+Valerie Atkinson Yes I wanna know too cuz my situation is so similar. I tried going off the pill before but experienced all of those effects and my doctors just advised me to go back on the pill. If waiting it out does work, then I might consider stopping completely too

+Valerie Atkinson As an update, most of my post-symptoms have gone now. However, my sense of smell didn't ever come back completely even until now - I can smell overtones but not the rich flavors of foods (difficult to explain) as compared to my previously very sensitive sense of smell from before the pill. Acne problems continued for a few years after coming off the pill (with good sleep, less stress and a good diet, it can be lessened but I constantly had a breakout or two all the time even until now - skincare products have helped though). Overall I still don't advise any women to go on the pill for long periods of time as a personal opinion! Love you guys!

+meejmuse Hi Jen, thank you for this video. This was really informative for me as I will be getting married soon once I graduate and move to Korea. Thank you for the update and thank you for a perspective from a Christian perspective. I have another question, if you don't mind answering between sisters. Are you currently using other forms of contraceptives or have you decided to not use any? Thanks for mentioning this in your last video, I feel it was brought up during a time I needed this info. Thanks for always being your beautiful and true self! :)

What I meant by "not natural" is the part where we are controlling our body's cycle. Like I said numerous times, I'm speaking to you as a friend/sister here - giving my own experience but still giving everyone their own space to make their own decisions. I respect you guys and only made this video out of care, not to "influence". Hope I clarified that x

My reason for taking the pill was because my period was irregular and i got heavy, cystic acne. My dermatologist said that i had a hormone imbalance, i had to take antibiotics for my mountain-like acne that hurt and stayed for a year. Since i started taking the pill, my period is regular and i didn't have any big acne spots anymore. :)
Still, thanks for your story! :)

@@dnt.kybella i stopped taking the pills for 6months now and i can say, yes, your acne comes back. but if you change your diet and eat low carb, 1 month BEFORE you stop taking the pills, i noticed that it's not that bad. if you continue eat low carb, the acne you get is small, on occasion 1 bigger pimple, but it goes away fast. i hope my skin will balance out after 1 year.

Im glad you decided to share your experience. I don't think the pill is all bad, its just that every individual has to make sure the positives outweigh the negatives. FOR THE INDIVIDUAL. I remember going to forums regarding contraceptive methods and reading things that scared me, but I also heard from women with no long term effects. But at the end of the day do what's best for you.

    • @veryangrypigeon
      @veryangrypigeon 8 років тому +1

Thanks for saying that. I regret reading those news about rare cases of women who suffered fatal blood clots from pills and other anti-pill articles. They scared me off the pills and years later I found out I had endometriosis all along only after it nearly destroyed me. Now I have hope again because I received surgery and I'm starting to find hormonal treatments that work for me. The articles never tell you what age, weight etc. the women with fatal issues were too. Did they smoke etc? You never know the full story. There is a risk of deep vein thrombosis and certain cancers with the pills but like you said, as an individual I would not have a life worth living either way so I take this risk. Studies say being pregnant is even more of a risk than being on the pill. Smoking and being a certain age(hormones change with age) as well as having migraines all factor into what contraceptives one should be using.

Meejmuse-san, thank you for posting vlogs like this. Do not ever think that every thing is good and right to do, just because the people in western world are doing it. People in the west think differently than people in the east. Question everything no matter what people in the west accept or do. Take more credence from your family. Western stuff does not always = good. I live this everyday, sometimes I wish I was in Japan. Love you babe, always, your husband is lucky to have you in his life.

Thank you so much for opening up like this to us and genuinely educate/advise us on such a "controversial" thing. I never thought about the pill past controlling my period. It's highly irregular beyond me just having a 35wk cycle, but now I feel as if seeing a doctor and not making it a first option seems like a good idea. I really appreciate this heart to heart, 18 minutes flew by because it was insightful Unnie.

hi Jen, it me Mel. I just wanna say thank you for sharing all of these with us. I've got married early this yr and this video really broadens my knowledge on contraceptives via pills. I didn't know the side effects could be that serious. Thank god the people ard me discourage the consumption of excessive pills/medication so I'm rather skeptical about them too. I hope your body will slowly go back to normal. love you Jen!

I took Yaz a couple of years ago because my dermatologist recommended it to me for my acne. After taking it for a year, I started getting urinary tract infections, so I stopped. I was on Yas first and my body didn't like it. I had a reaction right away and stopped within a month of starting it. I was switched to a low does generic for Ortho-Tricyclen now for years and it's been good for me. I think my acne got better and my weight wasn't effected by the pill. But my periods are regular now and my flow is not heavy, of which it was the total opposite before. Now, the pill is also regulating a fibroid for me. The pill is amazing for all it does.
My situation was different and my hormones were all over the place. I have an Asian mom that was against the pill also and didn't understand why I wanted to take it. But once I kept spotting and having periods for long amounts of time and then have long stretches of no periods, she became more accepting plus all the homeopathic/traditional remedies weren't doing a thing for me. A few years later she brought it up again and asked whether I really needed it. I stopped for a like 3 months just to see how I would fair and my periods were irregular again. Worse, my fibroid began to increase in size. Needless to say, I went straight back to the pill. My mom preferred it rather than risk possible future surgery on an enlarged fibroid located on my cervix.
I definitely support a woman's choice for her body, but I would also like to point out that these hormonal contraceptives aren't just a choice sometimes. For people like me or others with severe issues like endometriosis or people with horrible PMS symptoms (vomiting, severe cramping, migraines, etc.), the pill does more than just regulate periods. It's a chance at improved quality of life. I don't think many people realize this when they talk about hormonal contraception. To me it's a luxury to be able to talk about it like it's just a choice.

I have experienced acne problem (3 years) and am experiencing hair loss (almost 3 years) problem for some reason. Mine are much worse than yours actually. I did not understand why God allowed that happened to me, but now I think God has His pace. Since He knows how much hair we have, what I can do is to trust Him and have stronger faith in Him. While being on contraceptive pills my skin cleared up and my period was really nice and I didn't gain weight.
HOWEVER, I got extremely depressed and anxious. I would cry every day and sleep a lot. It was the wort time of my life. I quit taking the pills and my depression went away after 3-4 months, thankfully.

I'm just alone at home and bored, that's why I answered quickly xDDD
So my skin was a bit problematic and then I started taking the pill and it completely cleared out. Then I stopped taking the pill and my skin did break out but it was just a bit, after a week it returned to normal and it was pretty clear.
The pill generally regulated my hormones, so even after stopping taking it my period was good and I didn't have acne. My only problem was the depression side effect.

which would cause your hair not to go through the 'dead stage". that is why pregnant women often get thicker fuller hair. once they give birth the hair follicle goes to the 'dead stage'' contributing to postpartum hair loss (11 months later i am finally growing hair back, but still losing a ton~) i don't know if or how that would help... but take good care of yourself!! you will be a great mommy one day! xoxo

For anyone reading this: do your research, talk to your gyn, discuss worries you have with them, and share your past experiences of contraceptive methods. When I went off the pill I got full blown acne. My chest “leaked” fluid onto my shirt. I had a big circle of wetness over my nipple & didn’t even know it until later. My hair started breaking off like crazy. My GYN said, “The pill helps your hair, now that you’re off of it your hair is going back to the way it was b4”. I thought, “No, my hair was NOT like this b4”. Some doctors paint an image that it’s a miracle pill & most people are completely fine with it so U have nothing to worry about.

To lighten the mood of this serious video, I like to share a piece of comedy related and makes sense:
One day a man was seeking the best method of contraception from a wise man. This wise man presented a piece of paper with a lot of letters and folding lines printed. The wise man mentioned if he folded the paper correctly as indicated the man will find his answer.
The man hurried home and after carefully folding the paper it revealed "No F**k"

you are totally right, pills work differently for everyone:
personally my own body didn't work with yaz, which is a new gen pill, and expensive, like yasmin
but yet the older generation and cheaper pill, levlen has worked wonders with me
everyone is different, so everyone make sure you find the right one for you!

I experienced the same thing! I'm so glad I came across this video, but wish I did earlier. I started taking the Brenda (another version of the pill, also mainly for acne) in 2011 for period pain. It worked well and I was getting flawless skin.
I decided to stop taking the pill last year and see whether my body can cope since I've been on it for so long & in Chinese culture we also don't like taking medication unless it's absolutely necessary. I started getting breakouts everywhere (even on my back, bottom, thighs and arms), super irregular periods, and lost a lot of hair. My skin also got more oily and I was getting more facial hair. So I saw a few GPs and a few Gynecologists, and they all came to the conclusion that I had developed polycystic ovary syndrome, which basically means my body can't really produce female hormones like normal. They all advised me to go back on the pill! But somehow in my mind I still think that the pill has caused all these problems since it stopped my body from producing hormones of its own for so many years.
But I couldn't stand the breakouts and the doctors kept saying that my condition could get worse if I don't go back on the pill, so I did (after about 9 months off it). I resumed in Feb this year. My skin has become less oily, I've had less breakouts (but I'm still getting quite a lot), and less facial hair. But I'm getting period pain again.
I still feel very conflicted about whether to continue on the pill. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar and has recovered from the side effects. It'd be great if you can share your experience with me!
Jen, did your doctors tell you the same thing about the possibility of having polycystic ovary syndrome and advise you to go back on the pill? Do you still suffer the side effects now?

I have the same condition! However...I was diagnosed with polycyst ovarian syndrome before going on the pill (I never got my period. Got an ultrasound and doctors said this was why) so I was prescribed birth control in order for me to get a monthly period...& it works! I get my monthly periods, and the cysts go away and come back often(don't know why).
I also got hair loss, oily skin (although that may normal for me?)

thank you for this video and for being so open about what happened to you. I had the same symptoms after only year of taking the pill, and I know many women who took it longer and it took them sevral years to get their natural hormne balance back.
Yes, the European doctors prescribe the pill like it was candy to everybody but think about it - you totally block something in one of the most sensitive and most important systems in your human body - your hormone system so it's just logical that taking the pill or then later getting off it will have severe effects on your system.
And one always have to have in mind that for pharma companies selling the pill is big busniess so one can think about what is the priority for such companiy, making money or the health of a woman somewhere in the world.
How are you feeling now, today?

  • @kawaiikimuchi

Too late for me ;( I was prescribed it just because I had bad acne, my parents are the same and believe in being all natural and I want to get off, but when I tried to go off I had bad things happen too such as so much oil and acne, so I stayed on (..) I will try again when I won't be so self conscious about acne anymore. This was a good heartfelt video, I believe the same ideas too and I hope some girls will appreciate themselves more after watching this :)

I was on yasmin for a year+ when I was a teenager. When I came off it is when all my side effects kicked in. Not only did I get awful cystic acne all over after stopping it but I developed severe mental health problems during and after they got 10x worse and now have severe anxiety and co-morbid depression. I gained 4 stone whilst on it also. A lot of people have blood clots and gall bladder issues. All ways weigh up the risk of taking these sort of medications and the risk of not taking them. Some people are fine, some people's bodies just can't handle it. Condoms are what we use and I've never had an issue.

Aww you seem like such a genuinely nice person! I had a similar experience! Went on the pill and then got dumped and the pill made matters worse! Thank you so much 4 sharing ur experience, since it's such a personal thing - not everyone would talk about it... My mom always advised me to not take the pills too (& we're chinese, I guess asians don't like medicamental treatment in general?), so I never did because I'm scared that it would affect my hormonal balance too much. And I'm thankful that my BF respects my decision...

Thank you so much for sharing, you are a such beautiful and a brave person, trying your best to help others. Yes the pill is very bad for our body, I am in my middle age never taken the pill before, a year ago I was on the pill for my painful period not for birth control, after a few months I can feel the taste of metallic in my mouth, not noticing other stuff, and then had a check up, found out my liver function was abnormal, not too serious but still. By that time I took the pill for about 6 months, so I started to do a lot of research on the pill, it turned out it caused liver damage, so I had stopped straight away. Women should definitely not to be bullied into taking the pills for sure. Thanks again.

Hi, I had a really bad experience with the pill! I never did any research before starting the pill so I did not know how dangerous it was. I was taking the pill and got pregnant from what is called breakthrough ovulation and we were delight because we were married and were happy to welcome a baby! Sadly we lost that baby and the doctor said it was because I was on the pill! I came off the pill and practiced natural birth control and I use a Lady-Comp but you can just use something like charting and temping! Your body is made to have cycles so you can monitor them and you can actually only get pregnant for 6 days in your cycle!! Please do the research before you choose your birth control!!

Thank you for this video! I think these topics can not be talked about often enough! I've been on the pill for over 5 years now but I think that even in 3 years your body still changes - even after puberty. I remember having a really regular period at the beginning, but it became creazily irregular even before starting to take birth control. so maybe some "symptoms" you experienced are not due to the pill, but due to the fact that they were repressed by the pill...? Just a thought..
