    +Indy Neidell, about 41:00 and the funding of Greek Armed Forces: After the 1897 defeat in the Greco-Turkish war, the need to a general reform of the armed forces became apparent. So, a considerable part of the budget was especially focused for rearment. _But a large part of the funds came from donations_: The King and the subsequent Greek governments asked every Greek businessman, trader, entrepreneur etc, mostly those of the Greek diaspora, to give whatever they could. And they did. The pinnacle of those donations was _George Averoff_, a businessman of Alexandria, who donated in his will 8 million golden drachmas specifically for bying a cruiser. With those funds the Greek government bought, in 1909, a modified _Pisa-class armored cruiser_ built in Italy, which was named _"Cruiser Georgios Averof"_, The cruiser gave the Greek Navy naval superiority in Aegean during the Balkan Wars, and remained, until WW2, the Greek flagship.

    Numbers for the Greek Mannlicher-Schönauer:
    -The first contract was signed with "Österrechishe Waffenfabrik Gessellschaft, Steyr" on 11/11/1905 (10/29/1905 O.S.) for 79 gold Francs each (~$1,800 current value), and the first batch of 60,000 rifles arrived in 1907.
    -In 1912 shortly before the First Balkan War the Hellenic Army had received 137,454 rifles and carbines and 100 mil rounds.
    -In 1914 shortly before the First World War, Greece receives further 52,615 rifles and carbines.
    -In 1925 Greece signs a contract with the Italian Company "Societa Industria Ernesto Breda" for 100,000 rifles, that arrive in 1927 with the new designation M1903/14/27.
    -In 1930 Greece signs a contract with "Steyr Werke AG" for 30,000 Μ1903/14/30 carbines.
    So, in 1940 just before Mussolini's Italy invaded, Greece fielded (according to some sources) 320,000 Mannlicher-Schönauer M1903, M1903/14, M1903/14/27, M1903/14/30 (others lower the number to ~230,000).

      Also to add, by 1916 Greece was self-reliant in small calibre production. "The Greek Powder and Cartridge Company-PYR.KAL" had been active since 1900 when the three Maltsiniotes bros obtained the machinery and equipment to produce smokeless powder and manufacture brass rifle cartridges & projectiles from Germany and Belgium, and founded the company. In 1908 PYR.KAL was bought by the Greek state who left the management to the three brothers, and by the end of 1918 Greece was self-reliant in heavy artillery ammunition as well.

    Just a quick note here. The most iconic weapon in greek military history is the Mannlicher-Schoenauer, not the Fusil Gras. People consider this weapon the "guide" that brought the greek soldier to battle. Especially since the victories in the balkan wars. People ended up calling it " Ένδοξο Μάνλιχερ" which literally translates to "Glorious Mannlicher".

    Two points:
    -Greek riflemen carried between 120 and 150 cartridges for their Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles (based on different sources from different eras).
    -The Greek Army received a substantial amount of Lebel and Berthier rifles from France, as well as Chauchats, VB rifle-grenade launchers etc, that were still in use in WW2. The Venizelist army of 1916-1917 (of corps' strength: three divisions) was entirely French-equipped.

    • @apmoy70
      @apmoy70 7 років тому +9

      The Lebel and the Gras (in smaller numbers) were the standard rifles of the Greek base regiments (more like reinforced battalions) in the Battle of Crete

    • @xristar
      @xristar 7 років тому +5

      Still, the Lebel actually soldiered on into WW2 as the grenade-launching (VB grenades) rifle. The rest like the Gras or the numerous captured Turkish Mausers were passed into second-line service.

    Interesting to note that Greece continued procuring military equipment from Austria and Steyr particularly after WW2. Most visible are the nearly 500 Leonidas armored personnel carriers, originally built under license by Steyr Hellas in Thessaloniki, later renamed ELVO and further developed locally. The Greek army currently also uses hundreds of Steyr 12M18 trucks, also built under license by ELVO. This is actually the base truck for the US Army "Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles" (FMTV), of which tens of thousands have been built.

    To answer the question about shipping weapons to Romania during the war, there were four Romanian ships caught outside Romania by the onset of hostilities - one belonging to the state owned company "Serviciul Maritim Roman" (Romanian Maritime Service - SMR) and three belonging to a private firm, "Societatea Nationala de Navigarie Maritima "Romania" (The "Romania" National Maritime Navigation Society - SR). These ships were used to carry weaponry and essential supplies from Britain and France via the Arctic Route to the Russian port of Arkhangelsk, from where they would be taken to Romania by train.
    Of these ships, the 6500t "Bistrita" belonging to SR would be intercepted by S.M. U-43 on 19.10.1916 and sunk near Syltefjord, Norway, without loss of life.

      British weapons have already get more attention than the other various guns of other countries for years. One of the biggest problems about people learning ww1 they tend to be stuck in the cultural sphere they are in and don't try to move out of it much (the Anglo-sphere). What makes C&Rsenal different from the other gun informers is that they don't follow the mindset of typical educational programming on TV or documentaries have now a days. Their organization or group is more focused on education than it does ratings or trying to find something most people would like. Sure if they would like getting a bunch of money or seeing their ratings blow up but their organization isn't created in a way that I think would allow them to profit like the History Channel or NatGeo does. Because of this they will conduct research, test, and etc. with items most people would not even have interest in, just so that this devise at least has one educator speaking about it so that one day another person who needs to know this info gets the information he needs. This is extremely beneficial because it sometimes shows and put into the question of the various old stereotypes, rumors, and myths people had with guns for a long time (including other nations' guns)had for centuries, or perhaps just shatters them all together. You ultimately get exposed to strange unheard of guns that either make you cringe at the thought of it existing or fall in love with the with their appearance and history. To me that's a lot better than watching another American's gun or Britain's gun special which we already have. I think it is better them to just conduct the thing they already have right now. This is coming from American that enjoys watching stuff about guns.

Othias, as always, first class effort, even with a shanghaied camera crew, and iron framed spanish revolvers waiting to shatter into fatal shrapnel from exposure to sunlight, lol! i actually did notice there was a bit less "big O", volumetrically speaking, congrats. aside from the technical glitches live streaming from opposite sides of the ocean can produce, you both do a great job of blending respective minutiae to give a very thorough overview. i couldn't ask for a better combo to do the job at hand!

    On the selection of the weapons by the Greek army: While I am not denying the reasons that you are hinting for the selection (and being far from an expert on the issue) please also note that the Greek Army Staff at the time was excellent, with a lot of officers who had studied in the military academy of Berlin in key positions.

    From my looks at Mountain troops during WW2, one could say that Rifles and Pistols were of equal utility. You either were shooting from behind rocks or among open thick-trunked trees within 25 meters or shooting at 400+ meters. Finding angles to hit someone between 25 and 400 meters was much trickier than normal.

    I hope you can do a portugal special because i have some questions about the Portuguese gear during the war, for example from what I could dig up the Portuguese used British weapons during the war, due to the standard rifle of the Portuguese Army being a Mauser-Vergueiro, a shorter version of the Mauser 98. Funny story the Portuguese used to be really short 100 years ago, so they end up buying a shorter version of a gun.

    Actually , Greeks last in Second Balkan War because of their bayonets , they were the best in close quarters battle with their bayonets . My grand-grandfather told to my father that : "when he stabbed Bulgarians with his bayonet in Thessaloniki , he had to step on them and pull out his bayonet from their guts, stomach etc, it was very useful weapon" . Also , Greek army doesn't have that plenty of ammo and money to buy them, so they had to do something to be effective , they trained in close quarters battle with that weapon . Greeks used it against Italians in Greco-Italian war at 1940-41 and of course it was very effective . Btw , that's why we still learning bayonet charge (εφ' όπλου λόγχη/fix bayonets) or fighting with bayonets in Greek army , because no money or plenty of ammo . :)

    • @monicam48
      @monicam48 7 років тому

      History Guy uh no....Most soldiers preferred to use their bayonets detached from their rifles. Almost all close quarter fighting would have been done in the trenches, where a full length rifle and bayonet would be virtually useless. In WWII close quarter fighting was virtually non existing due to new tactics employed by all nations. These new tactical doctrines where based on mobility using squads based around rapid fire and fast mobile redeploying. hand to hand would occur in such rare instances that soldiers on all fronts would rarely even attach bayonets. If a country had little ammo and relied on bayonets then they would be destroyed. It's common sense in order to use a bayonet one has to get close, in WW2 that's not easy when you figure most powers fielded a automatic weapon for fire support on a squad level, be it Germany and their MP40, Britain and their Sten, USA and their BAR and Thompson, Australia and their Owen, etc. Anyway if your squad was lucky enough to get close enough to use the Bayonet you would likely find that your alone or perhaps one more to take on the other squad.

    Hey Indy! Could you comment more about the role played by Spain in the war, please? As far as I'm concerned, it is quite interesting the special neutrality that the country played as the the king Alfonso XIII was openly pro central powers, and punctually helped Germany, and meanwhile there was a great number of voluntaries that joined France, specially from Catalonia. Furthermore, the most widely used aviation motor used by the Entente was the Hispano-Suiza 8, made by an Spanish manufacturer (a company that was really devoted to the same king). All in all, it would be great to learn more, specially from this contradictions. Congrats to the team of "The Great War" for this amazing show!

    • @rogergarcia4349
      @rogergarcia4349 7 років тому

      Btw, I'll bet that the way those Spanish weapons made it to Romania was thanks to Juan March. A famous trafficker, who supplied to the Germans , e.g. fuel for their submarines in Mallorca, and who had to work also for the English and French. If you investigate further in this way, I guess you will find the connection.

    Enjoyed this joint video immensely. About ammo. With Dynimit Nobel being Swedish and therefore Neutral how does their interests in ammo production at DWM and RWS play out. German powder formula to propel 7.92 x 57 198 gr. sS. @ 2,572 fps. is something they would hold dear. How much WW1 powder technology was shared intentionally or not? Keep up the great work. The weapon was chosen instead of the Greek-designed "Philippidis gun"
    ('Οπλον Φιλιππίδου), itself based on an earlier model of the same
    Austrian manufacturer, after intense lobbying against the Greek design
    in 1905. This caused a serious political crisis, with accusations about
    "national treason" heard in the Greek Parliament.[1] The Philippidis gun was officially approved for a 1925 order, but, again, the Mannlicher-Schönauer was produced (by Breda in Italy), due to (reportedly) late submission of the Greek designs to the Italian manufacturer and/or cost factors.[1][2]
    An improvement of the Mannlicher-Schönauer was designed by Lieutenant Rigas Rigopoulos during World War II
    (spring 1941), incorporating both modified and totally redesigned parts
    to dramatically increase firing performance. Though approved by the Greek military to be produced in Volos, the improvement never went into production, due to Greece's invasion by the Germans.[2][3]
