I've heard that line many times over the years and while I believe it is well intended, I think it falls short of the mark. We should be nice to all people not because of what we may gain for doing so as we "climb the ladder," or because of what we may reap "on the way down" for not having done so, but because it's just the right thing to do.
I agree with you 100%, but I don`t think this story is really about race. It`s about the arrogance and feeling of superiority from leadership. As a chef, my dish room people have the same respect that I give my cooks, prep cooks, managers, and owners. These men on the board did not understand that. I have grown deserving people from my dish room into great Exec, chefs on their own. To me, this story is about the difference between "bosses and leaders". The CEO here is a true leader who taught the board that their worth is no greater than that of the cleaning lady.
There are too many people who think that the world revolves around them and they are indispensable , but later when it may be too late , they find out how wrong they are! Great story and all the best to her and people like her!
I really enjoyed this clip. I used to work as a receptionist at a construction company, many of the clients really enjoyed having me at the post. An accountant told an interviewee that "She's just the receptionist - she's nothing". That really stung. I was the first person many people saw, I answered the phone, did the TYPING - YES!! TYPED on a manual Underwood cast iron typewriter - really developed those finger muscles!! Except for that one sour grape, the other employees genuinely cared about me. Never underestimate the first person who greets you!!
Oh - readers - RichardDorr, & Morissyarnell603 "et al" - Remington made more than weapons - they made cast iron typewriters too! - They could be a weapon as well - if you were strong enough, you could drop it on someone's foot, or really strong, pick it up and throw it at them!!
You're so right! Evelyn’s story is a powerful wake-up call to everyone who underestimates others and sees themselves as untouchable. Watching her rise from “invisible” to a force of change, especially in a room full of arrogant executives, feels like a scene from a movie - but even better because it's so real. Don’t you think it’s fascinating how someone can stay humble yet end up holding all the power? It really makes me wonder about the people we overlook every day who might have such incredible stories to tell. Who do you think might be the "Evelyn" in our lives? I'll be here to analyze and respond to any other comments you share - ready to keep the conversation going!
It's truly eye-opening how many people can be blind to the interconnectedness of others, thinking they are irreplaceable until a moment of realization hits. Stories like this remind us that strength can come from the most unexpected places, and sometimes it takes a shift in perspective to see it. What do you think drives people to overlook the value in others until it's too late?
The moral of the story is that respect human beings irrespective of what they are. I am just reminded of the line, “they who stand and wait also serve “.
My Dad told us the story of working on a job site, hearing one of the workers complaining about an old man driving an old beat-up pick-up truck onto the job site and then the old man spending hours picking up nails strewn on the job site. Dad told the guy complaining, that the old man was the owner of the job site. The owner of the largest residential development corporation in the country at the time. My Mother used to say, treat everyone the way you'd want to be treated. And, if you have nothing nice to say about someone, say nothing at all.
This story is such a powerful reminder that we should never underestimate anyone based on their role or appearance. 🙌 The twist was absolutely satisfying! Kudos to the cleaning lady for showing grace, strength, and intelligence. Respect is earned, not given by titles! 👏👏
@@Thomas-15212-R I completely agree with this line. So many priceless things in life, like kindness, wisdom, or resilience, don’t always 'shine' in a conventional way but are incredibly meaningful
It's amazing how the story flips expectations and shows that true strength and intelligence often come from unexpected places. The cleaning lady's grace and power are a testament to how we should never judge others by their roles or appearances. It's a powerful reminder that respect is built through actions, not titles. What do you think inspired her to reveal her true capabilities at that moment?
*Evelyn Johnson's story is so powerful! A true reminder that resilience and humility can take you far. Her transformation from being invisible to owning the room is inspiring! Thank you for sharing this incredible journey!*
I don't know if this story is true or not. But it is inspiring. An OAP now, but through my life, right from the age of 4-5yrs, I've met up with some extreme bullies. I've had several jobs, leaving most of them due to coming across bullies!! So much so, I ended up being very ill with an anxiety complex. I'm happy to say, I'm better now. Nowadays, I play music for the elderly & those less fortunate than myself, trying to give some comfort & advice to those who need it. Always try to treat others as you yourself would like to be treated, then you won't go far wrong. Learning how to play a musical instrument, (My 1st one was harmonica.) helped me recover. Music is a great healer. Remember, no matter what color your skin, whatever your religion or aspiration's, we are all part of the same human race. Please try to treat everyone with kindness and respect. Thanks for reading this, may your God go with you.
Absolutely! Imagine the impact if more "Evelyns" stepped forward in companies where respect and humility are lacking. Watching her challenge the status quo like that is inspiring - it makes you wonder just how many hidden leaders are out there, silently observing, waiting for the right moment. Do you think this kind of change is actually possible in today's corporate world? It's a story that gives hope, doesn’t it?
I've seen a few versions of the same story, one was of a man who acted like the janitor, very similar to this story and another one was of a homeless guy that always sat on the sidewalk in front of their offices! Even so, it's a great lesson in how people should be treated!
Quite simple, be humble and respectful to everyone (which we should do naturally anyway). Sadly too many people in society who think they are more important than everyone else.

He provided information to us workers and listened to the feed back. Another guy warned the company was going to lose its shirt on this one particular job. He had rebuilt this one large electrical box/junction box three times. The VP was alarmed and ordered Engineering to go over everything. Months later the economy became very bad. The V.P.. got a keg of beer on a Friday after work and let us know the status of the overall industry. It was worse than we could have dreamed. He told us he'd keep everyone on the payroll for three months and then have to lay almost everyone off. He stated he had no idea when he'd be able to hire everyone back. I later learned the last person was hired back 3.5 years later. Some years ago an Executive of a large company mocked, in print, in a newspaper people who had to use Food Banks and other safety net measures. It wasn't long before the newspaper came out with a notice that that particular Executive had been fired and was now utilizing the things he once mocked. I wonder if he had been marked 'toxic' and no one would hire him.

I have worked in a pharmaceutical company for 15 years. The top executives took 80% of total salaries in the company. The morality is not there. All they do is, figure out how to take away benefits from low-paying employees. The upper management keeps on taking more raise, more benefits, better medical insurance. This needs to change, otherwise economy will be dead.
I kept wondering if I should watch this video and I am glad that I did. A simple but interesting and believable story line with the best narration I have heard in many a day.
Evelyn Johnson is a remarkable lady. Her avatars are numerous and awesome. Some time back she was Jeda Reynolds a trauma surgeon who saved a man's life in a first class flight and taught an arrogant fellow traveller a much needed lesson. Now she has turned into the majority shareholder of a large corporate and taught the whole Board another lesson. Keep going Evelyn or Jeda. More power to you!
A wonderful story, but we all have to acknowledge, it is just a story and not reality. I have been a Turn-Around Manager for 22 years in Europe and the US. Corporate reality is toxic in most cases. Arrogance and disregard on the upper level of management is wide spread. The complete disregards of all the people who make a company going is stunning. It is indeed a very efficient way to experience all of this from the bottom ranks. Only here one will see the real faces of people. I saw first hand what it does to people if the “fear-factor” is taken out of the organization and is beeing replaced by fun and pride which in return causes creativity to blossom. I have seen first hand what it does to an organization when employees are allowed to be creative and management seriously listens to their ideas and use them. This creates recognition on the job and proud employees who have fun doing their work and take ownership and responsibility of their tasks and projects. I have seen companies thrive and become way more successful than they have ever been before.
