I'm also in the midwest and with the recent warm temps thawing the snow, this is the first year ever that I've actually gotten huge amounts of vole tunnels. Never had a single one and now it looks like there's some kind of river valley going through the front lawn. I used to set multiple bait traps but it seemed like they were never going for the stuff, and now this happens. 😖

Usually it doesn't cause long term damage but I've definitely had issues in the past as well

I get vole holes around my shed and mulch landscaping. I use snap traps(enclosed so my dogs and kids won't get hurt). I bait them with creamy peanut butter with peanuts jammed in the peanut butter. I have to empty them daily. FYI I've tried crunchy peanut butter and they didn't touch it. Creamy pb with whole peanuts jammed in was the ticket for me.

@@YankMyRodFishing I may try peanut butter as well. I was previously using bromadiolone bait blocks like Contrac Blox and they didn't appear to get much traffic so I just stopped. Maybe I'll cover the blocks in a bit of peanut butter too. 😄

I get ridiculous vole activity every single year. Nothing this year though as we've had minimal snow in MN. No matter how bad it may look, it will recover. The key is to allow it to completely dry out and rake it to get dead material out. This gets sun to the soil. As far as trapping, you simply have to find the active runways. Once snow melts, most of those runways are not active anymore, so you won't catch anything. You'll have to find where they are coming from like a shed, garden bed, etc and find the active runway. Set snap traps perpendicular to the runway, make sure it sits flat. No bait is needed. If it's active, you'll see a vole in it in the morning, guaranteed.

I'm near Minneapolis, we have NO snow on the ground right now. It's wild. It's 40 today. We had a drought last year and unless we get dumped on this spring, it's going to be another really hard year. The bugs are going to suck. Especially ticks.

Being located in NC, we have up and down temps. For the most part, we have mild winters. Last week, it was 35-40 and today it was 75. In years past, it has gotten as low as 3 degrees at night with highs in the high teens and 20's and all be it RARE, with 10+inches of snow on the ground for weeks. In all honesty, we really didn't see any difference in insect saturation one way or the other, whether it be tics, mosquitoes, grubs or fireants. Don't even get me started on fireants. I've burned them, froze them and even tried to drown them. They still survived. I DO NOT mean to be contrary, but at least in the south, cold temps don't affect insect population....AT ALL.

Once things are dried out a light raking should help get airflow going and it should come back once temps are optimal for growth again

The skunks have capitalized on the mild winter conditions, wreaking havoc on lawns as they feast on grubs.

I’m going to try to prevent root pests this season with compost teas. In potted plants you can increase the biological diversity so much that the soil microbes will literally eat some larvae like fungus gnats and other similar pests. I’m hoping to turn some of those grubs and their eggs to be a good source for the soil

I live in the pacific northwest near seattle south of seattle. My ground is saturated with water and probably will be until after April. Does this mean I will not have grub problems until after dries out?. We usually have fairly mild winters here..
Crane fly is something I watch out for here.

It's a good machine. I had hoped I could cut a little lower with it without scalping but since you still have front wheels, the lawn needs to be leveled to get the best out of it when wanting to go low. I'm just as happy with my Milwaukee and you can put a Lawn Stryper behind it for some extra stripes.

Everyone has a different walking speed so best case is measure out how many pounds you need for your area and then set it low enough that you're getting even flow but not too heavy and go over the area multiple times so it's even.
