How to Replace a Dometic 300/310/320 Leaking Toilet Flush Ball Seal (gasket) in a Couple of Minutes

  • If your Dometic Toilet bowl is not holding water here's a quick video on how to remove, inspect, lubricate, and reinstall it. If it shows signs of damage and does not allow water to hold in the bowl you can simply lubricate and replace it. I hope this video is helpful.
IMPORTANT - USE SILICONE GREASE ONLY - Vaseline or other petroleum products should never be used on rubber or neoprene objects. It can deteriorate the rubber or neoprene very rapidly. The correct lube to use is a silicone based lubricant, which comes with or without Teflon
Last year I replaced our plastic Dometic Toilet with a Dometic 310 Ceramic Toilet (Boy what an improvement it is from the plastic toilet). In the video I mentioned that I replaced it a few months ago, I guess time flew by quicker than I thought because I replaced it a year ago :) Here's a link to that video to watch - • How to Install a 310 D...
Anyway the toilet water started leaking by the flush ball seal so no fresh water would stay in the bowl. In the video you will see me replace the seal and inspect the old seal for damage and show you a couple things that could have been the problem.
One of the tricks is to make sure you lubricate the seal well with Plumbers Silicone Grease and make sure all the surfaces are really clean before installing the seal.
Note: Products I used and links to them are provided below.

We have a brand new Dometic like yours in our horse trailer that's been leaking since day one. Took it back to the dealership and they calmed to have fixed it, they didn't, and it still leaked.

You're welcome Rick, the toilets are pretty basic and easy to work on. Just make sure all the surfaces are clean and make sure you lubricate the seal with Silicone Grease (Do not use Vaseline, it is a petroleum product and will deteriorate the seal pretty quickly). Nice video, Michael! I've replaced the gasket in our 320 when it stopped holding water after about a year. Used the inexpensive generic gaskets, and it took two attempts to get it to hold water, but it finally did. Think I'll go with the Dometic next time - and follow your example of regularly maintaining the silicone grease. Thanks for the video - it really is an easy job.

We replaced our toilet several years ago with this great unit. It flushes SO much better than the stock one that came with our trailer. But, due to the hard water situation we have here in NV, and the really bad water we get when down in Quartzsite AZ, coupled with the crappy water we had down in Houston, TX where we were stuck for eight months (for medical treatment), the toilet started leaking. It would NOT hold water. I bought this seal and planned on a simple replacement project. Well, following the instructions that came with it (the official Dometic seal), I just could not get it in place. The directions say to add the silicone/Vasaline AFTER you have the seal in place. Naturally I came to the college of UA-cam for advice. You showed applying the 'grease' before installing the seal, which makes perfect sense. C'mon Dometic, step up your instructions! Anyway, the seal practically slid into place with very little effort. Thank you so much, Michael. You da man . . . ! Oh, and the Dometic seals are really spendy but I figured they would fit better, and I bought locally. I'd rather support a local business than mega-giant Amazon even though they are cheaper.
Incidentally, while on our stay in Houston we bought a portable water softener (like many of the other residents of the RV park we stayed in) and fell in love with it. I'm hoping with the elimination of the calcium deposits this softener promises, we won't have to replace this seal for eons now. I also expect to see no more white calcium deposits on all our water fixtures. We liked our soft water experience down there SO MUCH, we just had a water softener installed in our house two days ago.

    Hi Mike-
    I just learned that the “ball “ pivots at 2 points: “3” & “9” o’clock.
Occasionally one pivot connection will get knocked out... resulting in water loss like you experienced.
With the ball in the closed position, check to see if it is centered. Yours appeared to show more black seal on the left. Typically this indicates the ball has become “unhooked” on the side with the greatest amount of black rubber seal showing: in your case the “9” o’clock position.
The ball can be snapped/clicked back into place easily while holding the ball fully open. Reach thru opening and pop it back. (Most common reason it comes loose is bumping it with a tank rinse tool that was passed thru the toilet to “rinse” the black tank or similar tool/accessory). Hi
Always use NON-PETROLIUM lubricant on rubber seals.
Great video... liked your technique on “new” seal install.

I struggled to fix this for awhile, got a new (very expensive) Dometic seal, this didn't work. Problem was, when I was using a snake to clear a clog (this didn't work either, I was a novice and didn't understand the need for lots of water in the tank) and dislodged the ball valve arm from its left hand socket. This wasn't obvious until I actually reached down in there and felt around. It was easy, just popped into a round hole.

If that's a rubber seal, I wouldn't use Vaseline. Petroleum products cause rubber to swell, which could perpetuate a leak. Stick with the silicone and save the headaches. You can also get silicone grease at a home improvement or hardware store. You might compare prices to make sure Dometic isn't jacking the price as an "RV specific" product.

    • @thetraveltrailerguy
      @thetraveltrailerguy  Рік тому +1

Thanks for watching and your question Brooke. Yes it is important to apply silicone grease on the seal as I did in the video. What it does is keep the seal lubricated so it does not dry out, this helps the rubber stay pliable to maintain a good seal so water will stay in the toilet bowl. If the seal is not maintained with silicone grease it will dry out and its possible sewer gasses may sneak by it in smell up your RV.
Also its important to remove the seal from time to time to clean the area the seal comes in contact with, inspect the seal for damage, and reapply more silicone grease.
