Today we take a look at the history of Fucking Awesome & Hockey skateboards! We take a look at the launch of the original clothing company 'Dill' with Mike Piscitelli that spawned into FA, the clothing and partnering with Supreme New York, Dil getting sober and moving back to Cali, Anthony Van Engelen joining the brand, signing the kids Tyshawn Jones, Nakel Smith, Kevin Bradley, & Sean Pablo.

my friends and I camped outside the FA Hollywood store for the grand opening and we were the first 5 in line. Mike Piscitelli, AVE, and Dill were all so gracious with their time and were even generous enough to shoot us some free product and sign our boards. Genuinely one of the best memories I have

Some skaters just own certain tricks. When I see a front side flip, I think of Reynolds. A heel flip, I think of Lindsey Robertson, a back side 360 kick flip, I think of Chris Cole. But whenever I see a skater do an impossible in a video part, I think of Dylan... RIP

Hell yeah. RIP Dylan man. I bought his white dipped “class photo” deck before I even knew who he was. The deck just said something to me, and I grabbed it from my shop. Kept it in the shrink wrap, went home and I watched everything I could about DR. One of the most important skaters of all time. If Dylan was still alive he’d be the face of skateboarding rn. It sucks he’s not here anymore.
The embossing on FA decks I absolutely love. I don't think I've seen other board makers rip that off. Great seeing how the production quality of these videos has evolved.
It’s definitely been a signature of theirs. There’s definitely lots of brands doing embossed decks now, but no one does it as much as FA.

The embossing was a rip of the hex emboss on alien boards, no surprise considering most of f.a were riding them hex decks.

I had a brown pair of Jason Dill's, Savier shoe - yep, I'm that old and I'm one of those dudes that rock brown shoes. Always been a fan of Dill. Glad to see him make it through his dark days and have success with FA.
I've been skating for 24 years and these videos have taught me more history than anything else

Still skating my Sean Pablo class photo deck from yeaars ago. By far my most favorite board that I stopped skating a new Elijah Berle classphoto just because of the shape of that board. FA x Supreme 4 life!

Kevin Terp and I graduated HS the same year. He’s still incredible today when I get to skate with him.

I loved alien workshop growing up because of dill, and those videos were doing stuff I hadn’t seen anywhere else
They were super unique and felt so different from everything else at the time. Maybe from being based outside of California?

No one ever mentions the F.A Etnies shoe from 2008. I remember seeing some mall chain surf shop with like full size etnies fucking awesome ads across all the front windows, top to bottom. They were just black and white shots of the shoes and maybe dill with the etnies and fa logos.

The reason I changed riding from chocolate boards to hockey is the shape of the board...I need that "shovel" nose on my boards.. Only bad thing is that they are expensive af and that's not fa at all..😄

Quick little secret if you have one of the negative invert FA boards if you change your phone to invert negative you can see the color its supposed to be.

It was made by @adrianmartinus check them out on Instagram. They do amazing stuff. made a table for the Adidas store in LA, and made a recycled skateboard bowl for AVE.

I did have an Adrian martinis one. This one was by Cyco Styx/Olive Skateboards
FA is interesting for a few reasons.
At the start, only core skate shops who already had other offensive decks on the walls would stock them. Surf/skate shops were too scared of self righteous mothers to go near the brand.
Secondly, the true driver of success is quality and pop of the US produced wood ( by the legendary PS STIX ) and kids who had previously rode Chinese produced boards immediately positively noticed the difference.
The cult nature of FA and later, Palace meant hipster non skaters were coming into core shops and paying top dollar for a tshirt and helping to pay the rent, which helps skaters in general.

Another interesting fact. Dill's great grandfather is the inventor of the dill pickle.
Kinda wondering when and how Andrew Allen came into the picture at Hockey.
Ave and Jason dill were always my favorite. But FA and hockey boards snap easily. I had my first board snap in 2019 when I was really skating and I never broke a board my whole life.
They did switch factories recently to the biggest most popular factory, so I’d be curious is they still broke easily! Sometimes you just get unlucky
It could’ve been a bad press too, their boards have been mostly great I’d say 85-90% of mine have been amazing and identical in shape and skatablility

Thanks shreds, I didn't know anything about hockey skateboards except that they make incredibly overpriced Dick's which are the same quality as mini logo, but cost more than Powell Peralta flight Deck
The name hockey always bothered me growing up us skaters always hated hockey players, which is prob the irony in regards to their sense of humour it was prob just their way of giving the finger to the jocks. Who knows.
It definitely is a crazy name for a skate brand haha always wondered how they got that name.

I really like the shape of Hockey decks. They have nice huge shovel noses and steep kicks. However, FA is kind of lame, or at least the whole connection to Supreme. Supreme is like the most superficial, overly expensive, meaningless dogshit commodity. I feel hollow inside buying anything even remotely connected to Supreme.
100% agree about FA! Private art school kids FASHUN skateboard as an accessory brand...
