We just have to admit Lucy's enormous mental strength. Outside is very pretty, athletic woman. But inside - there is a tungsten core. Unyielding will. You're an inspiration, Lucy!
It was a small moment in the video, but when your physio asked, “Are you going to destroy that pool tomorrow?” and you replied, “Yes. And everyone in it,” I got chills. Sure, it might be nothing or just a small moment, but I just *love* seeing the mental fortitude the world’s best athletes have. It’s inspiring. I know it’s not an “everyone sucks but me” attitude but more of a confidence they have in themselves. Love seeing those little moments. Great video and I hope the injury is all healed up!
I remember watching the Kona broadcast and the announcers mentioning you had an issue with your achilles. That's insane that you were able to run that marathon on a tore calf! Hope you continue to heal up and cannot wait to see you race again whenever it makes sense for you!
Having dealt with calf strains this past summer and in 2015, I can tell you all that Lucy’s performance and pain threshold are both off the charts. Congratulations on an out of this world accomplishment!
Running a marathon is already tough enough, can’t even imagine what it is to run a sub3 hour marathon on a torn calf 😱🔥….. definitely a top class athlete, mentally and physically. Wishing you a fast recovery. 🙏🏾 #TeamLucy all the way
What a weapon! My favourite triathlete. It's a coincidence that my 7 year old daughter is also called Lucy but it makes me smile she shares the same name as this legend!
2024 Lucy is gonna crush everyone !! - Why ?? ... Wins IM Kona with a injured calf - - > Starts doing strenght workout now specific for calfs.... Can't wait to see the long term results 💪- Best of luck and wishing for a speedy recovery 🙂
Lived that moment Calf tear ten days before Kona 2022 at my age (61) shutting down was the only option, 2024 I’m ready to push again for that goal…. Stay safe out there 💪👍
I already thought you were tough as a rock by holding that pace in Kona...now knowing this is like I'm lacking of words to describe it hahaha I feel like I'm not allow to complain anymore...go on lucy!! 🐐🐐🐐
Lucy, kicking ass with a leg wound, well I'm happy that you got your win and that it seems like this wound will recover, that is good to hear. You seem to get hurt a lot but still won, which is very impressive. Happy recovery time.
Back in March I tore my Gastrocnemius Medial almost completely from the connecting tissue and that was b****y painful! I can‘t imagine running anywhere in a fraction of that pain, let alone an entire marathon. Your performance blows me away when your‘re healthy so this is just out of this world! Forget Iron Man, you‘re a woman of Steel!
I'm still confused about the different terms in English, e.g. the difference between tear and rupture, but just recently (two days ago) I sustained what I would call a rupture of a muscle fibre (I would also say gastrocnemius just like in your case) and I haven't been able to walk since then. I already sustained a pulled muscle (in the other calf) last year but this is/was different as I really can't put any pressure on the injured leg (without pain) as of now. Either way, bottom line, running a full marathon with a hurting calf AT THAT PACE sounds like an incredible feat of mental strength.
A true inspiration that the mind is also one muscle that must be trained to overcome adversity. Speedy recovery. You are doing your team proud. I could not imagine running in such pain but the reward is so much sweeter. Cheers
I´m also struggeling with a torn calf at the moment and i´m getting frustrated more and more. Your video helped me a lot to stay focussed on recovery, doing a lot of strenght work and not starting to early again with running! Thank you!
Amazing and you have like 👍 Thant you can recover and it is not damaged. Amazing I mean because i have the same problem in the calf after marathon in Berlin my calf was like yours. After that I was also in Kona and make it the most beautiful race in my life, unfortunately not with the time that I wanted, now I am also in the recovery. I hope I see you again in Kona on 2025 and also I can start and finish again this time with a better results. Good luck 🍀
Fingers crossed your recovery continues on point. I tore my right calf twice over the years and I now have a very inelastic area of scar tissue that is constantly playing up and getting minor tears. Definitely recommend being overcautious on recovery. The long term impact of living with it if it doesn't heal properly is pretty dismal. I'd go back and slap my younger self if I could, I definitely didn't take it seriously enough.
One thing is certain > Our health is our absolute greatest "asset" and the basis for almost everything in life. - Sending lots of health @ll ...from Berlin/Germany🙋♂️
had a similar issue which impacted my Marathon training, know what you have been going through. Looking towards seeing you soon racing again stronger than before.
I ran into Frank Shorter once he did a duathlon the whole race injured but he was old school he did not complain by the way he was the best runner ever to come from the states olympic champ
He may have been the best marathon runner. Personally I like Prefontaine. The interesting thing is you mention Shorter's Duathlons which he turned to after running. While he probably still had a faster 10k time than LCB even in his 40s, she would have done him on the bike. And you don't say what injury he had? Lucy had a grade 3 calf tear, lucky not to need surgery. What did Frank have?
Wish you full and fast recovery. I noticed you may developed on left heel haglund deformity. Wonder if you have heel pain from it. I got it on my both heels from extensive running last year while training for two IMs. The pain is still in left heel while running
My war story .... IM Austria 2016 ... incurred a displaced fracture on third metatarsal on km 5 of the marathon course (spectator stupidity). Was my A race ... stopping was not even a consideration ... F the pain and pushed on to a 3.14 marathon and Kona slot. You don't have to be a Pro to hang in and succeed. A lesson to all
I’m happy for you that you are recovering so well! Amazing how you did this mentally but also dangerous for your physical health. Don‘t do this at home guys 😂
I use to live in Seattle and a cat from new zeland or somewhere down there broke his neck and went to the iron man and the next year he was 11th in the world beating most of the pros I use to work concrete in the seventies everyday was like a Ironman plus the yelling and cursing farmers in Wisconsin in the seventies worked 16 hour days in pig manure kicked. By horses I knew one guy lost his wife house burnt down lost his land got kicked by a horse and 17 bones broke in his face then the town raised money for him you people these days cannot imagine how much tougher many old school people loggers exc were
Obviously an elite athlete, but what about to those who see her as inspiration and push beyond their limits and do themselves real harm? And don’t have a team of physios and can’t spend hours prehabbing and rehabbing. I believe a video like this can be irresponsible without the appropriate context. The algorithm brought me here. As a runner I know we all push beyond our limits and we all start running well before we’re cleared too. We’re stubborn, and to put out a video saying it’s worth it to ignore the warning signs just doesn’t translate to the majority of us who don’t have the background and resources of this runner.
You sir are why there is a saying "health and safety gone mad". You actually proposing elite athletes should prefix everything they do with "don't try this at home"? If I run 1 400 at Lucy torn calf marathon pace I wreck my hamstrings. Dude, get real. I'm not going to have her tell me not to do it. I'm an adult. Being an athlete shouldn't be labelled a dangerous activity to be controlled. Seriously.
ohh girl. new injury?.......I know must be so hard to slow down after the World Tittle but, I guess is very clear that your body is sending you signals. Stay healthy, be smart listen your inner voice!

Inspirational disciplined calf rehab, showing the troughs as well as the peaks

glad you are able to recovery back to 100%
You are an Ironman down to the core, and a true inspiration. Thank you for your contribution to the sport.

Well done Lucy and Team Charles Barclay - Fast recovery, you're on the ball! - Can't wait for KONA 2025.
Wishing your speedy recovery continues.

Thank you for this insight in your revovery. Very helpful as I tore my calf muscle in the past as well.
Totally worth it! Very impressive. That said, I hope you're 100% expeditiously!
Lucy's recovery team is the best in the business. It can be a bad injury but hopefully managed properly she can come back to defend 💪💪🤘🤘🤘
I´m also struggeling with a torn calf at the moment and i´m getting frustrated more and more. Your video helped me a lot to stay focussed on recovery, doing a lot of strenght work and not starting to early again with running! Thank you!
Glad it helped! You’ve got this 💪🏻
Sending prayers for your healing journey 😊
Great content Holly! And Lucy, so happy you’re already back to swim bike run!
Winning Kona on a torn calf is CRAZY #teamLCB
And the small matter of breaking the course record 😜
Amazing and you have like 👍 Thant you can recover and it is not damaged. Amazing I mean because i have the same problem in the calf after marathon in Berlin my calf was like yours. Can't wait! 🧜🏻♀️
Unreal levels of toughness and mental strength Lucy
I didn't you could get more impressive Lucy! I'm so glad your injury wasn't worse, but gosh.

Absolutely! Being very thorough with the recovery so that I can come back stronger 💪🏻🙌

All the best Lucy, become healthy again :)

Running a marathon with a teared calf and win the IM WC…. 🤯🎩👏

Am I right?? 😄

I’m happy for you that you are recovering so well! Amazing how you did this mentally but also dangerous for your physical health. Don‘t do this at home guys 😂
Can you please share your walk/run program for coming out of an injury?
Good luck with your recovery. Just curious, why have a full boxing ring in the gym?
SO! BAD! ASS!
How many weeks did you have to have off running after Kona? 9wks? Are u doing a walk/run return or using the lever? :)
At 2:40 she is pointing to the wrong location.
We want the intro back!
Noted 😆
Freaking tank!
Hard as…..👌

you re one tough .... but i wouldnt recommend this to anyone unless you re about to win kona
I attempted a marathon on a calf tear, pulled out halfway and still had problems 5 years later.
@@ironmantooltimethank you for sharing this, it’s a lesson for all.

At the end of the day we are all adults and need to take responsibility for our own health knowing our resources and limitations.
Go lucy!

This is the injury I sustained during the race in Kona which is now thankfully fully healed 🙌🏻
