  • Chief Bisi Akande, former Chairman of Afenifere in Osun State, former Governor of Osun State, and ex-National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), declares that Afenifere, the once-powerful pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, is "dead and gone." He reflects on the decline of the group and its loss of influence, and what this means for Yoruba political unity.
As the author of My Participation: An Autobiography, Akande shares deep insights into his political journey and the shifting dynamics of Yoruba leadership.
Is Afenifere truly finished, or is there still a future for the organisation?

This baba is a politician. Bola Ige was known as very bashing with word, he rubbed a lot people the wrong way, especially the Afenifere people, including the elders who saw him to be rude. Bola Ige's greatest undoing, was contesting against baba Alayande, in the 79 AG primary gubernatorial, Bola Ige defeated Alayande, and went on to become the governor of Oyo state. He also didn't relinquish the option to recontest in 83, as expected. This was infact against the wish of Awolowo. Baba Alayande waited for his revenge, for decades, we heard what happened at D Rovans hotel, as Bola Ige was sidelined and Falaye nominated, in a primary that was to unanimously nominate Bola Ige.

AFENIFERE was never a registered political party, but it was the propelling movement of people behind the Action Group that was registered. Afenifere existed with Action Group. Baba Akande could therefore not be right on the formation of Afenifere by the late Chief Bola Ige.

    • @Boyemindset

But remember that Action group was more like Yoruba party at the time. PDP was more of northern party. So, Afenifere could be used to influence action group candidate. Bisi Akande, as Governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003, implemented significant reforms in the education sector. He established technical colleges in all nine federal constituencies, built housing units for teachers in rural schools, and introduced a school farming system.
At the time, many schools in Osun had about 70% of their teachers specializing in subjects like Islamic Religious Knowledge (IRK), Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK), Physical and Health Education (PHE), and Yoruba, while there was a shortage of science-based teachers. To address this imbalance, Akande took the bold step of restructuring the teaching workforce, replacing non-science teachers with those qualified in science-related subjects.
The impact of his policies became evident in 2004 under Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, when Osun State’s WAEC performance improved significantly. This success was a direct result of Akande’s proactive reforms, which laid a strong foundation for better educational outcomes.
While his methods may have been controversial, the long-term benefits of his policies cannot be ignored. True leadership is about making difficult decisions for a better future, and Akande’s contributions to Osun’s education system reflect that vision.

The same scheme went dragging because Ajasin took over on the demise of Awolowo but leadership went back to the Ijebu subgroup again.
The main reason they despise Adebanjo and clinged to Fasoranti who personally resigned on the account of old age and sight.
