Track 1 Lead vocal was Brian with Mike Love, 2 was Brian, 3 was Mike with Brian, 4 & 5 were Brian, 6 Instrumental and 7 was Brian & Mike. Side 2: Track 1 was Carl Wilson with Brian & Bruce Johnston, 2 was Mike with Al Jardine & Brian, 3 was Mike, 4 was Brian, 5 Instrumental and 6 was Brian ( and released on single as a Brian solo song). Also, Sloop John B was never intended for this album but the company didn't think any of the other songs had hit record potential.

wtf when i was a huge metallica fan a few years ago i listened to you hear all those for the first time (admittedly i'm barely a fan anymore) but now that i'm a few years deep in being a major beach boys fan, and having it pretty much become a key part of my personal life now i see you doing this! crazy
edit: can't wait to hear you possibly listen to surfs up or friends! also watch love and mercy. its the only good beach boys biopic and it has a lot of really cool recreated scenes of brian creating this album!
also good vibrations was released on smiley smile after almost being on the unreleased smile album which i feel on both records it would have belonged far more than the more grounded nature of pet sounds.

Since we recorded this, I actually picked up Smiley Smile at a thrift store. It's great too!

Freinds definitely seems like a companion piece to pet. Like Pet without the Crew. Vocals much better on Pet obviously.

Pet Sounds released in 1966, Led Zeppelin IV, which has Stairway to Heaven on it, released in 1971

Every song on Pet Sounds has arraignments that sounds like it's creator was insane at the time. That's why i love it. It's a weird album. Who would use a bass-harmonica? It's on this album.

Most of the Beach Boys get a lead on this album, particularly Brian, but also Mike Love, Carl Wilson and Al Jardine have various leads. A 4-track tape machine (and 8 track) was used with a bunch of bouncing. Brian Wilson's original mix was in mono (Stereo wasn't necessarily the default in 1966 and Brian did have difficulty mixing stereo due to partial The basic tracks were recorded (almost exclusively) with sessions musicians (The Wrecking Crew) and using the old Wall of Sound production with everyone in the room, instrumental overdubs did occur, a lot were straight in the desk (Sloop John B is a prominent one). Leads were double tracked with backing harmonies done in the room with various variations of the 6 Beach Boys singing.
There is an excellent bio pic called Love and Mercy that chronicles two eras of Brian Wilson, Paul Dano really pulls off the Brian Wilson part.
The Beatles were roughly halfway through Revolver sessions when this was released, soon to be official Beach Boy Bruce Johnston flew to the UK to do promo work and played the album to John and Paul at a party. I think the Beatles had not done a track longer than 3:18 at this point and that was on their last album Rubber Soul.
Technically the "Electro Theremin" on I Just Wasn't Made For These Times is a synth (though a basic one) but it was the first of 3 tracks that used the instrument (the 2nd being Good Vibrations).

RE: Good Vibrations, it was started during these sessions but put aside to finish Pet Sounds (it was recorded on 100 + hours of tape after Pet Sounds was released). It was slated to be on the great unreleased album Smile and did end up on it's replacement Smiley Smile in 1967.

On Bass you will find there is 2 basses going at almost each point of the album, a String(double/upright) Bass and then either Fender P Bass or Dano Bass VI .

"Caroline No" was an interesting case, it was actually the lead single from the album, but it was released specificially under the name Brian Wilson as opposed to a The Beach Boys single, which might've accounted for its lack of exposure outside the album. It's interesting as to why they did that because he never had another real solo release for over 20 years after that.

Brian Wilson sings the falsetto parts on Sloop John B. Bruce Johnson has a very interesting tenor voice that helped their sound, most notably at the end of God Only Knows. Johnston famously first appeared in studio for California Girls. And also wrote and sang lead on Disney Girls 1957.

Regarding recording overdubs, Sometimes I’ll double a vocal and not sing the consonants. No lining up necessary from that point. Almost like I’m singing just vowel sounds

A lot of record players were mono even in the 70s.

Mike Love sang the bass parts. And he also had an almost 2nd voice as the nasally lead voice for California Girls, Surfin USA, Surfin Safari, you get the idea.

That's Not Me has Mike Love on lead vocals. God Only Knows has Carl Wilson on lead.

The western sounding guitar on the right in 25:23 I’m pretty sure is not a guitar but a special kind of bass made by Fender, the wiki page is here as I can’t explain the instrument very well en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Bass_VI

I’m also quite sure that “plucky bass” that you were referring to is the Bass Vi upon watching more of the video

I feel like Pet Sounds would lose some of its ethereal dreamy quality without the fade-outs imo

How about being quiet and just listening without yapping over the music every two seconds. The 'Audio" engineer did not hear Pet Sounds for the first time cause he wouldn't shut up.

A sound engineer who's never heard Pet Sounds, the most iconic album of all time next to Sgt. Pepper....in the words of the immortal Casey Kasem: "ponderous, fuckin ponderous."

Not everyone shares the same opinion of it. I find Pet Sounds pretty close to unlistenable. As bland and lackluster as listening to Taylor Swift.
