How to Add Vinyl wall ceiling panels Van build design promaster sprinter transit van conversion camp
Adding vinyl to your van conversion or van build can make all the difference in the world. Marine vinyl (sometimes call Heavy Marine Vinyl) can add such a wonderful dimension to your build and raise the quality of the finished product. Vinyl makes things look professional and adds texture and colour that would otherwise not be available. Vinyl wall panels are easy to keep clean, if installed over foam can be a soft place to rest your body and create a van that is fun to show off. When marine vinyl is added to the ceiling it opens so many colour and texture choices suddenly the van designer can create a more open and airy feeling. While marine vinyl has almost limitless possibilities there is really only one way to install it. And that method is proving to have some issues when applied in van conversions. Sprayed on Contact cement is really the only glue that will work (www.lepage.ca/en/lepage-products/specialty-products/spray-adhesive/multipurpose-spray-adhesive.html or www.dap.com/products-projects/product-categories/adhesives/contact-cement/weldwood-contact-cem/) are 2 products that one may choose.
There are several important things to consider when planning on installing marine vinyl wall or ceiling panels in your van. One is the material you will b gluing the vinyl to. For best results use a clean dry plywood. A clean dry hard surface is the best possible place to glue vinyl. And while it would create a beautiful panel it would be hard and possibly uncomfortable. For that reason, for many adding a layer of foam between the plywood panel and the vinyl is the way to go. Using foam (rochfordsupply.com/collections/cushioncraft-upholstery-foam) will add texture and comfort to your van build. But then you are relying on the foam to hold the vinyl in place. This can be a challenge because all contact cement is activated by heat. When coupled with the potentially high temps of the van interior it’s possible for the glue to become soft and release the heavy marine vinyl from the wall and ceiling panels and create a saggy appearance.

    I wish people would actually show step by step on how to build the mounts for the inverters instead of just showing the last step and then attaching the inverter. Some people don’t have a clue how to build the area to put the inverter and batteries. 😢😢

      Hi Chatmann43 - that's a GREAT comment - thanks so much for watching and taking the time to post it. This is a first for me - Most of the time I get comments telling me I give too much detail and tell too long a story !!!!!! I guess it was just so obvious to me I didn't think to mention it. What I did - was build the side wall panel the of the basement out of 1/2 plywood. I made sure it was totally secured to the steel channels of the van with bolts and jack nuts - just like the wood I placed on the ceiling before the cedar. You can see it here .... ua-cam.com/video/qQSS7zd6QvI/v-deo.htmlsi=ycY4YFprpe8VpHpy Once that piece of plywood was secured it became the thing EVERTHING is screwed to. The MPPT controller, the fuse panel, all the wires and the inverter. Because my inverter was mounted so high up the plywood. The equipment you use will determine where and how each will be mounted. There may be a need to build out something with a couple strips of wood, but it should really be pretty straight forward. I hope that helps. And I hope you'll stop back and join the community ....... You should have fuse mounted to positive terminal of battery. Then cable connected to fuse instead of battery.

    • @VanOfAction
      @VanOfAction 5 днів тому

      Hi Bill, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment - I appreciate what you're saying - and in fact the cable that is connected to the positive terminal runs through a fuse before the power goes anywhere else. I can't imagine how that fuse being connected directly to the battery or down cable a foot or so really changes anything in the protection. BUT - I'm a carpenter and just doing things the way that makes sense to me .......... if you can elaborate on the concept it would be appreciated. Hope you'll stop back and join the community. it's in the conversation that we all learn..... Be well .... Dave

      @@VanOfAction Murphy's law. Chaffing of insulation by something either metallic and eclectically active -- or allows it. Overheating due to something nearby or a chemical/age/drying deteriation or age. Also, people frequently don't account for voltage drop along the cable, which can cause some loads to draw excess current. Say if there is brownout (voltage drops way down) caused by drawing near max current that is sufficient to cause motor winding insulation to melt shorting out. The extra Current squared times resistance along the cable causes heating that melts the insulation off. Your fuse blows, protecting everything after it. But between the battery and the fuse the insulation may be melted off and 12 VDC. Besides, search for Joinfworld MRBF Terminal Fuse Block 100A 58V DC Battery Terminal Fuse Kit with 5/16" Stud Marine Battery Fuse and Waterproof Cap for Boat Truck RV Construction Vehicles on amazon and not really expensive. $15. Blown fuse. Just replace the fuse part. $10

    I know you made this video 2 years ago. But I bet you were glad when it was over! Your right with a lot of the stuff you say. But the Renogy will only feed power to the battery when it has fully charged the car / van battery first. When / if you connect solar in series. They act as one solar panel. This means that say a small piece of shade or a tree / shadow etc. covers about +/- 20% (or even less) of just one of the panels. You will get +/- 20% drop in solar input (not good) from all 3 panels. Even if the other two panels are in the sun. Because they are connected as one. If you connect in parallel. Each panel works independently. Meaning that if one panel has the same +/- 20% of shade on it has above. Only that panel is affected and will give less input power. While the other panels will continue to give full input power. Not sure why you wanted / needed the box. They do MC4 connecters to wire all 3 of them together the way your drawing showed even for parallel connections (all 3 + cables from your solar panels into one MC4 connecter and one + out. And the same for the -) and feed those 2 cables into your van and then connect just one + and one - to your MPPT or power station.

    • @VanOfAction
      @VanOfAction 5 днів тому

      Hi Sunseeker, thanks for watching and leaving such a detailed comment. While I accept that you're probably right about the power loss differences in the series vs parallel configuration it was really never a consideration for me. The point I was trying to drive home in the video was the way series or parallel create AMPS and VOLTAGES and how important it is the installer be sure the generated power is compatible with whatever MPPT controller they are matching it to. In my case, connecting in series would have cooked the controller in minutes (I've spoken with someone who did exactly that)......... I don't know, but I'm sure there are instances where a higher voltage preferred for the controller , in which case the power loss would simply be something you had to live with. I needed the combiner box because pulling the cables from the roof to the area where the MPPT controller was going to be was one of the first things I did. At that time I had no idea what any of the equipment was going to be, but I wanted the wire in ................... I explained it starting at 2:51 of this video ua-cam.com/video/EORXMSVL1oY/v-deo.htmlsi=May3cPtvwLI4r2Li ..... With just the cables pulled I had limited options out in the mountains .. also, this was COVID and I was trying to buy as much locally as I possibly could. Hope you'll stop back and join the community ........... Be well Dave

      @VanOfAction 2 місяці тому

      Hi @IVolutionI - thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Honestly that's exactly what I thought when I bought the van. Not that I had any choice at the time - this was the only van I could find available in Ontario Canada that week and we were moving to BC. Taking out the bench is not problem, and fooling the computer is easy too. The challenge is finding a single seat to put in. The Dodge corporation won't sell a new single seat for a van that has a bench because of the air bag computer. Finding a salvaged one with an intact airbag is almost impossible (totally impossible at the time). And one out of wreck that had it's airbag deployed and seat belt tensioner released was way too involved to try and make right. I have been keeping my eyes open ever since and if a single came available I'd be all over it !!!! Hope you'll join the community and stop back ............ Dave

    I've watched this once through initially & then later when I was ready to build, I skipped around trying to find the size of drill bit for the holes that slide over the factory pins. Can you please add it to your main comment below the video? I picked up some scrap 2 x 1" aluminum C-channel today at a local recycler, more than enough for the brackets. I think I'll go back & get the other pieces I saw. $3 got me a 56" length! Thanks.

      @VanOfAction 3 місяці тому

      Hi Zarguy .... I LOVE that !!! $3.00 !!!!! Man that makes me smile. I'm sorry about the drill size missing. Unfortunatey my van is 3400 miles away at the moment and my shop is all packed up for moving this weekend .... (video comes out tomorrow) .... What I did initially because it's impossible to measure was ..... I machined a piece of wood 3/4" x 1/8" x 3" - then using my chop saw I just cut a groove part way through at about the middle. I just kept increasing the groove until it fit as I wanted it to. Be sure sure to post some photos of how you're doing. These clips have been copied all over the world and one day I want to do a compilation video ..... be well ....... Dave

    This is what I’ve been looking for. I only have a circular saw and straight edge and was trying to figure out how to build my door without renting a router and table saw and now I feel like I can do without. Thank you!

      @VanOfAction 3 місяці тому

      Hi Ashton. You are welcome and I’m glad you found it useful. I too didn’t have a ton of tools. But it would hard to build the doors without a table saw ….. ua-cam.com/video/3WSMSySXrU0/v-deo.htmlsi=az5mXRbnDn08IPTD. However the cost can be very minimal. If you look for auctions and estate sales near you you’ll be surprised at how cheap things can be. Here is what I used in my shop. ua-cam.com/video/latceInzQug/v-deo.htmlsi=QHNVto_i6UsP4-hk good luck.

    In my view, wool is nowhere near as good an insulation method as closed celll foam, which acts as not only an excellent heat/cold insulator and noise insulator, but also eliminates the need for the stick-on sound deadening material, and acts as a very effective moisture barrier (moisture comes from INSIDE the van - our breath and cooking vapors and showers are primary moisture contributors here), and it stiffens and strengthens the entire van structure. Messy and expensive and care need to be taken about access to wires/plumbing etc as necessary, YES, but so worth it in the end result!

    • @VanOfAction
      @VanOfAction 3 місяці тому

      Hi Barry. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Insulation and moisture are probably the most debated components in van building. I am really happy with the wool I used and can’t imagine anything being better. But I understand not everyone will agree and it’s in that conversation others will learn. Be well and stop back. Dave.

  • @ClarkyMalarky
    @ClarkyMalarky 3 місяці тому

    If no one has mentioned: the two wires are 4 gauge, double them up you get double the amperage( about 175 amp). You want the highest amperage from your batteries to inverter. Especially if your running things like microwave’s and AC.

    • @VanOfAction

      Hi Dan - here is the reply I posted in your other comment - not sure which you'll see first - thanks for coming by and I hope you'll join the community ..... Hi Dan - thanks for watching and taking the time to ask. I used the 2" material for 2 reasons. First- it's what they had in the scrap bin. Second - it was recommended to me by someone who has had roof racks before that the rack should be at least an inch off the roof to prevent whistling as you go down the road. The Promaster roof isn't flat, there is a crown in the center and with 1.5" stock I think you would be getting pretty close to the metal. Now I don't know if it would whistle or not - but I know mine does not...... Hope you'll join the community .... and stop back .. Dave

    Just a question for you! Is it possible to take a door apart to remove the inner panel to install glass once it’s been glued together?

    • @VanOfAction
      @VanOfAction 4 місяці тому

      Hi barbara... thanks for watching and taking the time to ask. With a lot of care and a little luck it may be possible to take the doors apart and reassemble them. I did that for the panel in front of the cooler because I wanted to change the height. But the reality is it would be a tremendous pain and probably not successful for every door. Hope you'll stop back and join the community ..... Dave

    Thanks for the video! I just installed the same inverter in my trailer. In your video at about 8:50, you hoist the inverter up to its mounting position, come in with the socket and drill to fix the upper mounting bolts, and then you fail to get a connection with the socket to the bolt. The picture fades out, and I hear you say, huh...! That was EXACTLY my experience. They designed the mounting holes too far under the inverter housing to get a straight shot with even a screwdriver, much less a socket and wrench. I ended up using Phillips screws and a screwdriver angled in to secure the inverter in position. Really poor design. I had to contact Renogy with a question, and the reply came back as a mixture of English as a second language and cut-and-paste technical text. I never did get a coherent response.

      Hey Solar Steve - thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. You're right, now I realize I should have mentioned how clumsy mounting the unit to the wall was. I too used some Robertson screws with washers. It's really sad how many builders have had just terrible experiences with Renogy customer service (shouldn't even call it that). You think they would hear about it ......... Be well, I hope you stop back ... Dave
