  • “Farewell” is the concluding segment of the original “Suite”. It is joyful and bouncy thing that lends itself to handclapping. In the reeds, led by Jerry Dodgion’s soprano, and some harmony work by Thad and Cecil Bridgewater, lay the theme out as Janice Robinson echoes same before she “gutses” her way through her solo. She handles the plunger, tearing a funeral recession to pieces, for that’s what “Farewell” signifies, the returning of the mourners from the gravesite. Roland Hanna takes two choruses while Len Gibbs’ congas add needed bounce. Gibbs and Mel provide a Hollywood crescendo as the trumpets take it out with Faddis on top.
