The character starts out driving in the gloomy big city in a luxurious car searching for something authentic, but only finding beautiful hotels and gorgeous women who are all materialistic, superficial, feeding into the consumer yuppie lifestyle. All of which no longer interest him. He finally finds sunlight and most importantly enlightenment by exploring the rural open desert road, also letting go of money and stress by burning his car. Walking until the night comes down on him.
So my take away; He meets a girl, they click, they enjoy a night together at a fancy hotel, and she's gone in the morning before he wakes up. She left him a note saying that "Overnight I saw the bluest skies" but "You don't want me around" ie she had an amazing night, but she doesn't feel they belong together, either because she feels she can't offer what he wants (which seems to be a longterm relationship) or that she's dealing with her own stuff. The note also says stuff like "Out of luck, I rewind to the time I was young and wild" so when she's down she revisits memories like the one she made with him to keep herself going. He realizes, even though he didn't want it to end the way it did, he'll never be able to make it work with her (or he realizes he'll never find her) so he gives it up and leaves town. I think burning the Audi (which she probably rode along in, with him) was a way of him letting go and moving on, and now that he's torched it and left the city, he's free and his life is now an open road of possibility
