Precise root work is what makes Dr. Nigel the best surgeon for developing some great root systems. Nice pot for this replanting. Spring will give this tree much success in growing.
Mulberries are tough! I have a couple of mame sized ones, and they are thriving. Your tree is going to give you years of fun! Thank you for another great video.
I love watching you do this work. You taught me how to care for the roots pretty good I think! Now, if only I could get the tops do be as nice! Hahaha! That planting looks great Nigel!
Great one! I recently repotted all my mulberry trees this week (5 of them) and their root growth was something else! It's amazing how quickly they put on growth in their roots, and overall! I got 3 flushes of growth last summer and some major ramification... awesome trees to have as bonsai!
I used to throw my nose up at mulberry bonsai. I even found a variegated mulberry seedling that I just thought not a mulberry.... Now I regret not digging that mulberry. I'm a big fan of keeping weed trees as bonsai. What makes them successful nuisance is also what makes them easy bonsai to keep!
I've been trying to get a native red mulberry to grow from cuttings for the past 2 years, but so far I've had no luck getting any to root. Of course, almost all the invasive white mulberry cuttings I took last summer rooted. They're from a female tree, so someday I look forward to having edible bonsai fruit. For a noxious weed, they're very tasty.
I have an inadvertent clump-style mulberry in my front garden flowerbed. It sits just below a really small red maple, but I'm gonna have a go at it tomorrow... it's blocking all my annuals, and my day lilies. Maybe I'll see how short I can keep it!
I love Mulberry trees - I have 3 im growing in pots until i can bonsai one day. Question I'm in Zone 7 west coast - how do we know they are ready to come out of the garage? Our weather is warming up but I know my state and we will have one or two frosts before April. Thanks for doing this video. I thought trees should be repotted in the fall not during dormancy? Can I repot my trees now then? Will it affect their growing season in Spring ?
Hi Nigel, I was wondering why you cut some of the "crowded" roots at around 15 or 16mins in. Isn't the "goal" to grow lots of roots on the same plane so that they start tapering the trunk? They also looked equal in size and still small enough to me. Just curious for the reason
I like to keep some space between the roots so they don't grow thicker and fuse into each other, that will eventually happen around the trunk, but I also like to keep the radial roots balanced, so the tree doesn't get stronger on one side. Keeping the roots thinned out will help keep the root base growing evenly in all directions!
Watching Nigel has been good for my mental health throughout the years. I'm grateful.
Agreed, such a legend
It's always nice when you can combine Bonsai with food. I hope it'll tunr in to a tree that's not only beautiful but also delicious!

This is edible bonsai for you. Soon mulberries in your hot morning oatmeal or cereal. Cool. Nice looking little tree. You are taking great care of it.
I hope this one fruits for you one day; I always love the joy that is evident when a pampered tree gives such a tangible (and tasty!) reward!
I hope so too!
Watching this is reminding me I need to repot my mulberry trees as well! I hope yours has a happy and healthy future! I know it will in your hands. 👍👍

Thanks Marysol!!
Es una maravilla verle trabajar los bonsáis, podar sus ramas y sus raíces con la sensibilidad de una caricia. Gracias maestro.
¡¡Muchas gracias, disfruto cultivando los árboles!!

Maybe try and root on the mother tree, let it make a rootball there first.
I have had some great results that way.
Beautiful mulberry bonsai. I have got one. Your subscriber
Thanks for the sub!

How do you feel about Akadama in soil mix for bonsai?
I think it's great as trees get into a refinement stage, but I definitely couldn't afford it!!!
