I bought a bottle today, only £27 in Waitrose and a free coffee too! And they are so polite it can't be right. I keep expecting them to ask me to leave. I tried sipping it neat (not in the shop, I did actually go home and wait until 5pm): fiery, intense, viscous and the front of my tongue went numb. That is some strong whisky! Added an ice cube and a splash of water. Suddenly it's incredibly sweet and flavourful. Even diluted the flavours are distinct and present, far more than I'd expected. Was drinking it alongside a bottle of Adnams bitter, a fairly weak, traditional ale. Tried another splash, neat, small sips. My lips started going numb. Two moderate glasses (OK quite generous doubles by pub standards) and a bottle of weak ale and I feel half cut. I have met my match. I concede. I now understand that I am not a real man. Also I am starting to appreciate why Buckfast is a mere child's drink north of the border. I am now a heretic who requires an ice cube and a splash of soda water else I feel scared! Impressive stuff. Am going to work on this and try to man up.
I like your review. Mellow jazz background music is interesting. But maybe this one needs some mid 20th century atonal orchestral music for the intro, perhaps fading into something melodic as water is added?
Ah you're all good. Enjoy your whisky however you want to enjoy it. You'll find that your tolerance for the stronger flavours will grow, and eventually you'll seek out the really bold stuff. Its a journey!
@@NoNonsenseWhisky You're right! And thank you for such a considerate and thoughtful response. Now here I am 4 days later enjoying the last little dram from the bottle. I am no longer a sore virgin 😁 Am starting to appreciate this kind of whisky. Just the merest touch of water or ice and it shows a different nature. Really enjoying it. I will definitely be drinking this again.
Great video, Vin. Always a Deanston fan and defiantly a no-brainer for most scotch lovers. Here's in the states, it went on sale for $16 a bottle. Needless to say between the 4 of us, we bought 10. :-) Great Scotch for the price.
How does a place even afford to sell at that price? I would literally buy every bottle I saw
I got the fabulous chance to drink both Deanston 12 and Virgin oak over this weekend. Both have fairly similar notes: heather, honey, green apples, baked apples, muesli cereal, malty cereal, nice and velvety. But my conclusion was: the Deanston Virgin oak felt more "young", the alcoholic notes was more apparent and had some slight bitterness more than the Deanston 12. The 12 on the other hand felt more "relaxed" (i.e Matured) and definitely more sweeter heather & honey notes. They are both unique and also different in their own ways, NONE of them were bad. My point is in either case you will not have any regrets. If you are looking for "raw power" on the palate (sweet ginger and white pepper spice) the Virgin oak might be just for you. If you want more Maturity and added natural sweetness, then the 12 is for you.
Their 9 year Bordeaux cask matured offering is my first Deanston bottle and it’s amazing. Thanks for reviewing this one - it’s definitely on my list now.
Sounds like a decent way to start! If you do get, make sure you let me know how you like it
It's also about triple the price in NYC. It is good though, very.
The Deanston VO is $50 Canadian in Ontario Canada. That is the only Deanston currently available in the province. It's a few dollars less than Monkey Shoulder, which I also enjoy. But the VO seems a touch more interesting. Hopefully the 12 will show up here eventually.
Sad part is the 12 is almost double the price at the lcbo. The vo is good value in Ontario.
A very nice Deanston and great review Vin!
Greetings from South Africa 😊🥃!
Cheers Gustav! It's a top dram
Great review, VAPF.
The 12 year is perfect for me - finished a bottle within a few sittings because it was excellent drinking. I’m fine with NAS, and would give this a crack off your review. Deanston have a very firm range, maintaining their traditional methods, without being too off-kilter, opting to finish with different barrels. The 12 year is untinkered with and I like that conservative edge it has about itself, assured in its own merit as opposed to trying to wow you.
Cheers man! If you like the 12, then this is decent next step. It definitely loses its conservative edge though and really goes for those powerful flavours. Worth trying but may not be the dram you're looking for
Love the 12, and the 20 is enchanting.
Awesome review Vin....I love Deanston so much..even this NAS entry level is delicious. Cheers buddy!
It's a good one!
Really appreciated your explanation of the effect of virgin oak, and the comparison with bourbon. Always something to learn 👍🏻
Cheers! It's important to note when stuff is finished rather than fully matured 👌
Blind tasted this against the Deanston 12 and was surprised that I liked Virgin Oak better. And it‘s half the price compared to D12 here in Manila. Cheers Vin! I like your reviews because they are short and concise!
Cheers Alex, I'm glad you like the format! Its always a little win when you find you like the cheaper one better isn't it
@@NoNonsenseWhisky I’m happy I didn’t have to flip a coin😄.
I really like it. Here in cape Town its rather well priced we pay R 470.00 which is closer to 25 pounds. For that its a damn good whisky! Great after a cold surf!
Solid dram. Bang on review and advice.
Cheers Al 🥃🥃
Great review Vin, I agree strongly. I am a big fan of Deanston, really cool distillery, fabulous liquid. I have a bottle of this and it is one of my faves for those moments when you want a punchy but fruity dram.
It's definitely becoming a firm favourite over here!
Just a point Vin - Stirling is a city... as is Dunblane, so just outside 2 cities!
I bought this after Roy bigging it up. When I finally got around to tasting it, I was disappointed. However, I went back to it a few days later and with water I actually enjoyed it.
It's a tough one when folk are raving about it. Sometimes the neck pour can give a bad first impression. I'm glad it clicked with you eventually though
I had a bottle of this and did the opposite. I quite enjoyed the wood notes at first. As I came to the end of the bottle I felt that my digestive system didnt care for it for some reason.
VinPF! Great 👍 reviews as always 👌 ( that's why I subscribe, duh!) Anyhoo, this dram is great and I think it compares very well 2 the Tomatin Dualchas ( virgin oak and ex- Bourbon also? Cheers 🍻 from ETennessee, and Merry Christmas
Great value for money! Just killed a bottle on the weekend with some bbq and cigars along with a highland park valknut
Sounds like a pretty ace weekend!
Good review Vin. I like to have a few affordable daily drammers in the mix so this might be worth considering for the price.
I definitely recommend it. I'd hope you would like it too but you can never 100%
I love this stuff. I love the price too. My current go to.
I was very surprised by it. I must get the 12
Great review, Vin! I have been interested in trying this one for awhile now. 🥃
I'd feel confident in advising you bump it up your list. Real nice 🥃
Thanks for your thoughts here Vin. I continue to enjoy this. Lots of flavour and I think it has a broader appeal than some Scotch, likely because of that Virgin Oak finish. Your comment on an age stamp tweak a bit. I appreciate an age stamp when it's there, but only in that it is another piece of a bottle's history. Just like casking, mashbill or blend info, distillation process etc. Cheers!
I'm pegging it as my new recommendation for people looking shaking up their flavours for sure
Half way through this before I clocked the message on the light box. Nice! 😁
This was available for a while around £25-28 here. Closer to £40 I think it starts to run into serious trouble at the hands of the 12yo. I know it's a different take, but I'd still buy the 12, despite some uncovering poorer batches.
Easter eggs all over the joint here 😊
I made the mistake of skipping this for the 12 YO after hearing some hype and can't really get behind the 12. I'm most of the way through the bottle now and it's really quite harsh, peppery & resinous. Maybe I got a dud bottle 🤔
Need to try this one next I think! Cheers for the review Vin 😁👍
Just one of those things. There are plenty of bottles that's I'm very meh about. Hope this one fairs better for you though!
I enjoyed my first bottle of the 12 and went and got a second one. Second time round it was a bit meh for me.
I'd be willing to say that you got a dud bottle, because after 3-4 bottles over the past year or two, Deanston 12 really has become my favorite "standard 12". However, for a few bucks more, about $60 in NYC, Tullibardine The Murray 12 year old cask-strength is an outstanding whisky & value, but I understand it's a bit hard to track down. Cheers!
@@welshtoro3256 Hmm significant batch discrepancy maybe? I may be stopping by the distillery in a few weeks so will have chance to try it from the source 😉👍
@@MrChristopherMolloy Ahh I've tried looking for that Tullibardine before - tough one to get a hold of over here now.
Like so many, tried this bc of Roy’s evangelism & definitely enjoyed it. I haven’t gotten a 2nd bottle yet but that’s only bc I’ve got too many other deanstons I want to try.
I'd definitely suggest moving on to other bottlings in the range, there's some real gems in there!
No Nonsense Whisky yup! Loving the 12, Bordeaux matured, brandy finished & the “mistake” 14yr organic. Still need to get my hands on the 15 organic, the 18 & some of those rare/exotic ones like the Palo cortado.
I think I have a sample a special 18yr version on my shelf!
Awesome! I love the 12 and 18. I maybe lean towards the 12. A friend of mine has this virgin oak bottle so I'll grab a sneaky taste next time I'm over there :)
Let me know what you think!
Please review 'Limavady', an Irish whisky for us. Thanks.
Interesting, in Germany the 12 yo (@33) is about 11 Euros (10 GBP) more expensive than the VO (@22).
You're not the first to say! Seems we get shafted for it over here
VO is $20+ cheaper than the 12 here in Canada
Deanston Virgin Oak sells for about $27, and the 12 y.o. sells for closer to $50 in NYC. Hands down, Deanston 12 is currently my favorite standard 12 y.o.
Woah that's a big difference! And amazingly cheap for the VO!
@@NoNonsenseWhisky It is, and while VO is a good deal and far superior than any comparably priced blend, I'm not too fond of it. For about the same price, Tomatin Dualchas/Legacy is just better put together IMO.
this is $30 in the states (or 23 pound sterling for you). an absolute steal IMHO and yes very appealing to a bourbon drinker.
That really is a bargain
Maybe a bourbon “transition” whisky? Sounds interesting 🙂
I'm always on the lookout for those drams that shift people out of their comfort zones
personally I love this stuff...great bang for my dollar 46 bux...all day long !!
And easily available too! Winner
Definitely get the apple crumble off this one. For the money you.cant go wrong.
Glad that's not just me. Always a worry with a weird tasting note!
It's decent whisky, and something a bit different from most... Bottles of this don't last long on my bar.
I can bet! Hard to reach past for sure
Good dram, very poor implementation of cork use, cork dissolves and drops white substance into whisky itself, never imagine they would use cork screw without testing it how reacts with 46 per cent alcohol.
Whisky and Tango? You sick bastard.
Also the best apple crumble is pear crumble. Yes, I'm quite drunk.
🤔 I've not actually tried a pear crumble
@@NoNonsenseWhisky Then I envy you your future. :)
p.s. Good vidya. Should have mentioned that already.
😂 cheers! 🥃
