Calling aluminium harsh is a lie that keeps getting perpetuated by UA-camrs who ride carbon the majority of the time. If you have a good aluminium frame there is little difference between aluminium and Carbon!
I completely agree, I had an 2019 S-Works Tarmac SL6 but replaced that one bike with a CAAD13 rim brake and a new frame-up Allez Sprint build and there's basically no difference in ride feel. Especially with modern tires w/ latex tubes or tubeless at low pressures. We are just talking race bikes here, which even in carbon are supposed to be stiff, so maybe there is a case for carbon for spongy endurance bikes

Have to disagree. I think it depends on the bike. I have 2 CAAD 12’s which I love (stiff and responsive) and will never sell but they are not as comfortable as the carbon Raileigh I have.
My Carrerra TDF from Halfords was exceptionally harsh. I loved it though. I loved upgrading it. I'd still be riding it if I was able to get the BB out.
@@pandatactical4530 I own a Caad12 and have to disagree. That bike is in no way harsh! The tyres you use, how wide and the pressures have a greater bearing on comfort than frame material.
Nice looking bike, but would be interesting to ride it and see what the comfort is like. Bikes are getting rather pricey these days, so good to see a high end bike that is half the price of said competitors
Those welds take me back to my 1997 giant tcr frame that was even lighter 😅😅
I purchased a bare frame and put on an entire Ultegra Di2 12 speed group set. The ride quality is superb,and better for long bumpy rides. My other bike is a Pinerallo Prince which I prefer for shorter high intensity rides.

I believe the CAAD13 frame weighs less than that this frame.

Very smart-looking bike. Agreed about the bung for the cable, odd placement. The seat post clamp area has a bit of a "dog's ankle" look to it, but I'm sure that's a strong design. Price is definitely attractive, would like to see the price with it spec'd with 12 speed ultegra. Thanks for the video David.

The polymers that hold carbon together,are affected by ultra violent light,top pro sprinters bikes are affected by there use,and are not as stiff after a season,probably wouldn't effect the average man on the street,just something to think about
Always good to have a new material out there, especially one that's "green". However, they really need to get rid of that ugly seat post clamp. It looks so cheap! Save the welds and use a standard external collar. I'm looking forward to seeing what their mk2 is like.
That's what I was thinking too. Why go to the trouble of extra welding when a traditional seat clamp would be easier and look cleaner.?
The little triangle holding the seat wedge doesnt look that great to be honest. I would have preferred a normal seat clamp system. And the white color doesnt do it any favours either.

What's it like for corrosion ? I've heard aluminium can be an issue where it is in contact with steel components. Is this the same?
I can guaratee that if you as much as whisper moist , beeing close to the bike ,it will start to corrode...!
All VAAST/Super Magnesium frames have a Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation surface treatment (both inside and outside of frame) creating a hard layer of corrosion protection.
annoying that these only have a thtru axle in the front, as i wanted to fit a Kindernay gear hub to it.
Do the welds look bad because Super Magnesium is difficult to weld? I don't remember the welds on the aluminum bikes, back in the day, looking so poor.
Aluminum bikes used to have welds that were just as ugly, and no one seemed to care. Today they look a lot better because they grind them down. Maybe Mg is touchy about grinding? I know it does weaken the joint.

1:25 you say it's Aero optimised. Other than flat handlebars I cannot name a single Aero feature on this bike. In fact the gaps between the down tube, seat tube and wheels look horrendously non aero
All the tube profiles have been aero shaped - if you look closely they aren't round tubes

Still bloody expensive, what is the purpose of this material really? Can get better lighter, cheaper alternatives. Magnesium frame then carbon other stuff. Oh and you missed wood and bamboo.

@caet49 I was racing crits on one of these. I disagree....it actually rides really well and handles great. It isn't my TCR or a super aero carbon frame, but for the price it does a great job.

You need to diferentiate between reach and wheelbase, the two don't have to go hand in hand and when you're talking about stability it's wheelbase that counts. Adding reach and calling it a positive is a bit misleading.

Maybe magnesium is the new super material, but I'm keeping the volume low so my Merlin doesn't hear this. :)

Caad 12 is lighter.
I don’t think I would spent this amount for a material that we know nothing about it’s reliability and longevity at this point.
But besides that I feel that American bike companies are the total opposite from their car industry.Full of innovation research and improvements

The Alley Sprint frame is about 1,511g, so quite a bit heavier. Caad13 is quite a bit lighter at 1,115g, so the Vaasa's 1250g is pretty good compared to those rivals
@@davidarthur not sure about the new ones but they were around 1k grams, smaller sizes sub 1k grams i think. its funny to me they would add 500 grams and charge more for it, but thats the bike industry we all know and love.
Can you name an example of a sub-1000g alloy frame?
@@davidarthur the old allez's like i said in my first comment. not sure about the new ones. aluminium is my least favorite material for a bike frames.

3:05 I really do not understand this comment. You mention you lose all feeling in the road surface with carbon frames? You (and every other big cycling channel/publication to be fair!) all you mention is riding tubless with big wide tyres thanks to disk brakes with low pressure to get rid of that road buzz feeling. You all say tubeless feels amazing you cannot feel the road makes every ride smooth no harsh road feeling. Now your using this feeling as a bad thing ? Does that mean all cycling journalists are wrong and should be back on 140 psi 23mm tyres ? Or is this a comment just to sell a new bike ? I just find it a really odd comment as it litteratly is the oppoisite of every tyre/frame review you have made in the last 3 years.
by the way have you tried to set fire to it ? I used to love burning magnisium strips at school best lesson is science.
My point was that as good as the latest carbon bikes and associated developments are at smoothing rough roads, that not everybody wants this level of being disconnected from the road surface and materials like magnesium and aluminium bring a bit more feedback into the experience which some prefer. And feedback doesn't always have to mean horrible vibrations but more of a connection to the road surface under the tyres

The bike looks nice. But i prefer good quality steel over anything else to be honest... Especially if you combine a steel frame with a carbon fork you get an amazing machine that you will enjoy for many years. Aluminum looks great and is kinda cheap but it looks way too temporary, Carbon is very expensive and i don't feel is very reliable, Titanium is extremely expensive but an amazing material. I don't know anything about magnesium, it looks identical to aluminum though... And i guess it is crazy expensive too. Cycling became way too expensive even for recreational use. I don't understand...
I'd suggest reading up on the history of the modern racing bicycle development from the 70s through the 80s and 90s, the most exciting period for material development, and then into the 00s, to get a better understanding and appreciation of how and why racing bikes have evolved
Magnesium is pretty cost effective. Way less expensive than titanium. Check out this brands bikes. They are very reasonably priced.

The welds look terrible. Unless you're at the top of your game there's no need to own a bike like this. Loose 2 lb.
Just buy a nice used bike save lots of money. This bike looks terrible and is probably made in a sweat shop in 🇨🇳
