    I did a bit of research on Neom to help with an essay my sister was writing on Saudi Arabia's recent push towards tourism, and felt the need to say this: Neom was advertised as being built on a "virgin" area, but part of the site has been the home to the Huwaitat tribe for generations, and now at least 20,000 of them are being forcibly evicted and displaced to build this flashy tourism trap. Abdul Rahim al-Huwaiti was a strong advocate for the tribe on social media, and was killed by Saudi police after he refused to give up his home. Human rights groups have labelled his death as an extrajudicial killing done to set an example.
    Edit: More recently in 2022 and 2023, 3 people were sentenced to death for resisting eviction and many others were arrested

      I don't get how can you say an opinion as a matter of fact. There are so many projects that the kingdom has announced and officially finished with them. One of the latest ones was the Kingdom arena (a football stadium that was built in 3 months and held two games in so far and the finale is Thursday) and the biggest most influential project was with the Holy Mosque that you can see so many space photos taken that show how much work has been done and thats FREE there is no money made from sales of water or cost of electricity or fees for bathrooms and wages for employees literally none, you pay for transportation and hotel and thats goes to the business and even with taxes the Gov would not recover more than 5% of the costs. The thing is, there are projects by countless countries that has not seen the light of day (e.g CA bullet train that was announced 15 years ago and not single mile of the track laid). Honestly, I can't unsee the elitism that some people from "1st world countries" have when talking about projects that they would have want to have if their countries weren't in major political battles with financial issues. I didn't finish the vid yet but eventually will.

      It's a lot harder to design more public transportation and green spaces in a already existing city, since you have to take into account everything already there, and there isn't a lot of empty spaces so to create all of that, so you need to expropiate more things to create those (and therefore need a lot more money than to create the same in a empty space!!) for a solution that will never be perfect (for preexisting transport, historical buildings, etc) ... So I understand why it's easier to create on a "blank slate" like they did in Brasilia..
      But it's true that just because something it's easier doesn't mean that it's the more worthwhile decision....

It is in fact more practical and a better return on investment to improve existing cities than to go build a new one. Brasilia seems to be the most successful of all the blank slate cities, but everyone else who's tried it has ended up with a ghost city or an overpriced potemkin city.

    An important thing these “trailblazers” forget to include is staff. Think about how many people it takes to run one restaurant. One parking garage. One mechanic shop. You could boil it down real simply to for every 1 customer there’s at least 3 employees assisting them. Where will the employees live. In the illustrious complex? I doubt it.

      Sewage? Food sources? Employment/Employees? Medicine?
      Who cares! We have these snazzy mockups of restaurants and we've already planned out where you can drive your boat inside!
      I guarantee they designed the idea before figuring out architectural feasibility. I know I wouldn't trust this place to cave in on me, given they didn't think structural supports were worth including in the concept art 😂

    NEOM is smoke and mirrors. The amount of desalinization needed is more than exists in the world now. It would take more power than a city to run. There's nowhere to grow food nearby, so it would be worse than an island like Hawaii. It's still in Saudi Arabia so it would need massive cooling.

    • @gaerekxenos
      @gaerekxenos 4 місяці тому +9

      Probably less on the cooling, considering its proximity to water as well as being built inside a mountain. Food? Yeah, that's undoubtedly an issue. They could build something like vertical farms inside; however, those are notorious for not being particularly green while also being expensive. There's a lot that can be seen already that simply can't be considered particularly green from the presumed construction itself, then operations add on yet another layer to that.
      I'd say it's within reason of possibility for them to build the structure, but... they are undoubtedly not going to fulfill all of the promises they've been making, especially with being "green"

    • @chrisblake4198
      @chrisblake4198 4 місяці тому +26

      @@gaerekxenos I'm talking about NEOM the city, not this Aquaforce hotel complex inside the mountain. The city claims to be kilometers long running from the sea inland on what is essentially desert foothills. No matter what, they're building on the equator, it's going to suffer from most of the same problems you see in other big construction projects in SA and UAE.
      One thing they never mention is labor. Their record on workplace comfort and safety isn't great, even when they're building in established cities. Imagine what it will be like shipping tens of thousands of workers into the middle of nowhere for years. No matter what they do to make the final product 'green', nothing they've shown so far indicates they'll be able to build it without massive pollution and environmental disruption.

    • @gaerekxenos
      @gaerekxenos 4 місяці тому +1

      @chrisblake4198 Oh, NEOM is the linear city name? My bad. That design makes a bit more sense with what they claim with environmental friendliness. There are ways to reduce the necessary cooling through exterior materials and insulation, but that ends up with issues of natural light instead. The issues I've been hearing about the linear city is movement. There are ways and methods for that as well, but I guess I'd have to take a look at the designs before deciding how much of a trainwreck that is. Power from renewable sources also makes more sense here considering proximity to resources, but idk how much that really is and how much that'll provide. Desalinization I'm not sure about, seems like a bit of a mess to sort out. They can't be thinking of it as the only source of water, can they? =_=;; vertical farming would resolve the space issue, but then there's water issues instead and maybe energy problems
      I guess they can have fun with those problems if they do manage to finish building

      That's because they hire artists to render this shit, instead of actual architects and city planners.
      There is not a single architect involved anywhere in this scam of a "project".
      In one of the renders you see elevated walkways over other elevated walkways, all of which are made of solid concrete, and not a single support beam anywhere in sight. How well do you think that would turn out in reality?
      Also, they claim to be "harmonious and at one with nature", and yet there isn't a single garden bed to be seen. No dirt of any kind ANYWHERE. Just a bunch of random greenery thrown haphazardly around the scene.
      And this quartyard area that Amanda is saying is a "third space" (which is a stupid marketing term for a hang out spot.) Seems to literally just be a big open concrete slab with a bunch of people loitering in it. What is there supposed to be to do in this "third space?" What is drawing people to hang out here? They make tons of claims in the text, but couldn't be bothered to render any of it. What does that tell you? They clearly haven't thought that far ahead.

    I’m in the architecture field and it’s less often that things can’t be built in more sustainable ways, it’s that the people paying for it don’t want to spend the extra money to do it. I can only really talk about it from a North American Perspective, and my training is specifically in Canada but unless we see a massive shift in legislature and grants not just lining the pockets of developers looking to make the biggest buck we will not see the large scale infrastructure changes that can and really do need to happen.
    An example a lot of people are used to is Green Roofs. Soil is heavy, Water is heavy, and now you want to fully incorporate that on a structure that typically tries to shed water and has not taken that extra weight into consideration for its structure. You cannot simply slap a green roof onto an existing building without structural adaptations or without severely limiting the size and output of that kind of green system. Designing a building with a green roof incorporated is an extra expense that many see as extraneous and is often one of the first things to be cut when construction goes over budget, and it almost always goes over budget. It takes not only a visionary but someone with money and drive to see these changes manifest and so far our most vocal billionaires are more concerned with social media platforms and space😒 There’s a lot of people with some great ideas, and some are managing to manifest them on a small scale but I wish we’d see less bullshit cities of the future pipe dreams that will only benefit the 1% and more smaller but large scale changes that will make a difference for more.

    • @gaerekxenos
      @gaerekxenos 4 місяці тому +8

      Canada... or rather polar climates make those 'green roofs' even more of a hassle/burden. Snow? Yeah. That's a thing. It's one thing if green roof is implemented somewhere like Southern California and closer to sea level since water can still be dealt with by having drainage systems so it can run off. Snow would require a whole 'nother thing that is a mess and a half
      Good thing NEOM isn't actually near the poles, and presumably not built into a high altitude mountain where it gets snow. But I can't imagine this project being green even if they added all sorts of vegetation to the construction. They're digging out a mountain, right...? That's almost inherently not green with how much fuel is going into the machines to do all the excavating. Alternatively... they build the mountain up as an enclosure, but that raises a question on structural stability for the slopes and is another headache and a half on top of how much longer it'd take

    Walkable/bike friendly cities, community minded activities, mandatory home economics classes in schools to teach life skill (ie sewing, cooking, basic home owner/car maintenance skills), decreasing over all human greed,( this includes fast fashion shopping, tossing everything once we are over it ect.) That’s gonna do a lot more for our earth then some fancy tech cities.
    Also let’s be so for real some heritage buildings, bridges, and roads are nothing more then an earthquake hazards. It’s okay to want to show our history but when a bridge is literally so unstable that they have to block it off because it can sustain itself it’s time to make a new one. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but if it is broke do fix it.

    • @GeneralNickles
      @GeneralNickles 4 місяці тому

      1. "Walkable" and "bike friendly" cities solves absolutely nothing. That is a completely pointless endeavor.
      2. What the hell are these "community minded activities"? And what the hell do they allegedly solve?
      3. I agree that basic life skills course should be mandatory, but that wouldn't really solve anything either, because so few people can be bothered to actually do any of that stuff. I know full well how to change my own oil, but I still go to a shop to do it for me, because I care less about the money than I do about the time and effort I would need to dedicate to doing it myself. 90% of people feel the same way about a lot of skills. That's why they aren't taught in schools anymore. Because no one cares.
      4. Not sure what fast fashion has to do with greed. Fast fashion isn't greed. It's vanity. The entire luxury industry isn't about greed. It's about vanity. Greed would be refusing to pay workers a decent wage while giving yourself millions in bonuses. Not buying your fifteenth Gucci bag because you got bored with the last fourteen. That's just pure vanity.

      @@strawberrycola39 the housing crisis would be solved almost entirely by enacting legislation to limit the number of properties any one entity can own, with careful attention to avoid loopholes that allow for shell companies to buy up everything anyway.
      Other than that, society is kinda fucked, and really nothing can be done about it. The poverty problem, the healthcare problem, and all the other big issues quite literally can't be fixed. If they could, then it would've been done by now. A LOT of incredibly smart people have dedicated there lives to fixing these problems, and it's amounted to literally nothing. There's really only one conclusion that can be drawn there.
      The environmental crisis is too far gone to be fixed. If humans just blinked out of existence right now, then climate change would still happen, and it wouldn't be notably different than it would be with us still here. It's just too late to do anything about it. That is, unless we learn a way to reverse terraform earth to force climate change to go in the other direction (like when Neil degrasse Tyson said "if we could turn mars into earth, then we can turn earth back into earth"), but then we have the same problem in the other direction. Global temps getting too cold.
      Sure, being less wasteful is a good thing. We should strive to be the best we can, but to think that it's actually going to make a difference on a grand scale is naive at best.

    Aquellum is just another major city being built by Saudi Arabia, but with a lot less of an eSports focus.
    Neom is intended as being the home to eSports professionals, having teams relocate so there's less international strength, as everyone is then a part of Saudi Arabia. Players may be put at risk as there have been no changes in laws to legalize homosexuality. I do recommend [eSports] investigative reporter Richard Lewis on more information for these topics if you're curious. It's a rabbit hole.

    What worries me with how tourist-heavy these ideas are is, the things that make a place nice to visit- restaurants, museums, markets, shops, hotels, tours, everything- requires a large number of permanent residents to actually work and keep the city functioning. You can’t have a city of just tourists. Where are the locals going to live? Eat? Socialize? Are they going to be in the same fancy villas and courtyards and have boats at the marina or is that only for the rich fancy tourists? It feels like they’re either being forgotten or there’s going to be two cities in one, a fancy one for the tourists and the cheap bare bones for the people who work at the restaurants and hotels but can’t afford to actually be a part of this ultra-luxurious city.

    I have no expectations for this. Just seems like a resort for the ultra rich and *only* the ultra rich.

    This feels like a giant viral marketing campaign for some kind of movie, tv show, theme park or whatever. It gives off those vibes to me anyway.

    Tried to Google Earth it but it won't zoom or let me street view enough to see a sense of what is built. Aw.

    This city is way more like an art project than something realistic.
    Like, common... No advertising billboards, neon lights, or Mcdonalds and shit?

    Is the audio super tinny and sharp for anyone else? I haven't noticed other vids having a problem, but given the number of times I drop my earbud within a day, im pretty sure I've messed them up.

    “Making seawater drinkable” Desalination? Thats desalination. Isn’t that super inefficient? And ultimately bad for the environment??

      Yep! But it sounds cool and futuristic, so they don't care, probably.
