My Dad's family had a fight in the street with the Contehs long before John got a name for himself. His older brother was supposed to be tougher. But, my Dad's family had a great boxer in them back in the day, and sure enough sent the Contehs off with their tails between their legs. Not the classiest thing to do, I know. when you were at the sweat box gym on brasenose road - if you'd turned back on to st johns road and turned left you'd have gotten to a bridge with stone steps leading up to millers bridge. if you took another left and walked maybe 100m you would be on the corner of baliol road and oriel road with bootle town hall right in front of you. on the corner is a building known as The Incwell which I believe was a post office or police station. Anyway this specific spot is famous for being the location of the world's first crime reconstruction film.
Same all over the country if u can get to these buildings quick enough they could be repurposed as flats for the homeless etc but they get left and become so rundown it becomes cheaper to pull them down and build something new then it does to actually save them which is a crying shame because before to long all that will be left is pictures and videos of what they used to look like and in there place are the same style cheap to build blocks of flats that start falling apart 5 years after there finished if your lucky. Great job Billy on showing what the real Britain is like. I live in the East of England and we have 16 areas in the top 10% income wise and 32% in the bottom 10% some sitting side by side in the city and show's the huge disparity between the have's and the have nots although working there I always found the people with the least would offer the most to you and the affluent would barely speak to you.

I did my degree in Liverpool in the 90s lived in Allerton which was an ok place. My first ever teaching experience was in Bootle and I remember some 7 year old stabbing a dinner lady with a fork. I come from a rough place in the Welsh valleys but remember driving into Liverpool town centre through an area that looked like it had been bombed - and a rival drug gang fight were pubs were burned down and people were getting shot. Most people were great though really friendly.

My 89 year old Mother-in-Law still lives in Bootle. Every time my wife and call to visit her, it seems to have got worse. After every visit, I think It can't get any worse. But it always does. At the last election I asked her who she was going to vote for. "Labour", she said. "I always vote Labour, because they are the party of the working class". Jeez, talk about deluded! For decades, she has complained about the overall decline of Labour run Bootle. Over the last 5-10 years, her street has had a flood of third world immigrants move in. She is one, of only five white families living there now. Someone told her about the proposal to turn The Merton pub into a Mosque. She was sad because that was where she, her husband and friends used to go for drink. However, she wanted to know what a Mosque was. She had no clue what one was. All she knows now, is that she is scared to walk to the local shops because of all the scary young thugs hanging around wearing "masks". She will only venture out now once a week using a taxi to get to, and back, from Bootle New Strand. Her generation of white working class have almost all gone now. And they had no clue, during all their lives, that no political party ever really represented them. Just to be clear, before anyone makes comments accusing me of being a Tory supporter. I have never voted Tory in my life, I hate the bastards. But I hate Labour just as much. I haven't voted for anyone in many decades. I came to understand that there is just the Uniparty. The establishment always win in elections. No, I don't know what the solution to all this is. But, I know it isn't which party you vote for.

I had many a pint in there and then got the 60 bus just over the road outside the Magies to take me to sweet home Wavertree. Which has also been totally destroyed.
@robbiestephenson8497 I don't live in the UK anymore. But I made a visit back last year and I was shocked by the sense of decline everywhere. The roads seemed to be falling apart, empty shops everywhere, pubs all gone and it seemed like the council no longer bothered cutting the grass verges.

With regards to the Merton being turned into a mosque. Towards Hugh Baird College and just opposite South Park on the corner of Exeter Road, there's a new-build three-storey building called Liverpool Day Nursery with a large Arabic inscription at the very top of it.. I've never seen this "nursery" actually open; It makes one wonder. If/when the Merton is turned into a mosque, and muslim numbers rise even more in Bootle its true purpose will be revealed... Likely a fundamentalist school for muslim children.
So sad too see everything run down, when I used to live in Litherland about 25 years ago me and my cousin use too ride are bikes all the way down the canal too the bootle stand and it used to be lovely what the hell is going on here, its a shadow of its former self 😢 so sad too see the area like this.

Th drug service now is called CGL Change grow Live. It’s now known as a new office opposite the fire station in Bootle. I am under their umbrella and have been since 2018. They have been amazing for me and I have been clean for 6 years. The old office was dark and dingy though.

when you were at the sweat box gym on brasenose road - if you'd turned back on to st johns road and turned left you'd have gotten to a bridge with stone steps leading up to millers bridge. if you took another left and walked maybe 100m you would be on the corner of baliol road and oriel road with bootle town hall right in front of you. on the corner is a building known as The Incwell which I believe was a post office or police station. Anyway this specific spot is famous for being the location of the world's first crime reconstruction film.
Same all over the country if u can get to these buildings quick enough they could be repurposed as flats for the homeless etc but they get left and become so rundown it becomes cheaper to pull them down and build something new then it does to actually save them which is a crying shame because before to long all that will be left is pictures and videos of what they used to look like and in there place are the same style cheap to build blocks of flats that start falling apart 5 years after there finished if your lucky. Great job Billy on showing what the real Britain is like.
I live in the East of England and we have 16 areas in the top 10% income wise and 32% in the bottom 10% some sitting side by side in the city and show's the huge disparity between the have's and the have nots although working there I always found the people with the least would offer the most to you and the affluent would barely speak to you.

I did my degree in Liverpool in the 90s lived in Allerton which was an ok place. My first ever teaching experience was in Bootle and I remember some 7 year old stabbing a dinner lady with a fork. I come from a rough place in the Welsh valleys but remember driving into Liverpool town centre through an area that looked like it had been bombed - and a rival drug gang fight were pubs were burned down and people were getting shot. Most people were great though really friendly.

My 89 year old Mother-in-Law still lives in Bootle.
Every time my wife and call to visit her, it seems to have got worse.
After every visit, I think It can't get any worse.
But it always does.
At the last election I asked her who she was going to vote for.
"Labour", she said.
"I always vote Labour, because they are the party of the working class".
Jeez, talk about deluded!
For decades, she has complained about the overall decline of Labour run Bootle.
Over the last 5-10 years, her street has had a flood of third world immigrants move in.
She is one, of only five white families living there now.
Someone told her about the proposal to turn The Merton pub into a Mosque.
She was sad because that was where she, her husband and friends used to go for drink.
However, she wanted to know what a Mosque was.
She had no clue what one was.
All she knows now, is that she is scared to walk to the local shops because of all the scary young thugs hanging around wearing "masks".
She will only venture out now once a week using a taxi to get to, and back, from Bootle New Strand.
Her generation of white working class have almost all gone now.
And they had no clue, during all their lives, that no political party ever really represented them.
Just to be clear, before anyone makes comments accusing me of being a Tory supporter.
I have never voted Tory in my life, I hate the bastards.
But I hate Labour just as much.
I haven't voted for anyone in many decades.
I came to understand that there is just the Uniparty.
The establishment always win in elections.

I was brought up in bootle bIll and we moved away to woodville when I was a teen. So sad to see the places that made my childhood memories in such a state. Love the place but something should be done by the council, they are a disgrace.

I can't believe the state of the Merton, it was literally a Bootle landmark back in it's day.
I had many a pint in there and then got the 60 bus just over the road outside the Magies to take me to sweet home Wavertree. Which has also been totally destroyed.

@robbiestephenson8497 I don't live in the UK anymore. But I made a visit back last year and I was shocked by the sense of decline everywhere. The roads seemed to be falling apart, empty shops everywhere, pubs all gone and it seemed like the council no longer bothered cutting the grass verges.
@@MelissasArttook them 14 months to cut the grass and brambles and whatever else nr where I live, and it's a nice area normally.

With regards to the Merton being turned into a mosque. Towards Hugh Baird College and just opposite South Park on the corner of Exeter Road, there's a new-build three-storey building called Liverpool Day Nursery with a large Arabic inscription at the very top of it.. I've never seen this "nursery" actually open; It makes one wonder.
If/when the Merton is turned into a mosque, and muslim numbers rise even more in Bootle its true purpose will be revealed... Likely a fundamentalist school for muslim children.

Merton was open even last Xmas. 10 people in there. on it's lazzies then.. Shakey in Kirkdale had a boxing gym upstairs, another good pub back in day.

Th drug service now is called CGL Change grow Live. It’s now known as a new office opposite the fire station in Bootle. I am under their umbrella and have been since 2018. They have been amazing for me and I have been clean for 6 years. The old office was dark and dingy though.
