I haven't seen this since watching it live in 1968. What a powerful speech and a total shock to us all when he announced he would not run again. Another thing, LBJ was only 59 when he made this speech.
Me too was 18 at the time.
His decision had nothing to do with age. It was more related to divisions in the Democratic party, probably that divide between Democrats and DixieCrats. In addition, the Vietnam War was a tragic and divisive element. The anti war movement certainly was not going to stop until that war was ended. Ultimately, George Wallace introducing his third party split the party at the Democratic convention in 1968. That's how we got stuck with Nixon.
@@girlfromthebronxbywayofelb7288 Johnson was unelectable.
It was widely expected as Johnson was so unpopular.
He had already decided in September 1967 not to run again.
Mr Lyndon B. Johnson for being our President of the United States of America. You decided to not seek another term. And we all understood. You loved us all everywhere. Thank you, Mr President Sir. We do still miss you, Sir.
The racist could not have been nominated in 1968 as his own party despised him.
Lyndon Johnson made announcement that He will not be running for his another presidency
This astonishing made announcement gave Richard Nixson golden opportunity to winning the presidency otherwise Nixson would never had been elected as president of the United State
When Nixson lost the presidential election against John F Kennedy and he lost another election for the California governor position everyone said Nixson political career was over but he came back and luck from the Lyndon Johnson not seeking for another term gave golden opportunity to winning the presidency for the Richard Nixson
George Wallace split the Democratic party with a third party. Also, Eugene McCarthy had the most primary votes.
The Vietnam War ... sadly we're still making the same mistakes 50yrs later.
HR McMaster’s book “Dereliction of Duty:Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam”
As Jhon Wayne said god help this troop when im gone
It's kind of astonishing how both Rather and Mudd completely bypassed at first mentioning Humphrey as even being a candidate and that it would either be RFK or McCarthy as the nominee.
I believe Eugene McCarthy had more primary votes, but the Democratic convention in 1968 was an open convention with an ugly floor fight. They decided to nominate Humphrey. Then George Wallace split the party with his own third party. A real mess.
That's why it was important in 2024 to avoid an open convention. They are ugly and dysfunctional. Democracy is not chaos. Go Kamala go. Go Tim go. 💙🌊🐬💙🌊
@@girlfromthebronxbywayofelb7288 The Democratic Party is openly anti-Semitic.
Johnson was openly racist, and he condemned African-Americans to live in poverty.
