For hatmakers Evetta Petty, Kathy Anderson and Wanda Chambers, the church hat is a crown, and when a woman puts one on, she becomes a queen. The three milliners have dedicated their lives to crafting elaborate and vibrant hats, seen everywhere from pews of churches to the pages of Vogue. For them, the right hat is a religious experience, a piece of art worn atop the head. Now, they’re hoping to pass the crown down to the next generation.

Everybody grandma used to have competition at church on Sundays
I never knew why older women would wear hats on Sundays. I thought it was just a trend. I didn’t understand the significance or the true meaning of them. Now that I have been educated about it . All I know is that I’m about to buy me a lot of Crowns. This video was so enlightening. Thanks so much!

I love wearing my hats to church, I stand out in a crowd as I am near enough the only one 😜. I have lots of beautiful hats and wondered if anyone had ideas for displays. Mine are mostly in hat boxes for protection but sometimes it is frustrating finding the one I want. I love that my hat is my crown, I am a daughter of The King after all xxx

I see a lot of people in the comments trying to figure out were the tradition came from what I was told it most likely stems from the early Christian or more likely colonial practice of having women cover their hair in public. Most of the earlier sects of Christianity such as Syriac, orothodox and catholic encouraged women to wear chapel veils in the presence of god. Hats and Other head large headdresses became apart of the everyday dress of Christian women like those in the Middle Ages. In colonial America many southern states also prohibited Africans from displaying their natural hair public. These hats probably are mixture of the two ideologies.

Every Christian culture had its own preferred head covering for women in church. English women often wore hats, and most of the country's culture was originally imported from England. The southern states in particular had a high population of English immigrants that attended the Episcopal church (the American branch of the Church of England). And the south is inherently tied up to African American history, of course.
Some of these hats have a more African shape, but your traditional "church crown" hat is of English origin.
Also, down here, the episcopal church has a large black congregation, and I still see women wear hats in episcopal churches. It's more common with black women, and you will also see more diverse hats and occasionally scarves as well, but occasionally you will see a white woman with an English style hat. It's often a sign of being devout, as they're following the tradition, visibly looking more "serious" about the tradition than the other women who aren't wearing hats. Though, it's just a hat at the end of the day.
As a male hat enthusiast I love these ladies! Two thing I must have when I leave the house are shoes on my feet and a hat on my head!

It is really great to see the hats and opinions about hats. COGIC women really wear lovely hats and I'm sure there are other churches where you can see so many hats. However, as I was growing up many women had hats on especially Sunday's. Many women have discontinued wearing hats and even dressing up. Because I grew up seeing woman wear hats and brooches etc. I believe that women should put those hats back on and continue to express their feminity and finesse. I love beautiful hats, ladies keep bring you don't let the style sit and die out. Especially at Easter. Put the bonnet on and enjoy your beauty. I'm following my grandmother's footsteps. ❤❤❤
I miss seeing women in hats and all dressed up on a Sunday. I have about 40 church hats that I no longer wear. Seeing this may just inspire me to pull them out of the boxes and start wearing them again. Also, a woman in a hat commands respect as she comes and goes anywhere.❤

So true so true ladies I grew up watching grandma, big mom, my mother and other ladies in the community on Sunday morning ALWAYS wearing hat 2 church . Oh don't forget gloves😊. Lordy Lordy we got so much 2 teach this younger generation about our traditions. Hat! Gloves! Handbag! Lace socks or tigh for girls!

I love hats so pretty when they compliment outfits, I got my first hat at age 10 it was a pretty pink one with pearls and I felt so sophisticated in it.I know in the UK some women wear hats to weddings and other special events. I think here in the USA it’s not as common🤔

It's from the church, as in the name. It was tradition for women to cover their heads in some form. Each culture has their own preferred head covering. English women wore hats, and that tradition was brought to America.
After Vatican second council made head covering optional, most other churches, which didn't even require it but merely had it as a custom, also followed suit and it became less common. Nowadays the younger catholics are wearing veils and headscarves again, so I hope the younger protestants start wearing hats again as well.

Alright Mothers! I used to love seeing the older women in church in their big, flashy church hats. I used to think they made them by hand just to have for church. Because I never saw anyone wear one outside of the sanctuary. Hahahahaha.

The church hat is very cultural and goes back to African traditions probably.
There are a lot of West African cultures that have beautiful headdresses which may have inspired this, but honestly the hat styles remind me less of the gele/duku-style wrapped fabric of West Africa and reminds me more so of the hats worn at the Royal Ascot Raceday in Britain. I wonder if the influence came from there.

Bummer! I typically love Great Big Story's videos, but this one lacked substance. It didn't speak anything about the tradition -- just that some people wear them and that these ladies make them. There was zero explained about the tradition, the history... nothing. I hope that there will be a follow-up to this video with more details, or for future stories keep in mind that the title sets the expectations of the story. This one didn't hit the mark, despite the lovely ladies and their beautiful hats.

I had to stop watching at 20 seconds. The hat is not about signalling luxury or power, it's a sign of humility. Those hats are beautiful but half of them are too luxurious for church. A hat should only be colored for the sake of matching an outfit, so as not to show neglect, but a plain straw hat is preferable. Of course this all assumes a protestant or anglican heritage, catholics or orthodox wear veils or scarves.
Sunday is unbiblical so wearing hats onna sunday isnt required😎
