  • A Review of my Paul Reed Smith original McCarty model....made in 1997...
    The McCarty model, first released in 1994 by Paul Reed Smith, was created from his research and conversation with Ted McCarty, the man responsible for many patents during his vice-presidency..then his presidency with the Gibson Guitar Co. in the early days, from 1949-1966. The McCarty model featured a thicker one piece Mahogany body with the deep carved book matched Flamed Maple top. The earliest ones featured the McCarty Burst (recreating the look of the faded old '59 Les Paul guitars that had become the ultimate Vintage collectable guitar) Like this example, many early ones featured the crescent moon inlays for the position markers down the Indian Rosewood fretboard. The pick-ups were recreated to represent the early versions from Ted McCarty's designs......but had the addition of the push/pull coil split on the tone pot. A set Mahogany neck is also standard with 22 medium frets. The headstock has a milder tilt-back than the Gibson counterpart. The headstock is plain Mahogany with vintage style low mass tuners reminiscent of the old Kluson style tuners. This model was offered standard with the "Wide Fat" neck, again paying homage to the designs from Ted McCarty's influences at Gibson.

    I use to have 1996 McCarty model and the pickups in it were Dragon Bass pickups with covers.

    My dad has one of these exact guitars and I've been searching everywhere for some more insight into it because I'm such a layman. I've only just started practicing and learning to play using his PRS McCarty after some touch and go experience with the guitar over the last 20 years.
    He passed away in February and I wish I had asked him for more insight into the history behind this guitar because now I find I want to know more about it. Just so happens that I stumble across this video tonight and it's been very insightful, so thank you!

      Hey ... Thanks! I'm very sorry for your loss, but I am glad that I was of a little help in clearing up some of your questions about a magnificent guitar. Hoping that playing it will bring good memories back to you fo your Dad. That's a wonderful legacy to have from him.

    I have a 1998 McCarty in Antique Amber and it is THE best PRS I've ever played. It's far and away different form the current PRS offerings which in my opinion have become very "clinical" in nature. Still great guitars...but "clinical". I really lucked-out because I bought my McCarty new and sight/unplayed from a store on the recommendation of salesperson via telephone. It's very resonant, sounds great and plays great with a perfect neck shape. It has an unusually flamed maple top made of Eastern Big Leaf Maple which looks like crushed velvet with a lot of movement. It's one of my favorite guitars that I own.

      Congratulations! They are very good guitars & were my favorites from PRS at the time. While I really loved this guitar, I was not enamored by the "coil split" in this first iteration. Their newest versions are much more usable....and I do like to use them!

      @@BrentAdams I don't think the pickups are as good as the originals though. I'm not sure why they even incorporated coil splitting in the original McCarty's if they were trying to emulate a '59 LP. Maybe a little Fender influence.

      @@markn4526 I believe part of the process of the experimentation of this model comes from both....Ted McCarty...and also a long period of working with David Grissom to come up with a guitar that met his needs. He & Paul had been working on things for a while...and the McCarty was the first real breakthrough on getting things closer to what David was looking for. The Coil Splitting/tapping feature was a feature he was also looking for in his "Ideal" guitar.

      @@BrentAdams The 25 inch scale is a compromise between Gibson's 24 and 3/4 and Fender's 25 and 1/2 too. I've come to prefer the 25 inch scale although I mostly play 24 and 3/4.

    • @BrentAdams
      @BrentAdams  Рік тому

      @@markn4526 Yes, Paul says he was originally trying split the difference in scale length to be close to either one when Players tried his out...kind of a happy median or middle ground. I play everything from the 24 3/4" scale up to a 30" scale on one of my lowest Baritone Guitars...and everything in-between. Thanks again Mark!

      Thanks much Don. I'm NOT an "expert" on PRS... but I did some research into this model after I became its "caretaker". At the time this came out...it was definitely my favorite sounding guitar from PRS. I had tried them before, but wasn't that crazy about the sound of the pickups in the typical "Custom" or "Standard" models. This one made me happy. The coil split (or tap...I believe this one has the coil split) was OK for me at the the time. Now with their newer TCI pickups and the coil tap...it makes this option on the old version seem very weak in comparison, but it is such a great playing guitar!

      Thanks for watching...and for your comments. Paul did work with Grissom, but Ted was the main source for trying to get to what Grissom was hoping to get through Paul's guitar creations. These beginning McCarty models were just the leaping off point, I think. (I love Grissom's work in Storyville!)
