brand than LATER offered cheap alternatives and people see them as the 200$ watch brand but in reality that's just their affordable option fr which they became popular outside Japan but remember!! That's only a false image outside Japan. Citizen have been making really high end stuff since the 70s The same as seiko. Take campanola as an example. They play all levels of quality and brand prestige should be a factor of the general public not to the watch afficionados like us. I still remember when everybody was talking about Grand seiko the same way you are talking about this citizen and look now.
Favoring a watch over the other because of prestige is unhealthy.
Brand prestige means nothing if the physical object is of great standards. "Your 200$ brand" is selling high end chronomasters that are arguably better than GS 9f and even more any swiss HAQ movement all day long
Seiko the 200$ brand was the one to beat the swiss over and over at the chronometer trials and the unhealthy swiss with their "prestige" decided to never play on the trials and cancel everything because they didn't want the Japanese to make them look bad and hurt their precious prestige Because the swiss without their prestige were dying from the quartz crisis.
The Japanese could easily use that for their "prestige" but guess what. They are humble and they kept quiet.
Brand prestige/ego is only perception image. Reality is not attached to brand prestige. If anything citizen has a much healthier image than any high end "prestigious/egocentrical" brand.
Booing a brand for making high end stuff is rather unhealthy. It reminds me of Archie Luxury saying "why would anyone pay 4000$ for a citizen chronomaster?"
So what, are they condemned and prohibited from offering high end physical objects?

The Japanese are very good at watches and they do what they do with a lot of love and attention and put every diving watch to serious tests in real conditions. Like their latest model of Citizen Promaster 1000m. This is a unique watch and deserves respect. Tested and tested in real conditions, not like Swiss watches in cameras test them statically. Just class a lot of money and marketing nothing more. While the Japanese do it and test it and really say how long the watch lasts, and not some fictional 4000m and 8000m resistant Swiss watches in static pressure. This is such a pressure that it will burst like a can in real conditions such a watch. Static pressure withstands most models withstand much more than what it says, but in real conditions it will not be the same. So, Citizen makes very good and high-end watches and so far I haven't heard some complain that it's rotten or stopped working. And with the mechanical there is always a problem if it is not maintained properly !. It's all a matter of taste! That's why there are different models for each type of people. But I do not agree that they are not high class and read a little about new technologies before criticizing and discussing something. Nobody makes you dig it. Success!

You have even failed to talk about the accuracy tolerance for the 0200 movement after saying “It’s A Great movement” and calling it a day.
You’ve failed to explain the finishing and times taken to create the timepiece. All you have done is taken one small component, say it’s great and then bash it without any sustainable evidence.

To understand the Citizen 0200 one has to start with examining the 0100. Citizen's back office is highly competent; the front office, the face shown to the public, is of a value-for-money watch company. Perhaps Citizen would do well to create a luxury segment, just as Toyota has developed a Lexus subsidiary, and Seiko has Credor and Grand Seiko. I strongly suspect that the watch collector who will willingly buy both the 0100 and 0200 knows watches and the demanding work that goes into a unique timepiece. This video seems aimed at viewers swayed by marketing/ brand hype and an overt show of value. I strongly suspect this site has no comprehension of Haldimann's H9. Fail.
PS Citizen 0100 variance benchmark is 1 second per year.

That's why it's worth buying It's a piece of history for Citizen.

This is a weird video that critiques a high end Citizen but starts by plugging a watch brand OWNED by Citizen (Frederique Constant).
Unfortunately this video illustrates the difference between the western and eastern mind sets. If Citizen had bought a defunct European brand and slammed its name on this watch you’d be singing its praises. Your arguments are based entirely on brand name.
The Japanese, on the other hand, are happy to wear a £50 Citizen or a £10,000 Citizen just as they’re happy to see Toyota produce cars at every price level. VW on the other hand feels the need to put different brand names on their cars at different price ranges to satisfy this peculiar western quirk.

Lexus? Brand name IS important for the most consumers, anywhere in the world. Japanese included. And any watch enthusiast who can afford and enjoys the quality of (any) 10k watch, is NOT wearing a €50 watch.

Hi, nice video, and addresses the issues many watch lovers have against this release and I do get the point. I think Citizen catches the heart of people like me that, after purchasing watches that are generally not so cheap with not just accuracy but stablility issues to sort of give up on watches entirely, and either go rolex, or AP, Vacheron etc. We know some mentioned are not the best time keepers, but are beautiful. But I think many of us are waiting for mechanical movements that out perform cheap quartz movements. Rolex, co-axial movements actually do out perform cheap quartz when properly regulated over time and in various temperature conditions. Unfortunately many people irresponsibly say mechanical can't beat quartz accuracy, mainly, from experience, they don't want to get too technical about what needs to be done to make high accuracy mechanical or quartz movements. I guess my argument towards why this 0200 would be appealing is, what mechanical movement manufacturer makes a movement to try and make it be reliable and accurate/stable to the highest level? AP, yes, but a bit too expensive for an average guy/gal. Rolex, definitely yes with warrantying -2/+2 spd. Omega, absolutely with backup of the giant group for one of the best services in the industry. Grand seiko/Credor with gret determinations for horology, and Glashutte original getting help from their owner. I personally can't feel any other name even trying to thrive for better accuracy uhan an ETA, which was great up until the early 2000 when the mentioned manufacturers ventured foward. I don't know the story behind the Zenith defy lab, but Frederique constant nows has that tech, interestingly they are a Citizen group. So I think a guy/gal coming from an AD with a current defy comparing it with this didn't know that Citizen actually has a history that could match Grand seiko, and make a movement equal if not better than a Grand seiko.
Anyways, Seiko had a long and hard time to be understood as what they are and what they will be, with the same criticism Citizen is gaining in td US and Australia. Japan and Cina seems to understand what Citizen is trying to do, and with a pricepoint similar to a Rolex OP, I feel they targeted exactly where they wanted. Let people who wants brand signature flash look somewhere else, a bring in people interested in paying for what the watch is, which Grand seiko may seem to lack recently.

Also recently bought the Bathyscaphe. The 1315 with triple barrels are amazing with actually having 6 days PR, a day more than it's rated, five, and stable to the last hour running +1 face up all through the PR. 1315 and caliber 0200, not much for investers and brand recognition, but keepers for accuracy freaks!

Pfff a tissot swissmatic anything just KILLS it.
You could go super traditional and go Favre Leuba at the citizen pricepoint.
I was expecting(the 0200) it to be around $200aud. Had heart failure when i saw 6kUS.
Id find something in Favre Leuba for that. Or a Speedmaster.
    Or. Or. Or.

There is Alba, Seiko, Grand Seiko and then there is the 30 + grand Credor. Citizens a major player can sell these and get onto the top rung of manufacturers, but this said the price of watches is manipulated in order to gull the 'nouveaux-riche' out of their money, so, we will see how it all plays out.

Just 40 mm sport watch in brushed steel and 1 sec per day: Tissot PRX....: Tissot producing Quartz with stunning design and good value for money, Citizen produces high horology with the all new 0200 movement. So everyone can find something in the price range he prefers. Nothing to complain about.

Of these comparisons only the Zenith is more or less relevant. The Tissot one is kind ridiculous, there are a lot diver watches, some have very similar look as the Submariner, and cost only 1/20, 1/30, but nobody says you should never buy a Submariner, just buy a cheap homage instead. However, I'd like people talk bad about the 0200, so the Citizen could lower the price, like to 4000 USD, so I can buy one.

  • @lordbogus6709

The same is if Rolex would have made a 500$ watch. It just doesnt fit the brand.
Citizen should have made a subsidiary company like Seiko has with Grand Seiko
The brand value is a brand value of a company who makes cheap watches. Thats the point of this video

Your mentality promotes stagnation. You are suggesting a GS better than this citizen but under your logic Seiko wouldn't been allowed to make GS in the first place. We need to promote this mayor capable brands to make high end options so we can have more options as watch collectors. That will stimulate the watch industry and push brands to innovate so WE can have better watches.

So.....a brand that makes the most accurate watch movement in the world can't make high end watches,I don't see the logica, maybe its because of the name you find a name like 'Citizen ' not a name for a expensive watch because if it is because of the name I agree with you terrible name for a high-end product.

Don't Seiko make several multi thousand dollar watches? Their spring drive abomination for example. This smacks of horologist snobbery to me. Anyone who thinks that a ghastly pink with Arabic numerals dial is the best thing for 10,000? Rupee's? Get your glasses fixed. Yes Citizen make $200 watches, some of the best you can get. Try working from a level playing field.
