Thad Jones, Mel Lewis "Suite For Pops" - A Good Time Was Had By All

“A Good Time Was Had By All”, opens with a distinctive Latin beat, Roland and Mel are joined by Jerry’s soprano over the band. Thad’s Flügelhorn romp gets it on as the party-goers momentarily mess up the rhythm just like street people do on the street. George Mraz is heard more than vamping. Frank Foster’s lengthy tenor solo is superb. The rhythm aspects have the flow and the solos are taken by those that are pointed out. Jon’s octave-higher “Hello Dolly” quote was suggested by Thad but the high Ab was his own. The band riffs while Jon takes an Armstrong coda into the stratosphere. A perfect ending to this suite for Pops.
