I was surfing through the Solomon Islands in the early 90’s and we met Eroni. He showed us the letter JFK had sent him after the war signed by JFK with the US Presidential seal. He told us the entire story via an interpreter. JFK had that coconut husk with the message on his desk in the White House. Amazing survival story.
The u.s. government should have honored him with a monthly paycheck. As poor as that place is a one time award payment would have been burned through faster than a drunken sailor on liberty burns through his paycheck. They’re obviously getting something because they honor JFK by naming one of the rescuers children after him. The rescuers have to be nearly a hundred years old now. To have young children as they do says a great deal about their culture. Probably why JFK liked it so much. Great content and thanks for sharing. It would not surprise me, and explain the Shell Money on his grave. Because Shell money is usually for marriage or love. 😀
