Splatoon 2 has got to be one of the WORST Splatoon games in the series. This does not necessarily make it HORRIBLE but it makes me love and appreciate Splatoon 3 a WHOLE LOT more!
Join me @ProChara , @BrianTheDrummer , @LuisCl256 , @ddee_ssbu and many others as we revisit Splatoon 2 in 2023 with all the missiles, laser and main power up!

Splatoon fans in 2024-2025: Splatoon 2 is underrated
sounds like the sonic fandom lol
I think once splatoon 3 dies more people will go back to splatoon 1. the melee of splatoon games. time will tell
@@frankunodostres473 Splatoon 1's competitive scene died in 2017
@@lol-ih1tl because the next one came out. many (well not that many but yknow what I mean) still play it and it is growing in popularity lately. could be nostalgia of course but there is a reason it aged better than splatoon 2
@@frankunodostres473 it didn't age better than Splatoon 2, Splatoon 2 is just in its weird middle child phase, which is no different from the position GTA4 was when GTA5 was new (or the position GTA5 will be when GTA6 is new).
I miss Splatoon 2 a little bit but only cause weapons like Dynamo and Nautilus had better kits there.
well it's a matter of time before we get new kits for those weapons, hopefully they're just as good if not better.
@@theltenetwork9203 dynamo is good in the current meta, literally consistently 1-2 shots which is hella annoying
@@Ihonestlydek haven’t played since the patch but considering the damage buff that checks out. I miss how consistent the weapon was in splatoon 1 though.
@@theltenetwork9203 Gold Dynamo should be in the next season update, the weapon model is in the files along with neo splash (which is funnily enough donning a new silver colour, the opposite of Dynamo's silver to gold).
Also Naut's kit isn't bad, storm combos with the main and it isn’t something that takes you out of the insane main weapon for long either. (Plus object damage even without OS eats crabs for breakfast)
Both have nice kits, just tacticooler isn't a good special at the moment because it doesn't deal with crab
I know most only talk about the bad when it comes to Splatoon 2 due to how bad the endgame meta became because of the broken specials, Main Power Up and etc, but there were some positives.
Splatoon 2 introduced both the Splat Dualies and Splat Brella weapon classes, which at one point in time during Splatoon 2's lifespan were decent weapons and were rather fun to use (at least until players figured out how broken Tenta Missiles were, and before Main Power UP and some of the kensa shooters were added into the game which had Missiles).
Shifty Stations were also pretty fun as it made each Splatfest feel unique since each stage was unique and had their own gimick (I wish they had introduced some of the single player assets in some of the multiplayer stages but with the current Splatoon 3 maps... I don't that's going to happen).
And as others probably already mentioned Splatoon 2 also introduced Salmon Run as a gamemode and created a entire sub-community of dedicated Salmon Run players that wouldn't existed without Splatoon 2 and there's also the Octo Expansion that introduced playable Octolings and a great and challenging single player story.
Yes, the competitive scene (and ranked/turf war in general) did suffer at the end with how bad the special design was and resulted in a single weapon class dominating the game due to them having said broken specials that worked with the main weapon, but there were other parts of the game that were good.
About Shifty Stations: I think it's important to consider that Marina built them all. She's been busy with her band, but who knows what's going to happen after the DLC that appears to be focused around her, pearl, and Chaos vs Order?
Splatoon 3 maps are really great
While it is arguably the worst, Splatoon 2 was undoubtedly important to the series, since most current Splatoon fans got likely their start there, as well as introducing Salmon Run and playable Octolings.
EDIT: It also brought us Dubble Bath (DIY Remix), the importance of which cannot be overlooked.
True and it had a useable ultra stamp
Splatoon 2 had the best splatfests!
It brought us Pearl and Marina as well, along with dualies, and brellas (strange that they removed brellas in 3, huh?)
@@sonicrunn3r895 seriously, so much new content, like weapons, kensa kits, shifty stations the game is overhated in my eyes
@@Alex-qb8vl The only reason the game is hated now is the 5 last patches it got, they made sure to destroy plenty of stuff before the end. Mid-Splatoon 2 time was a source for some of the fondest Splatoon memories I have, even if I sucked back then. The game's state went downhill from Octo Expansion tbh, it was the peak
i can't believe they were like "yeah we should bring damage up back, it was so great"
I remember when Splatoon 2 first came out. I was so excited, it felt like July 2017 couldn't come sooner. I loved it when I played it, but I thought that the only thing different about it from Splatoon 1 was the addition of Salmon Run. Whereas 3 has WAAAAAAAY more additions from 2. I have around 575 hours in Splatoon 3, and I'm still not bored of it.
How can a game look so fun and so infuriating at the same time, splatty toon never change
As much as Splatoon 2 was goofy at least it had better splatfests
Fair point
Milk Chocolate does go crazy though 🙂
But you see Dude, us dark chocolate players have a much more refined palate
(we can all agree we’re better than white chocolate)
@@ThatSrb2DUDE agreed milk choccy for the win
I don't agree, S2 literally had toilet paper vs toilet paper
good luck with the streamer awards! just know im voting for you dude!
Every Splatoon game has that broken/op aspect to them, the problem with Splatoon 2 though is that none of the meta/op stuff was fun to deal with, global ranged specials will low-skill floors, main power-up, shooters only, etc.
Other problems with Splatoon 2 include but not limited to:
-Unskippable news that's twice as long as Splatoon 1.
-Salmon run being closed at certain times
-Having the worst single-player campaign (Unoriginal, Unchallenging, and Inferior final boss)
-Despite simultaneously having the best single-player campaign as well, it is sadly locked behind a paywall.
-Bad motion controls
-Coins being mostly worthless, you cannot upgrade gear with coins in this game for some stupid reason;
-Worse multiplayer soundtrack (?), though this is a matter of taste
-Having nothing to do while in the waiting room (no minigames nor being able to practice with weapons)
Splatoon 2 story mode boss was way better than 3’s
We owe a lot to Splatoon 2. Since the wii u didn't sell well not many people played the first game
“Chara’s mob squad of editor” made me laugh lol
kinda just miss some of the maps :(
Fr, the map design in 2 was a lot of creative and fun tbh.
Splatoon 2 is where Nintendo started to dumb down the maps, and now we have 3S map design.
Most of the good stages from 2 were from one lol
@@discussingwhattodo5381 As someone who hasn't got Splatoon 3, it's bizarre to hear that the stage design is worse. One of my biggest problems with 2 is that so many maps in it follow that high area at the backs, pit in the middle format that they blend together. The maps I played in the 3 demo were really generic, but I assumed they'd at least be better overall. Kinda funny that the opposite is true
I totally agree with you. Splatoon 1 was iconic for being the first Splatoon game, Splatoon 2 while still good was somewhat disappointing with the way it felt super goofy and all over the place. Splatoon 3 has fixed many of Splatoon 2's errors and it feels like the dominant Splatoon game
Splatoon 2 will forever had a special place in my heart.
People will lie about the issues splat1 had tho 😭
I won't miss undetectable stealth jump blasters ever but holy bubbler kraken and inkzooka were so fun 😊
My favourite part about Splatoon 2 was the ink, it looked a lot more satisfying than either 1 or 3
I miss Splatoon 2.
Same. Even with all its problems.
Agreed
i dont
Me too. Hopefully Splatoon 3 will be on it's level by the end of it's update cycle, but I'm somewhat doubtful, since my main issue is Turf War being less fun due to stage design.
@@clefairyfan333 also aren’t able to be on random teams with friends lol
as bad as the game is, I do have many great memories spent in it. And I as probably many others will remember it fondly solely because of that. That camera movement is atrocious though wowie
"I would've been fine playing Splatoon 1 another five years"
Ngl... Same lol
Regardless of how I feel about the gameplay, maps, story mode, controls, weapons, etc., one thing I really liked about Splatoon 2 was the interesting and unique music.
I like the music in all three games, but something about the experimental feel of 2's hit with me.
I voted for you in everything I think would fit your streaming.
I love your content and watching your vids and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next.
♥
Nah, dont relate. I’ve been playing this franchise nonstop since 2015, and I can confidently say that all Splatoons have been an super fun time for me. I love how all the games have their own unique personalities and I still love each one of them even with all their issues. I honestly don’t think any of them are fundamentally worse than the other. And I can’t wait to make fun, frustrating, and happy memories with Splatoon 3😊
I use to like Splatoon 2 it was first introduction into Splatoon but the more I played the more I faced the special of Tenta missles,String ray and the horrible terrible Ink armor. And I played E-liter backline is the role I’m much more comfortable with and you always seen the same weapons being played while in Splatoon 3 you see a little more diverse in weapons instead of always seeing Gal 52,Kensa splatter shot,N-Zap and Jet. Tho I do miss some of the music in Splatoon 2,the shifty stations and some of the gear like Gas Mask I hope they bring that into Splatoon 3. Overall I like Splatoon 2 cause I made friends through and I found a shooter game I actually enjoy. Will I ever go back to Splatoon 2? Heck no I love Squid Surge and Tri-stringer too much to go back.
Splatoon 2 is the only game in the series I completely missed out on, don’t ask how it’s a long story. Despite being a Splatoon 1 veteran there is a huge gap in my Splatoon experience until recently. Wish I had gotten the chance to go back to it, but now that 3 is out I don’t have much incentive to.
How
that's super fair man! Octo Expansion is definitely one hell of a motivator for splatoon 2, but with that being mad expensive and online being obsolete there's really nothing left to do
If you see 2 decently discounted 2nd hand at some point, go for it just for OE! Definitely worth it
@@BADLUCKCHARM octo expansion is not expensive💀
But, you end up buying both Splatoon 2 and the dlc. Kind've a waste of money. Unless you can get Splatoon 2 cheap somewhere.
I wish the special's were broken like in Splatoon 1. The special's in 3 and especially 2 feel so tame and not very "special" imo.
Watching this made me feel like Chara purposely only left a frame of him dying to Splashdown lol
I do miss splatoon 2. its my first splatoon and the memories i made with it where special to me. might be the worst objectivly for some people but its still my favorite splatoon (until I played splatoon 3 for a while longer that is. I value memories I make with games a lot)
I think it depends on what you want in a game. Splatoon 1 had a broken, unfixable meta with countless problems, but people like it more than S2 because it was chaotic. I personally like S2 more just because it was more polished and had more content, if it the meta was missile, armor, and ray
I liked 2 more then 1 and 3 fixes a lot of these problems the first two games had
I like splatoon 3 much more
*clicks on video*
“Splatoon 2 is the akward middle child-“
Me: ive seen enough, im satisfied
Personally I had more fun with Splatoon 2 than Splatoon 3 mostly due to having more time playing 2 than 3 bc time. The maps in 3 feel more annoying, I’ve run into more disconnects with 3, and the Splatfest in 2 felt for creative and fun. 3 definitely improved on many things 2 did like Salmon run and skipping news. Yet it doesn’t give me that “new” feel that I’ve barely touched it
You summed it up perfectly
I've played to get to s+2, then just stopped playing.
I had more fun with 2 cuz brella works more
So far the best explanation I have heard
I've put a combined total of like 1500 hours between Splatoon 1 and 2. Was excited when they announced 3, but then when they showed the game off more in depth I realized that it didn't have a lot of additional content that I was interested in, and ya know what I didn't buy it. Glad to hear that I was right in my assumption here. Also, I played the demo for the game and I agree about the maps. The ones on rotation in the demo seemed to have an obsession with locking lots of sections off with grate platforms, kinda annoying.
I actually miss MPU because of how silly it was
I really loved Splat 2 when the meta was already broken, it made everything more *Chaotic*
I miss Pearl and Marina. Best Splatoon mascots
so i just got splatoon 2 today. i have never played any splatoon games before. and from what i have played its pretty cool. i am not used to the controls yet lol. i plan on getting 3 for my birthday next weekend. im still happy about getting my first splatoon game.
13:07 He legit embraced his inner Anna
1:48 say no more I’ll vote as many times as possible B^[
Tbf, Splatoon 2 for the context that it was released in, was a pretty good game. not only did it come out two years after the first one, which is a pretty small time gap. But it was one of the first games to come out on the switch. So not only did they have the pressure to make a good sequel, but to port the game to a new console which wasn't even released at the moment and was still in it's development. And out of all the games from 2017, splatoon 2 is the only one that still gets talked about after all these years (I mean, remember when we said ARMS was gonna be the next splatoon?)
Good luck in the streamer awards DUDE! Btw I voted for u in rising star
Yeah the online play wasn’t fun, but the hero mode and most of all the Octo Expansion was fire. Splat 3’s story mode is fun- but I hope Splat 3’s dlc is also great
Splatoon 1 is completely broken balance-wise but fun as hell.
Splatoon 3 is mostly balanced and still very fun.
Splatoon 2 is very unbalanced and heavily promotes not actually engaging in fights and instead just spamming specials. Oh yeah and don't forget the game was left on a very boring quad shooter meta.
For some who has played both games that is so true
@@maplemiles3381 There are 3 though...?
S3 > S2
Waaaay better Splatoon game by a mile and it's still so young in its life span
@@angrydiddykong262 agree, and Splatoon 3 will only keep getting better from here. In 5 years time it will be impossible to even remember that Splatoon 2 exists!
@@SuspiciousTemmie I'm a flex but I mainly play hero shot
S1 & S3 >>>>> S2 easily
can you not turn motion controls off on splatoon 2 like you can in 3? i only just got into 3 so i have no idea how 2 was.
"this is not overwatch" had me rolling dude LOL
I don't even play ana 😂
I played this the other day and it was a lot more boring than I thought it was going to be.
I played a single match of Splatoon 2 zones yesterday.
I'm never doing that again.
The maps on sploon 2 never allowed me to cook.. but now that I have sploon 3 I’m Gorden Ramsey
Splatoon 2 is better than 1 and 3 because more team-minded specials(armor, bubble blower) , and better team-minded weapons (tenta sorella brella, tenta brella, nzap) and etc.
Dude is a rising star, let’s do this!
Splatoon 3 is my first splatoon game and I love it, I actually got used to gyro aiming very quickly, I never felt confortable aiming with the joysticks on controller, always preferred mouse for this kind of game.
This video made me want to play Splatoon 3
I never played splatoon 2, I played 1 and loved it. I only got my switch last year and knew splatoon 3 was coming so I never bought 2. I recently bought 3 and really enjoy it. I was considering also buying 2 but I ended up deciding not too and this video helped me make a decision
Good decision. Splatoon 2 is dead now. I can't get into any solo Q ranked matches
Chara dies 25 times each match lmao.
I went on splatoon 2 servers a few days ago and it is like maintenance will end in 5h
If I’m going to be dead honest. And please don’t get mad at me, but I think Splatoon 3 kinda ruined my love for the Splatoon series, yeah there’s some cool new features but….. it just didn’t feel the same. Splatoon 2 was the first Splatoon game I’ve ever played like many fans, I never had a wii growing up, I got a Nintendo a couple years ago and one of the first games I had was splatoon 2 and I loved it! I was so in love with it I practically did everything possible in the game. I went as far as buying every weapon and every clothing in the game even buying all the amiibos. And trust me I have about 1500 hours on Splatoon 2. I was so excited for Splatoon 3 but I think my excitement went down when they revealed the idols and here’s why. During the time I was waiting for this game to come out I created a very accurate fan fic in 2021. I loved the characters so much that I made, that I even made them an idol group. I was so confident Nintendo would like them that I was thinking of sending them into Nintendo. And may I say there’s 3 members in the band……..kinda sus Nintendo.
But my hopes and dreams were shattered when they revealed shiver cause she looks very! I mean very! Similar to my guy idol Toevin. But basically I had a lot of fun playing the world premiere. Until the full game came out. Almost every battle I played I lost… and trust me I was no noob in splat 2 I was level 82. This got so bad I stopped having fun and so was my best friend. We both stopped playing splatoon intirely. Something was just not fun about it anymore. And I went back to Splatoon 2 and I instantly was in joying the battle. So I just decided to let it go. To find a new favorite game. And I did, I gave pokemon a try and I really liked it. And I played undertale for the first time and it’s now my favorite game. Bro I ligit ditched totk for that game still haven’t even finished it yet because of undertale.
But anyway I really hope someone else can relate to me
I mean, at least in this game you can flank. Can't say the same of Splatoon 3 as of February 2023.
Splatoon 2 kinda has the weakest personality music wise
Edit: (not including octo expansion, only multiplayer)
I personally think 3 is the worst currently because it just feels like 2 with new features. Doesn’t stand out to me. Hopefully this direct today gives us a big Splatoon 3 update
I don't know splatoon 3 does stand out more then splatoon 2 since it has better music, better weapons with their meta, and I see a lot of improvements in the third game then the second game. Also splatoon 3 is more fun and balanced and being content pack
Everyone's calling Splatoon 2 the worst right now, but if a 4th game gets made, I bet it's gonna be another Smash situation where people will start making fun of 3 and saying 2 is underrated.
dude my motion controls would go crazy on splat 2 so much. I thought it was my joycons fault. so it happend to everyone?
The only thing I miss from Splatoon 2 is the slick special bar ui and the old stages and the music. I don’t miss missles tho, the art style kinda looks greasy with a bloom effect tho idk why.
didnt Watch a single minute but i already know its good.
As someone who played splat 2 again recently, it's both fun, yet very infuriating at the same time lmao
When I play 3 it feels more fun and balance
splatoon 2 is wild 😭 ppl killing each other cause splatoon 3 is here
"charas mob of editors" LOL
Me having splatoon 3 but going to buy sploon 2 and o to expansions: uhhhhhh is okkkk…
splatoon 2 doesn’t feel so chaotic and I prefer that
True but chaos is sorta the whole point of splatoon 3
team order fan:
It helps that it had overall better map design. Splatoon 3 is the mechanically superior game, and I like it better overall, but most of the maps are way to cramped with too many choke points, too little cover, and a lack of adequate flank routes. The only truly good maps in S3 are probably Inkblot(which is from S2), Sturgeon Shipyard(again, another S2 map), Museum(which is from S1), Flounder Heights(again, another from S1),and maybe Hagglefish Market. That means that S3 only has ONE original stage that is well designed! They REALLY need to do better! I hope the next stage isn't so cramped and Inhope it actually has flanks!
Hey i have 2 questions whats your main and do you use motion controls
Yes! My jumping splashdowns. How I’ve missed you
reasons to play splatoon 2:
squid beats
easier salmon run
octo expansion
????
To be fair, at least I could play splatoon 2 with my friend without getting disconnected/lagged on a bunch, plus I liked the creativity in map design in 2. Probably an unpopular opinion but I don't really like the map design or matchmaking system in 3 either. I also miss the shifty stations in the splatfests, I'm kinda disappointed that they don't have shifty stages in tricolor matches in 3.
Lag/connection/wifi is 110% on your end. I have excellent internet and I'm beyond sick of people blaming their horrible services/wifi on a game. It's your fault, not the games. No argument. It's objective.
@@tiredofinternetculture I mean that's certaintly true to some extent, but I've done a little bit of experimentation and this kind of stuff doesn't happen with any other game, but if you have any suggestions on how to fix it I'd gladly take them.
@Henry the problem with splatoon 3, ssbu, etc is really simple. The switch is mostly a wifi system; there are too many variables to consider i.e. distance from router, quality of upload speed, service package, throttling, multiple users soaking up internet bandwidth. In an ideal splatoon/ssbu world, people would invest in Lan adapters (exempt oled) or try to buy an internet package for gaming. In today's gaming world, the amount of bandwidth needed depending on games is kind of absurd. Your connection will solely depend on your upload speed i.e. tick rate to server side. Splatoon 3 puts multiple regions in one pool but has an incredible server capable of adjusting tick rates for minimal latency. The sole problem with disconnects and "lag" in splatoon 3 comes from one of these many variables (also, the very small children that play this game on God knows what internet plan) so, ultimately, it will always be an issue because of players who don't have speeds/environments for gaming. They deserve to have fun too but it's at our expense. The only solution if your internet is bad would be to buy an adapter and play wired. If that's not possible, your only other option is to eradicate as much bandwidth usage on your limited network i.e. phones, laptops, smart tvs, watches, etc (you should understand the grand picture by now) and play within a respectable distance of your router. I can only imagine how many people have mediocre to poor internet connections and are trying to play across the house. Not everyone can buy multiple routers to even out bandwidth usage and it's safe to say a lot of people playing switch don't have optimal gaming situations/setups. Solution = take whatever precautions to ensure your connection is stable. If your wifi signal is 2 bars, you're already setting yourself up for mixed results. Hope this gives perspective or helps. Internet is a privilege, I understand but the reality is that it's very necessary to have a decent upload speed. Take care.
@Henry also, you can't play a man down in splatoon for obvious reasons which makes people with poor internet a time bomb for lobbies.
@@tiredofinternetculture Gotcha, that all makes sense, btw thanks for the help!
8:05 I feel like this should be a primary shoe ability in Splatoon 3, being about 1/3 to 1/4 the paint size, dealing 30 damage very close to it, 20 near the center, and 10 at the edge, along with having a different jump marker. I only play Splatoon casually, so I don't know if this is too strong, weak, or should not be in the game for other reasons.
Edit: Another nerf of it would probably be that it only works for your first super jump.
I'd have to HARD disagree on this take. While yes 2 did have its issues like MPU, unhealthy specials, and sometimes odd controls, it made up for the fact that it did nothing but improve what S1 had to offer, with some new additions like Salmon Run and Octo Expansion. Compared to S3, I'd gladly take S2 oddities over S3 terrible map designs, disconnects left and right, poor matchmaking, ranged weapons being untouchable, rabid shooters everywhere, better fests, (and this is a based take) worse idols. There's a few more nit picks in there, but those are the main things for me. S3 is still young, but it's been months and these problems have barely been addressed. And when they do, they don't really do much...
I will still play S3 over S2 simply due to the player base being larger and S2 (unfortunately) being nearly dead, but I will give credit to where it's due. S3 has better movement, controls, and introduced Splatanas and Stringers, which is something I've always wanted. (Even though there isn't rly any point in using Stringers over Chargers unless you're a gigachad.) It's just that everything else is just meh, and again, especially with maps.
I’m gonna go back to this game sometimes and have fun by treating this game like a joke
Splatoon 3 is just splatoon 2.5. Nothing much major changed. No new modes. Splatoon 2 had way more hype, literally nearly every night discord channels were packed in voice chat playing splatoon 2. New weapons were mega hype! Like the umbrella, not just reskinned ones. And than fort nite came out and killed it off a bit on switch and slowly died out from there. Everyone has moved on from the switch a bit now.
I play splatoon 2 more than 3 now due to maps alone. I only turn on splatoon 3 during a good grizz rotation or splatfest/big run. Im weird I know since it takes forever to get a lobby 🤣🤣🤣

I hope they bring Port Mackerel back.
Only thing good about splatoon 2 in my opinion is Octo expansion, clam blitz, and the introduction into salmon run
I had been preaching this since the launch of Splatoon two. I heavily dislike Splatoon two. I can list many reason why I dislike Splatoon compared to the original and three.
I get that, splatoon 2 has the most issues out of all of them however it does have a useable ultra stamp.
I've never played Splatoon 1 but I much prefer the weapons and specials of Splatoon 2 to Splatoon 3 and really miss them personally.
I kinda miss bubble blower tbh
Finally! I've been saying this since forever
Splatoon 2 just has better story mode, remove that and you're left with an inferior copy of splatoon 1
splatoon 1 was way more fun to play, didn't take itself too seriously and on top of that wasn't afraid of unleashing weapons that were broken to the ground, instead it decided to make everything else counter that broken option with an equally exploitable alternative
the changes Splatoon 2 did to "fix" what wasn't an issue on the first place made it lose a lot of the charm the original game had
and I sicerely wish splatoon 3 had an option to revert all these changes
Splatoon 2 invented salmon run which gets disregarded a lot and i dont see why
@@Alex-qb8vl I'd argue the addition of Salmon Run alone is more significant than anything added to 3.
