    Back in the day I camped at the top in March with three other people. The summit was packed with snow and we made a snow cave. That evening the winds were gusting at 45+ mph. Great fun, beautiful sunrise.

    For the last few weekends, I've kept on putting off another Baldy hike. The last time I went was back in 2018 and I started at the Manker parking lot, up to the notch, and over the Devil's backbone ridgeline. The Ski Hut Trail looks like a nice alternative. It's shorter, but looks steeper.

    My mom use to do the race to the top of Mt Baldy in the 90s. Not sure if they still do it, but it kicked her butt each year lol.

    I would add a note of caution for rattlesnakes especially around the ski hut area. During the day they will linger below the fallen trees in the area. Lots of people will sit on the logs to snack or lunch and surprised when a rattlesnake emerges. Generally they are not aggressive. Sit on the logs with caution.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  2 роки тому +2

      Good tip and yea, overall look out for rattlesnakes under logs and debris. Oddly, I've seen one on every hike last week (in ANF). Sometimes I go for months without seeing any.

    Julian Sands is lost somewhere in this area. Maybe Hellcat? That canyon area? It's crazy how things can get out of hand. Hope he's okay.

    Just went up this trail a few days ago with a colleague of mine during a stay in Ontario…really enjoyed it (5th time for me) and came down the shallower trail via the notch…not the strongest hiker, but very manageable.

    Thanks for this video. I’ve hike this route many times about 20 years ago. Looks like the signage is much better than back then. The Bear Creek tail is also a great hike. Sometimes I would exit via the Devils Backbone and take the notch road back. I wonder how popular this trail is now? Back then one would leave the crowd at the falls. Much better than the Ice House trail.

    • @maxoblivion
      @maxoblivion 2 роки тому +1

      The Ice House trail is my favorite in the Baldy area. In spring after a winter with a lot of snow and rain, I love that first mile of walking along the creek with the sight and sound of rushing water amongst the trees. Sure, this trail has nice views and it's a better workout but I'll always prefer the Ice House. Of course you'd better watch out for the rattlers. I've seen more than a few on the trail or buzzing somewhere in the rocks along the trail. Oh my!

    • @rufusmacck3712
      @rufusmacck3712 2 роки тому +1

      @@maxoblivion I liked the Ice House trail too. Especially going on to Ontario or Cucamonga Peak or taking the Chapman trail to Cedar Glen campground for a return trip. I wonder if the solar toilet is still there. I just meant that the Ice House trail always had a lot of people on it back then.

    • @maxoblivion
      @maxoblivion 2 роки тому +1

      @@rufusmacck3712 True. The Ice House trail is more accessible and can be relatively crowded. I've had the luxury of being able to hike there on weekdays and in early spring and late fall when sometimes there's been just one or two vehicles at the trailhead. Of course it's always possible to get unlucky and go on a day when there's a tour bus parked there with a load of Korean tourists on the trail. But even then, it's a long trail so it won't seem very busy.

  • @CrewMotleyCrue345
    @CrewMotleyCrue345 2 роки тому +1

    There’s wild rattlesnakes by that but specially where the logs are at

  • @XJarhead360
    @XJarhead360 2 роки тому +1

    Great review as always. I hadn't done the ski hut trail since the '80s and glad to see the posts which weren't there at that time. It was tricky to find the trail from the dirt road before the sign was put up. Glad to see those logs by the falls to keep most people back. The rescue teams have rescued many idiots over the years who went to the falls and couldn't come back.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  2 роки тому

      Yea, those poles and signs are a godsend. I think they went up a few years ago, but I def remember hiking without them as well. People would sometimes drift down into Goode Canyon and then get into trouble.

    Your old "Mt Baldy Hike" guide said no parking pass was required-- has this now changed then?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  2 роки тому

      Thanks for pointing that out, there's conflicting info and no clear answer. I called the office 3 days in a row and got a 2-1 win in favor of no passes needed. Update the guide accordingly. Thank you again 👍

    I thought the Devil's Backbone is more dangerous?? I'm conflicted which route to take. I wanted to hike around spring or summer time

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  Рік тому +2

      Wait until summer and take the traditional route up through the notch and backbone - it's really not dangerous if not icy or snowy
