      It does help at least under the hood that there isn't a different motor for every single different model. They may do some minor changes but for the most part a motor will be stretched about as far across a line (and even across brands) as they can manage.

    I know you didn't "have" to clean the intake runners and valve stems but I for one would be greatly, greatly appreciative of that as a customer. It's a costly service if done alone so it's a real nice thing to do for your customer while you're in there.

      If I take a customer engine apart, every single part gets cleaned as close to new as possible. I hate when I see mechanics put dirty stuff back in.

      @@85jmccoy And yes I understand electric just any fyi because I guess that's important to understand pushrods? I just pulled my own permits to rewire a house I bought in Louisiana. 200 amp meter socket and just a basic 125 amp panel due to no central air or heat.

      Considering how clean the valvetrain looks that engine does look to be fairly well maintained. It may leak oil, but they definitely also change it regularly.

      That’s exactly what I got on here to say. Remember the 2.8 engine. That motor is basically based off of? Them o rings would have you thinking the rear main seal was leaking!!

    Yes people will try to tell you that the brake cleaner is not a good idea but in fact it is a very good idea because brake cleaner will not damage anything and it'll also dry very quickly as opposed to carburetor cleaner or intake cleaner spray, so good choice on your part Mr Ray

    Want some new spark plugs? No problem! All you gotta do is start by removing the dashboard, the driver's seat, radiator, master cylinder, front left strut assembly, intake and exhaust manifolds, airbox, alternator, then drop the fuel tank a few inches and disconnect the transmission from the torque converter, and that should give you access to distributor just after removing the water pump. Piece o' cake!

      Most of the time you only need to pull the radiator cap off and replace the automobile.

    You should change the O ring on the oil pump drive, the oil is under pressure there and is where 1/2 the oil was likely leaking from, lot easier now and the o ring should be in the gasket set. For those who don't know it's the round thing with the bolt under the special tool at 25:13

      That is where the distributor in the older motors used to be, GM has been using this block forever.

      Although they are common place for oil leaks, the o-ring can simply be replaced at any time with approximately 5-10 mins in labor since it is readily accessible.

    Fixed an ex's car with the same engine just about got it done when her new boyfriend showed up to finish it and take all the credit. Didn't tell him it needed a new radiator, the old one was split thus why it overheated in the first place. He ended up frying the engine by running it out of coolant and driving it ten miles because he was an expert.

    I like using a shoe box for things I need in order. Its a home shop trick but it may be nice for an extended time job. Poke stuff through the top, you can make notes/numbers on the box and some bigger parts can go inside. Worked wonders on a Nissan timing chain job I helped with and nothing blew up!

      Yes, I also will take a piece of cardboard from a cut up box and trace out the part like the Intake Manifold and then poke the bolts thru in their respective slots.

      Ah yes... interference engines...
      Step 1: Underestimate the time of how long it takes.
      Step 2: Find out you need specialized tools for locking the timing in place. Get the specialized tools.
      Step 3: Swear like a heathen as you remove more and more stuff just to get to the side of the engine you need, wonder why would anybody consider this anything than an engine out of the vehicle job...
      Step 4: Cut your self on an oil covered corner. Swearing and first aid optional.
      Step 5: Put the locking mechanism in place, read the instruction 10 times because they make little sense or they don't correspond to the tool precisely.
      Step 6: Replace the chain and anything else that's within reach because you're sure as hell not going back in.
      Step 7: Hope that you put enough but not too much Engine sealant on the side panel so it won't leak, but won't break off inside.
      Step 8: Have a small panic attack when you get overwhelmed by all the wires, screws and parts that need to go back. You're almost sure you'll do something wrong.
      Step 9: Put other things back on, while hoping you're doing it right. Re-read your notes at least thrice for the maximum effect. Put the oil in, remember that you forgot the filter when you're already one quart in. Replace filter. Put more oil in.
      Step 10: Have a larger panic attack when the thing doesn't crank or light up.
      Step 11: Reconnect the battery terminals.
      Step 12: Pray as you put in the ignition key.
      Step 13: Celebrate as nothing is clanking and the engine is running. It ended up as a 3 day job as opposed to one day job.
      Step 14: Obsess over the next 4 weeks and check every other day if there's nothing leaking. Swear it's not worth saving the money and leave it to a mechanic next time.
      Personal experience may vary.

      First aid is always optional, the other part isn’t. It’s always the first thing that happens because you need to let off some of the pressure that’s building up inside you! You wouldn’t want to bleed to death because of too much pressure!🤬

When I get frustrated enough I just stare at it for a minute or two and let the feeling simmer and boil until I've calmed down... that or I throw stuff... not the expensive stuff, or near expensive stuff... I learned not to do that after a 10mm wrench and a wind-shield had somehow became intertwined due to the elusive workings of gravity. I was aiming at the tree but the wrench bounced off...

    While in there you should put a new o-ring on the distributor hole plug. They are a known source for leakage.

    I heard the mosquito comment. Some years ago I stopped near dusk to help a fellow who had a 57 Chevy at the side of the road with the hood up.
    Original survivor car - straight 6. Dude took the carb apart with a crescent wrench and flat screwdriver ... to find a MOSQUITO blocking one of the tubes!
    Reassembled everything and it fired right back up!
    (Remember, this is in northern Canada where mosquitoes are considered BIRDS, not insects).

    Great video Ray, all vehicle owner should watch this, a great example of a job that grows! What started as an electrical problem ended up with a large mechanical task with the addition of entertaining narrative and self correcting gramme!!! Best you have made.

      Alternatively: What started as a small "mechanical" (leak in valve cover gasket) then spread and most likely caused the starter problem. Could have been the oil leak problem was caused by some mild overheating (baking all the gaskets and silicone solid so it loses resiliency) or just age. Same thing with the battery terminals... could have been overtightened a few too many times or too many agressive cleanings so they could no longer clamp on tight to a post. But yeah... not hard to find $$$ to $$$$$s of work on most any 15 year old car.

    That was more work than I expected to replace the various gaskets. Great work on the disassembly & clean up Ray. I am looking forward to the assembly video. My current vehicle is my first V6. I have owned a Rotary, heaps of in-line 4 cylinders and one straight 6, the straight 6 was my longest ownership of a vehicle, 20 years. You can do that with a 6 cylinder old school diesel.

      Just don't ask for a particular mechanic, shop owners hate that, and you may end up with a trainee or oil change guy working on your vehicle, ask me how I know. Dealerships were good for that. If you were a smaller independent shop with only 2 guys/gals, it was okay.

    25:11 Probably too late now, but you may want to replace the o-ring on the oil pump drive shaft at the back of the block. They are notorious for failing. The 2.8 and 3.1 engines have the same design.

      One of those 50 cent parts that takes a fortune to replace. I repaired an oil leak on a 706 Farmall that had an oil leak on a plate that had a fitting jerry rigged buy brazing a pipe angle on it. The problem was they melted a dollar and a half o-ring and it took about forty bucks to get to the o-ring. Totally crazy and it was a certified Case-IH mechanic that did the work.

    I use to own a 2005 Equinox with the V6. It was the wife’s car. I say use to own till the brother in law totaled it. Anyway it developed a blown head gasket. I do my own work so watching this video reminds of that job. Later I replaced the radiator A/C compressor and condenser and dryer. I also replaced the brake pads and rotors. It always blows my mind how huge of plastic parts you end up with doing this stuff.

    That round plug on the right of our screen near the bellhousing probably has an o-ring begging to be replaced. I have replaced many similar ones on 2.8 and 3.1 engines. Now would be the perfect time to do it.

    They have a tool to lift the rockers on these, If you can not disturb the rocker bolts on these your are better off. They have a tendency to rip the threads out of the bolt hole a few thousand miles after a re-torque and then you have to go back in, drill it and put a threadsert in. They sound just like a rod hammering when the bolt pulls out.

    Be careful when torquing the rocker arms back down. They like to pull the threads out of the head if over torqued. Had a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero with the 3.4 that popped a rocker off after the lower and upper intake gaskets were replaced. Ended up saving it with a TImesert kit and not having to pull the head.

    Keeping the pushrods in order may not be needed, but it just shows a level of professionalism. I remember doing head gaskets on a 3.3L '96 Intrepid and had a Dr Pepper 12 pack box with holes poked in it to keep all the head and intake bolts, pushrods, and whatnot in order and labeled to where they go. If I was smart I'd have used a diet soda box because they are typically silver or white and easier to write on and see what I wrote.

      This is not a direct injection engine, I own one of these. That's why the valves were not that dirty to begin with.

    Good job. That engine looked pretty clean inside for its age and mileage. The owner must have been keeping up on oil changes. Or perhaps it's just leaked so long that it's had a perpetual oil change..

      I suspect the same. tbh, its not too bad to just have a 20 buck jug of oil in your car vs a blown up engine or a costly repair(i would do this assuming i cannot do the repair myself or if i didnt have money readily available) as long as the end goal is to get it fixed

    Did this job myself a year ago. Didn't unscrew the rockers as I manufactured a tool to lift them and pull the lifters out (mine is older, without vvt, so all lifters are the same length).
    Took me a day, including tool manufacturing.

    RAY I don't Loosen the rockers . If you put the cam at the low point .
    You will have enough room to take the push rod out . Its easier that
    that way :-))

    Ok, for all of you guys interested in those ratching crows feet wrench’s, Ray just brought up looking on eBay for them. There’s a set of used snap on (blue point) for $139.50 right now with a buy it now price of $150.00 plus shipping. I looked them up awhile ago and I’m pretty sure they were around $320.00 brand new. These are used but with a good discount. I’m a home gamer so probably a little out of my price range. I’d still like a set though. Only one set, you better move quick!

      I find that interesting, as a non mechanic but someone who likes doing his own mechanical work where possible I've owned & worked on E32, E34, E36 and E39, doing stuff like full suspension bushing changes, full brake renewals, full interior changes & various cam sensors & full services etc, I find them easy to work on, this is in the UK so RHD cars, and of course my works are optional as opposed to having to earn my living doing them so maybe that accounts for the differences in "likeability". Edited to add, All older cars obviously so maybe that also makes things easier.

    Ray, FYI . The only thing you neglected is that the oil pump drive ( located in the valley) has a O-ring that is a high oil leakage problem on this engine and not easily accessible unless you have the intake off. Just information for you from a 35 year in a GM tech (retired)

    I know how it feels to have low blood sugar. I've had problems with mine ever since i graduated high school. There are times when it's just fine then next minute it's either to high or to low

      @@MrMerzinho in fact I do. Not having medical insurance makes one conservative about consultation doctors, in haste. Most diseases that befall people will sort themselves out of you just carry on. With a positive attitude.
      That and the attitude doctors presented to me when I consulted them have led me to conclude that they are mostly unnecessary in the big picture.

    You should always replace the seals on the oil pump drive whenever you have the intake manifold off. They frequently leak!

      Yea I used to always suggest them when I worked at Napa, literally a 5 dollar part while ur in there to prevent something that will leak eventually.

    There is nothing like having to disassemble half of the engine just to fix leaky valve cover gaskets 🤨

      Not just valve cover gaskets, he's replacing both lower and upper intake gaskets as well which are a notorious issue with these GM V6's, he saving the customer cash since he's gonna be in there anyway.

    I had an 06 Buick that had a 3.6 valve covers gaskets and intake gaskets but it found other places for oil to leak.

    Took apart my 4 banger Nissan years ago to replace a leaky valve cover. I didn't know what I was doing. But I had bought the shop manual years earlier, didn't want to let it go to waste. The car ran for another four years without a leak.

    Regular combination plyers tips straight onto a 3 prong hose clamp works great and don't slip off.

    I always do the oil pump drive O-ring while I'm in these balls deep.
    They make a tool to lift the rockers and remove the pushrods without loosening the hold down bolts, at least for the earlier versions of these motors. :)
    Everyone hates BMW's, even their owners.

    Being a former auto mechanic myself I found out it's better to stay away from fix oil leaks on an engine that has all kinds of oil leaks on it without checking the crankcase ventilation because if the engine has massive Blow by that will cause massive oil leaks they will just leak again

    I haven't done anything more than change a air filter in several years. But you don't know how hard it is for me to resist going out and buying some tools. Oh yeah I did change some headlight bulbs and wiper blades. That felt so good. Lol

    It's not only a GM thing.
    Mercedes has been plagued with that phenomenon for several years.
    A huge problem in general, if you find not only the wiring harmed, but also connectors full of oil.

      I've noticed it most frequently on engines that have an exhaust manifold behind the rad. I'm in a heavy salt area so that helps, but I personally think the combined heat of rad and manifold just cooks that stuff until it crumbles even without a leak. Any looms in the back always seem to be in better shape.

    Note: Many auto makers will use a water jacket crossover through the intake manifold as a way to help heat up the intake to operating temp faster.

      The intake crossovers are there to cool the manifold, as it does with the rest of the engine.

    I traded my 2007 Pontiac g6 convertible with the 3.5 . Mine was very reliable and had nice power . I kick myself for ever getting rid of it , I should have kept it and just used it on the weekends . I see the new owner using it as a daily driver

    For me, standard pliers work best for the 3 prong clamps if you have a straight vertical shot at it

    Hi Ray, I enjoy your videos and have already learned a lot. Thanks for sharing! They make a cheap valve spring compressor tool for this job so you don't have to mess with the rocker arm bolts. I think mine was $10 or $12.
    Good idea to replace the lower intake manifold gaskets as soon as possible as the factory ones are junk. I have had a few friends vehicles with these engines catch on fire.

    I have had a few of those distributor adapter o rings leak. You do a great job. Keep the videos coming. After 47 years I still enjoy occasionally getting my hands dirty.

    GravityLight was a gravity-powered lamp manufactured until 2019. It was designed by the company Deciwatt for use in developing or third-world nations, as a replacement for kerosene lamps. It uses a bag filled with rocks or earth, attached to a cord, which slowly descends similar to the weight drive in a cuckoo clock.

    Cool video. I have an old G6 with this engine, although I’ve never had to open it up like this.
    There’s some pretty neat geometry going on inside there, the giant nearly coffin-shaped intake ports are pretty neat..
    The rockers and pushrods have some pretty severe angles going on, reminds me of the splayed valves on old Chevy big blocks, taken to the next degree.
    I can’t complain about mine, it’s a very smooth engine that makes great power for its size. Fuel efficiency isn’t that great, but it’s a compromise I’ll easily take for it lacking variable valve timing, direct injection, and all that other crap that all but guarantees catastrophic failure.
    Nothing more solid than an old pushrod engine, it’s the pinnacle of the KISS rule. 👍🏿

    Hi Ray! I had the pleasure of doing the same job on my 99 Oldsmobile Silhouette with the 3.4, I found that LISLE sells a push rod removal tool (PN: 483000 for $12.00) for this series engine. You did a great job on this engine! You mentioned low blood sugar, in my younger years I had the same problem. At the current age of 65 I have full blown diabetes, no more feeling in my fingers or feet, it's EXTREMELY frustrating working on cars with "dead" fingers. Keep an close eye on your glucose level and what you eat!

    Great content, even for us amateurs. Most people don’t even understand what brake parts cleaner can do for clean up. It has multiple applications, but, as you’ve stated many times, don’t spray in the throttle body. MAF Sensor cleaner is all I’ve ever used there and I always give it time to completely dry. If I had access to a lift, would probably still do my own work. Age does become a factor at some point, stooping and bending is for younger people. If it’s not already out there, I look forward to the completion of this job.👍🏻👍🏻

    I've owned on for the last 10 yrs and never any real problems except for gasket leakage... And the 3.5 l runs awesome, I'd definitely own another...

      They're tough engines, but always leak. GM never figured out how to seal the 60° v6

      @@robertrobbins5456 mine had a massive front seal leak at 60k, I replaced it then it leaked again by 100k. The front head gasket leaked coolant at ~125k which I ignored and just kept adding coolant. Finally sold it at 150k. Still ran great.

    Good job on the repair!! There is a tool to slip the push rods out without removing the rockers BTW it makes doing that job much nicer.
