Hi professional trophy maker here: NO, belts are not cheaper than trophies. Trophies you can get a 3 tiered for like $20-$100 depending on how tall & boujee you go. BELTS, unless they came off of amazon and they just slapped a sticker on it, those are around $200 to like $500 if not more.

Then the main benefit of a belt is ease of storage, right? Even a big, gaudy wrestling belt can be folded flat and stored a lot easier than a bulky trophy. Also less likely to get snapped in half by an excitable dog's momentary lapse in judgment

fun fact: The "Florida Man" stereotype is actually born from a unique quirk of Florida's legal system, the Sunshine Laws! The sunshine laws are transparency statutes that make most government records extremely easy to access. Because of that, reporters have a tendency to pull detailed arrest records and turn them into news stories, which then get spread on the internet. People actually commit bonkers crimes all over the country, it's just perceived as a "Florida" thing because we're the only state that has that level of transparency.
This seems like a fun event and lmfao of course it was held in St. Augustine. Of course. I hope you got a chance to check out the city while you were there, I love that place.

PA has sunshine laws as well (as in at least local government meetings are open to public and right to know covers a lot of records), but somehow we don't get nearly as much bonkers coverage O_O I think maybe the creativity and banana factor is just specific to florida that makes for better stories.

Honestly you look so amazing in this lighting. $49 is pretty exspensive for just entry and nothing else like a shirt or food ticket included. That said, I would certainly go in the future.
I live it Texas. State fair prices are $25/adult, $18/kid on weekend + $20/parking space at the location. So there price for there first time with a planned low turnout seams reasonable. Granted, i don't go to the state fair as i don't have the $$ usually, just saying its reasonable in relation to other fairs. (those are the 2023 prices via Texas state fair website)

This gives me high school carnival days in like the best way possible. I don’t know if this was just a my school thing but we’d do a fundraiser once a year with like kind of janky attractions, obstacle courses and contests but also like a dunk tank and stuff and then you’d buy tickets to do events to raise the money. This gives of similar vibes but cranked up a few notches and it actually seems like it’d be a fun event.

I used to live in st Augustine and events at that field are always laid out weird. Even big major events will have odd open spots then all the food smashed into one corner away from everything else.
It feels like the field is just bigger than folks expect when they are drawing it out on paper vs when you start setting up tents.

My friends and I go to weird event every May in Pottstown, PA called the Bock Fest & Goat Races. Sly Fox Brewery names their Bock beer after the winning goat. There's usually about 4k people in a field next to the brewery. I honestly think the longest line is for the face painting, because it is a family event. 😁
You can tell a Florida man was responsible for setting up the Florida man games.
Organizers need to talk to the folk who organize Highland Games or Lumberjack games and other field events like that.

apparently the reason why "Florida Man" memes exist is bc Florida has a law that states that police charges are a matter of public record and thus there is free access by the press to any of the crazy shit that happens. a lot of this madness happens EVERYWHERE, but this one Florida law has such a huge impact on our understanding of the state

Since St Augustine was Florida's first city (and the first European settlement in the Continental US) having the first Florida Man games at the birthplace of Florida makes total sense. Also St Augustine is next door to Jacksonville (which is one of the largest metro areas in the state), so it is a good location.

I've always wanted to travel more, but even though I could probably make it work financially, I'm just so nervous about actually springing for it. Even though I'm a solo kind of person, the idea of traveling alone is nerve wracking at worst and boring at best. Maybe I should start small. Find some place fairly local, stay there for a night and then see how I feel about it...
I think we need to make a bronze gator head trophy with no teeth and each year a new copper tooth is put in by the wining team who keep the head in a place of honor until the next games where it is transferred to the next winner ala Stanley Cup

I know its too late to help now, but for you and other's future reference vinegar can prevent a sunburn from worsening. Just climb in the shower, wipe it onto affected areas or if it's a big chunk of your body pour it over your head, wait a minute then rinse. *IT WILL LIKELY STING*, but it prevents blistering and helps start the healing process. speaking as someone very prone to sunburns even with the use of 100 spf everywhere.
