The reason for the U bends is that mechanized discharge tube manufacture was comparatively easy. Making helical discharge tubes without needing hordes of glassblowers making them by hand wasn't perfected until the 2010s.

Nice lamps, they were made December 1995 (5M) and July 1996 (6G). I have a few of these, including one with the R30 shade though the front plastic is gone, the cement holding the tubes loose, and it is at EOL, though it still lights up with some flicker to it.
