Six years later...your video is still helping! It just saved the hubs and me lots of $$ as we were about to have replacement covers made for our “sap dappled” outdoor cushions. While the offending tree is gone (making way for a gorgeous flowering pear tree that was hidden behind and fighting for its life) the sap remained on our cushions. It’s been years, but now, not a trace of sap! THANK YOU!!! I’m going to share your helpful video 😊
Happy to hear it!
Me in 2019: why would I ever have hand sanitizer laying around at my house?
Me in 2020: I got you bro
Right , there’s no one on earth i think without hand sanitizer 😅
LOL, go research what was written a few yrs ago on hand sanitizer what it does to male ]fertility. Im NOPT joking, its something you DONT want to touch!
Thanks so much. 8 years later and still an amazing solution - lots of had sanitizer around with the lingering pandemic. Got the sap out of my pants from trimming my sister in law's trees. I am sure your boys are almost in college now. Best wishes.
I'm the grown woman still climbing trees in dresses, I have so much hand sanitizer in the car, none in the house, used rubbing alcohol as I watched the video, can't believe how well it worked on a dress that I haven't worn in six months I thought it was ruined after I washed it and set the sap into the fabric, but it's gone now. Thank you!
You’re a genius. It totally worked.
Of all the videos in youtube on how to remove glue or sap, your advice is the only one that worked.
You saved my nike leggings that is about to be dumped in the trash after I sat down on a log on a very hot day.
Thanks so much 😊
Thank you! I thought my daughter had ruined her brand new dress. It even went through the dryer before I noticed the sap. Hand sanitizer took it all out!
The other day, I was in my garden trimming my star jasmine which has a lot of white sap that just drips out when you cut it. I had my gloves on and was very careful but still got some on my black cardigan. Washed it using a stain remover but the marks remained. Watched your video on UA-cam and as you say and demonstrate, the marks disappear using hand sanitizer... I would never have thought of that!
Thank you so much for putting this tip online for others to use.....soooo helpful :--)
Legend say the man still goes with his big boys on trips and gets tree sap on his pants 😁 Great video, 9 yrs later and going strong.
Wow, the hand sanitizer does do a nice job with removing the tree sap!
Thank you for the video! Your boys are lucky to have you for their very cool dad!
This method was awesome! Took me just seconds of easy scrubbing to get the pitch out of my nice hiking pants. I always carry hand sanitizer with me when I hike or camp just in case I need a quick cleaning of my hands, but now I’ll always make sure I have it with me for when I get pitch on my clothing. An even better reason to have it!
Thanks for the video!
9 YEARS LATER.... your video is STILL helping!! Going to get hand sanitizer after work!
I want to personally thank you for posting this video. I had tried my typical methods of cleaning and it just wasn't working. This looks way simpler! Thank you so much.
I'm blown away. Hats off, man. I would have never come up with that idea. You, sir, have saved my 300$ combat pants with that little trick. I really can't thank you enough.
OMG! thank you so much! I was sure my pants were ruined! It worked in seconds and now it’s like nothing ever happened! You sir are a lifesaver! 😄
Thank you very much. I did the same thing and didn't know how to remove the sap from jeans I wore in Yellowstone, I sat down at a picnic table. I washed them and it didn't come out. I thought my favorite jeans were ruined. I set them aside for a couple of months trying to make time to Google how to remove sap from clothes. Your video saved my jeans! Lol 😂 thanks again!
I thought he was going to shoot it off when I saw the intro
😂 stop
Holy Cow!!!!!! This really does work amazing. My hubby had tree sap on his shorts and I washed them a couple of times and it did not come out until I saw this video figured after washing it would not work. So I tried it and it worked amazing!!!
hand sanitizer, put on and rub it off.. boom saved 5 mins
Wow. I scrubbed and scrubbed to no avail and decided to look up ways to remove sap. Like magic!! Thank you so very much.
Oh thank you so much for this wonderful solution. My husband is a forester and gets some tough things from the woods!
Thank you! I decided to hike in an expensive jacket and got sap on it. I followed your video and i'm so happy! Thank you again!
Nice editing Scout! Thanks for sending over some subscribers, we are officially over 1000! Thanks again
Sweet!
Thank you for your video!!! I sat down on fairly new railroad tie that surrounds one of my gardens and did not realize that I sat on a patch the sap in the wood. Your video saved my brand new pair of blue jeans! I am most grateful for you wise advise in your video!
With much gratitude, Sheila :-)
It worked!! I got pecan tree sap all over my pants from rubbing up again my plants that were saturated with it, and wow, I am impressed! This saved my pants!! Thank you!!
I love the intro, the snow the woods, just fantastic.
same with the schared, I have the M1 and its a great little machete.
The Late Boy Scout, puts the product through a massive routine, showing you what yiu will get.
honest.
ethical
thank you
and good luck
Wow, thanks for this. I just used rubbing alcohol on a swimsuit that had birch sap on it for the last six months, after sending the suit through the wash and getting in a couple hot tubs. The sap came out pretty easy and I am ecstatic.
Cool tip... good to know.
Will it also remove the burn holes from stray campfire embers? ;)
LOL! We can dream...
You have to catch it early, while it is still glowing!
Still funny
just spit on it
People keep on complaining about him not getting to the point... Does no one understand what fast forwarding is?
It worked! Thanks! Just used it on my husband's jeans, and although it took several tries and lots of rubbing, it came out.
You Rock, Late Boy Scout!! I'm hopeful this'll save my favorite pink coat!
Wow, this really worked. My son had tried to remove some sap from his shorts, with no success, turned to me, and hand sanitizer applied and voila....sap gone!
I also had picked something up on a skirt from dryer at laundromat, thought it might be melted plastic, but it worked so well with the shorts, so I tried on skirt, and.......voila gone!
You scouts are something else!
Just tried this on my Columbia jacket that had FRESH sap on it after trimming my outdoor tree and I must say... AMAZING! And it took the dried sap off my hands as well! Yet to try it on dried set-in sap but I have a feeling it'll be just as great, thanks!
I really appreciate your post. I got several sap stains on a favourite jacket recently and was in despair over how to remove them..........but thanks to you now I've discovered how simple it is!
This actually helped so much I actually got the sap out of my clothes without needing a bunch of stuff
Aw, Dude!!! We're gonna lose a UA-cam brother when Good Morning America sees this and picks you up for a weekly "Homemaker's Hint" segment. You're gonna look awesome in that floral apron with the lace border :)
I didn't have hand sanitizer so I used isopropyl alcohol and it worked instantly.
Basically anything with alcohol will work. :)
i tried wine... it got the pine sap out, but not my pants are red ;)
Stuart Glover LMAO! Ok don't use ethyl alcohol! That is for drinking, not for cleaning. XD
Ouch sorry about that 😅🤭
I just used this on my cashmere sweater that had pine tar from decorating my Christmas tree. It worked fabulously! Thank you so much, I was afraid that my sweater was permanently ruined. Instead of applying and rubbing the material together, I gently rubbed the sanitizer into the fabric and used my fingernail to dislodge the pine tar. Easy and no damage to the cashmere.
Yes! The fingernails !
Thank you so much! This helped me get tree sap out of my hammock after a campout! 🌲❤️🌲
Works like a charm, I have an Airstream travel trailer, after 2 months parked under pine trees and spruce trees, I had about 30 blobs of sap on the roof...I slaved for a couple of hours removing 1/2 of them while precariously perched on a ladder...after watching this video I got a bottle of hand sanitizer left over from the pandemic and went to work, 15 or 20 minutes later the remaining blobs were a thing of the past. A damp sponge clean up, towel dry, and an application of 303 and "no worries". here is your solution to Pine and Spruce tree sap removal. BTW, wipe the blob and the soft sap will come off, then apply the hand cleaner, and the rest will come right off...easy peasy...
good advice that will certainly come in handy down the road.
good advice that will certainly come in handy down the road.
I just searched with the question and found this video, and I tried it just now and it really works! I threw a few things away because of sap!
The alcohol in the hand sanitizer is a solvent for sap so pretty much any alcohol based solution can work, I found that hand sanitizer gel works the best with an easy cleanup. It works great getting sap off car windshields and hard plastics. It tends to dissolve or soften gummy and soft plastic so be quick with cleaning and let the material dry. Great trick to clean a sticky trigger and saftey toggle on a sappy chainsaw too!
I had only pure grain alcohol in the house; worked perfectly. Thanks a lot for the advice.
Wow! Had already washed a brand new pair of shorts I got sap on -- thought they were ruined. Short video-- well worth the time. Thanks so much for your post !
Thank you so much for the valuable video. It helped me removing the stain off my clothes. Great man.
Brilliant! Couldn’t believe how easy it was to remove tree sap from new shorts, thank you soooo much. Was ready to throw them away until I followed your tips & it worked!! 👍
Happy to help!
Just what I needed. We had a sappy summer here in the PNW. Thank you.
Thank you so much 😊 I bought a black pant for my mother in law funeral and after the funeral we all decided to do a bonfire and sit on old tree stomped that we used to sit on. So I did and when I got up the back of my pants had tree sap all over my butt😢 I was so sad because it look so good on me and I try everything to get it out but it wasn’t going anywhere. I give up until I went on UA-cam and search and I found you 😀 you’re a life saver the sap came off and my pants is like new thanks to you 👏👏👏👏 thank you again
WOW - THANK YOU ... I just tried it & it worked great! Glad I didn't have to throw out my clothes.
Fantastic, I couldn't believe my eye when the sap spot on my silk/cotton pants just disappeared, unbelievable! THANK YOU!!!!! P.S.I rubbed a synthetic piece of fabric against it.
Sat on a park bench and got sap on the seat of my favorite leggings. Came home and watched your video and it WORKED! Thank you for sharing! The hand sanitizer worked instantly!
Thanks that was way easier then other solutions I've seen
I trashed a new pair of jeans and jacket with tree sap, you saved them both my dude. Many thanks!
Who would have thought hand sanitizer could do that. Thanks a ton for that advice, it worked like a dream.
Fabulous video. And you saved a pair of brand new shorts I had just given to my husband. He got tree gum all over the seat
of the shorts -- I thought they were done for! Thank you so much.
Was about to spend $100 on new hunting pants and this video saved me the money! Thanks
This worked perfectly. The seat of my shorts was just covered with sap. I mistakenly sat on a bench that had a big streak through it. I thought they were ruined. I just liberally put hand sanitizer on it and lightly rubbed it together and I could not believe it. Gone in 2 minutes. Thanks for taking time to make video.
It's the rubbing alcohol that does it, so you can just use that instead of sanitizer, tho I guess you are more likely to have hand sanitizer on hand than rubbing alcohol
Good to know but I like the gel consistency of the hand sanitizer. Really easy to apply.
Not until Covid, I don't have both. Now I have rubbing alcohol everywhere I go.
Sweet, thank you for showing this useful laundry information.
This was very helpful, I just finished working with my dad on some tree limbs and got sap in my favorite shorts, thanks!
You just saved my wife's favorite pair of sweat pants (I know...they're only sweats, but still lol). Hats off to you, good sir!
The hand sanitizer contains aceton and ethanol that are powerful solvents for the alifatic compounds in the sap.
Thank you so much. It is great to find someone you can trust. You are exceptional, thank you
Great review! It’s the rubbing alcohol that does the trick. Have some 80% alcohol for hand sanitizer during the cover-19, sprayed it on the sap stain and it came right off. Thanks for the tip!
You are correct… but the proof (or lack of) is in the washing… and unfortunately it did not come out in the wash. However the garment I tried it on was not a pair of pants with a smooth surface.. it was a pair of sweat pants and the sap is from a Christmas berry tree… not sure if that makes a difference…
8 years later your vidéo is still halping ❤️ thanks so much 🇩🇿🇭🇷
Also works great to get sap off your knives ;)-
I just tried this and it worked, so easy. Thank you.
Brilliant! Just used it on fig sap. Worked like magic. Thank you!
Thank you so much. Your video really helped me!!!
It worked. Thanks to you I saved my shorts from being trash👍🏻
Thank you for the tip on removing sap from clothing using hand sanitizer. After my wife sat on a picnic bench and inadvertently got sap on them we thought they were ruined. We tried the hand sanitizer as you indicated in your video and off the sap went! Thanks again!
Thank you for this! I haven’t worn a favorite jacket in 5 years 😂 It worked!! 🎉
Thanks so much for the wonderful video! I went camping and wor the same pair of shorts all weekend and got pitch all over the back! I was so scared it would not come out!
Literally just saved my favorite pair of hiking shorts!!!!
Awesome trick. I just used it to get SAP out of a nice pair of hiking pants that I thought were stained for life after trying to wash them and scrub them about 4 times. Thanks
Thanks man , this video was a life saver ❤
Thank you for making this video. I thought my new bathing suit was ruined, but your hand sanitizer tip allowed me to save it!
This works INSTANTLY and perfectly!! Thank you!!!
Wow, thanks! You saved my day. Good thing everybody has hand sanitizer these days :))
Used for redish sap from a Poplar tree. Worked for my husband's cotton shirt but not for my polyester cotton blend. Still a win as far as I am concerned!
How it works, in case you're interested (I'll spare you the details), is just like water dissolves sugar or salt. The sap adhering to the fibres of your clothing is more prone to swimming around in a non-polar solvent (hand sanitizer is a mixture of a few organic compounds such as alcohols and oils). By applying hand sanitizer, you are essentially not destroying the sap, you're just "transporting" it from your pants to the liquid that is your hand sanitizer (it should also work with pure rubbing alcohol/ethanol, more easily with oil and generally really well with long-chained alkanes).
My science has a long way to go, but shouldn't laundry detergent (which I assume to be amphiphilic) be able to do the same to the sap using the nonpolar regions of the detergent, and then the connected polar regions allow water to pull the detergent and sap away? I would also assume this would be easier with detergent than ethanol if detergents have longer hydrocarbon chains.
Laundry detergent is alkaline and is going to form so called resinates with the carboxylic acids which resin predominantly consists of. These are just as unpleasant as the resin itself since they're jellylike and also quite hydrophobic.
A simpler explanation, which also sounds plausible to me, is that the lipophilic part of the tenside is not long enough to interact with the large alicyclic organic part of the resinous acids.
I honestly can't find a satisfying explanation why laundry detergents do not work on resin stains, the above is just what I can think of.
It works great! I got pine pitch on my North Face hiking pants over the weekend, tried this and it was gone after rubbing the sanitizer in, took about 5 seconds. Thanks for sharing this!!
Thank you soooo much! My college is in the ADK's and this is great for getting the resin out of my clothes!
Orange hand cleaner works on some things that are hard but it is difficult with clothes as it has pumice and may wear on cloth
Hey Boy Scout! It worked great for us. Sat on bench with pitch, found hand sanitizer, Presto! Service badge for you at the very least.
Yep, it worked on a whole large area of sap on my son's shorts!
Very cool. I guess it really don't matter how it works as long as it works.
Oh my gosh it worked 100%!!! Amazing! It made the sap completely disappear!
I parked under a tree overnight, the next day I was loading the back of my Subaru and my knee was against the bumper, then I noticed I got tree sap on my brand new Levi 511's Damn!! Thanks I'll give it a shot.
Thank you so much!! My favorite pair of outdoor paints are saved. I'm so happy thanks to this video, simple & straightforward
God bless :-)
Instant Genius idea .. Thanks for saving my flannels.. carrying firewood gets sap on your clothes
Yesterday we got severe sticky tree sap on our hammock treehuggers. Easiest way we found to remove it was to use olive-oil. Immediately removes the stickyness and also makes it easier to remove the tree sap. We tried alcohol first, but the oil was easier. Use at own risk!
I use rubbing alcohol it's magic! I'll give hand sanitizer a try
It works! I saved my husband’s shirt! Thank you very much!
I got sap from my Christmas tree on a new pair of khakis (yes, my wife told me not to wear them bringing in the tree - she was right, I was wrong!). The Late Boy Scout is right - it worked beautifully and quickly. Great tip, thank you!
There’s alcohol in that sanitizer that takes it off. But his pants are nylon and can take alcohol but if it’s on any pants w cotton like jeans, it will leave a mark as it removes color.
Yeah 👍👍have not tried that.... an I don't know why. I figured out the hand sanitizer and pine sap playing with Xmas trees ❣ Not sure why I never thought they tried on my clothes..but did get it on me 😉But the kid did at school 🤗
You can also use rubbing alcohol with a cotton ball.
