  • When doing a van build or conversion for van life, camping or boondocking there are many details to consider. Finishing the van build or tiny home to a standard you are happy with is so important. We spend hours on our conversion doing things that no one will see when the van is complete. Pulling 12 volt wiring, DC-DC charge controllers and cables. Renogy charge controllers, Coleman solar panels and Battleborn lithium ion or even AGM batteries. Who see those ? The hours we spend on the DIY kitchen cabinet design, deciding where the dometic fridge will go. Will we have a Maxair fan or a fantastic fan or maybe both. Yes we flush hours designing our van build. Making sure that every part of the build gives us as much as possible in terms of function while keeping the weight down.Too often we spend all that time preparing and then rush to finish. Maybe because of time, maybe because of money. But for whatever reason, too many van builders hurry to finish their builds and sacrifice the final appearance for the sake of haste. Don’t do that on your build. Take the time on your van conversion to finish the inside you are happy and proud of the results and you’ll get many great years and days camping, overlanding and have a great van life.

@@VanOfAction Actually, I bought a 2021 3500 extended with the thought of building it out. It's been in the shop for a total of 2 out of the 10 months I've owned it now for an electrical issue. Long story short the blind spot detection keeps shutting itself off without being prompted. Have you possibly heard of this before and if so have you heard of anyone fixing it?
      Thanks again for the vids...

@VanDaddy-O - so sorry to hear that. I can't imagine how frustrating that would be. My 2018 does not have that feature so I don't know anything about it. BUT !!!!! are you aware of the Promaster Forum ? A wealth of knowledge from owners all over the world who are building or dreaming - I'm sure you'll find something or someone there ... let me know how you make out. Here's a link
      - you have to make an introductory post before you can ask a question www.promasterforum.com/

@@VanOfAction thanks VoA. Yes, I'm aware of the forum and the 2 threads of others having the exact same issue. Glad to say the 5th time in the shop 🙄 was the charm and it is finally fixed (I believe)... all related to an ungrounded wire or so I'm told. I'm trying to give it a couple of weeks to be absolutely sure things are working right before I post on the forum to hopefully help others.

I have watched a TON of how to videos and have been getting sooo confused. My mind has a very hard time grasping things but i must say your simple clear method has worked for my mind and how it can sort out and process complecated things. You have taken what seemed like a bowl full of spagetti and made it into a simple clear cut method. Im working on my ford e250 with alot of help from my man. Hes talented at doing things with his hands ( fixing machinery, woodworking, etc) but sometimes his method of showing me how gets him frustrated because i can't pick it up easily and he has to show me multiple times. So im trying to do lots by myself but i get stressed because i dont know how. Thsnk you for making a great video on how simple it can be!! As my man always says, dont overthink it.

Hi @ BushcraftNFun - thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. At the end of the day, if you take it one step at a time most things are pretty simple ......... good luck and share some photos !!! .... Dave

I know of two builders that have all of the tools like you mentioned. Both of these two builders talk and talk and don't say anything besides ( Oh look how good I am ) Keep up the good work 👍I enjoy all of your video's

Hi Thomas, thanks for watching and commenting. There is question that a van conversion takes a lot of thinking if you are looking for a high end finish. Be sure to stop back…….. Dave

Wow! Your videos are so informative and helpful! I really appreciate the “no fluff” and lots of details. I spent all day yesterday messing with almost the exact window area to no avail. Now I think I can do it! Please keep doing what your doing. Wish I had found you sooner in my build!

@@VanOfAction well I gave up on the side pieces. I built a closet too close to the window and it looked weird so I just covered the sides in fabric. It matches a few panels in the van. Can’t figure out how to post a photo...Thanks for the encou9!

Wow... that looks great! I'm actually toying with the idea of using some kind of flex carpeting (if I can find good quality) and just molding that to most of the van walls/structure points... I will be using cedar for the ceiling as well as other areas where a solid contact point/furnishing is neccesary. I'm leaning towards having just a couple smaller slider style windows for ventilation and visuals but without any framing...how sturdy is the vans' exoskeleton without the inner wooden framing... is the framing of the window itself enough for structure integrity and safety. Will be totally binj-watching your channel.

Good day Jess, thanks for watching commenting. There are sooooo many ways to finish the inside of a van !!! I have a video on doing the cedar ceiling you may find helpful ua-cam.com/video/3Zuwfj4ZsnQ/v-deo.html - Regarding the windows, the ones I used have a frame on the inside and the outside. They squeeze the van body and hold themselves in place. The seem really solid. - I have a video about those too.
The other type of window glues to the outside of the van. This type looks more "factory installed" and more elegant for sure. But I didn't trust myself - or my used van to be able to stick it on well enough that it would stay. Be well.

All that calculating to save 1 to 1.5 inches is???? I would MUCH prefer gain that space to create a beautiful, wide windowsill where you could grow herbs or plants.

Hi L - thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I think the greatest thing about a van build is that you can do it whatever way you want and there are no two the same. If what I did helps someone find what they want because they don't want what I did = I think that's a win ! I hope you'll stop back ..... Dave
