  • Sonic State caught up with Michael from Baby Audio at NAMM 2024 for a first look at their latest creation, Atoms. Atoms is a physical modelling synthesizer which introduces a unique concept known as a mass-spring interaction network, providing a rich and evolving organic texture. Michael explains that Atoms distills a complex underlying model into six simple parameters, allowing for a wide range of sonic possibilities.
Michael demonstrated the physical modelling technology, which uses a network of masses and springs excited by a virtual bow to produce sounds. The interface offers a visual representation of the underlying physical processes, providing users with a deeper understanding as they experiment. Atoms boasts an internal automation system, contributing to its evolving, organic texture. With a range spanning from natural spring-like textures to sci-fi cinematic atmospheres.
Atoms Available: Feb 7th 2024 Introductory Price: 59 USD

Hi everyone, thanks for the interest in Atoms! Just to respond to a few comments here regarding MPE, we're aware that polyphonic aftertouch is available as a standard MIDI parameter but we chose to use MPE for the per-key channel pressure modulation source because it offered more flexibility.
I wasn't able to easily demonstrate it with the patch we chose for this demo, but the MPE source appears in the motion menus when Atoms' MPE mode is enabled for the preset.

Sorry, I am still confused. Does Atoms fully support MPE, or only one MPE parameter (pressure). Specifically, is MPE pitch bend properly supported? Thanks!

Polyphonic aftertouch and MPE work differently within the MIDI protocol, so that answer was confusing, but I'm assuming it can do both? I like the animated LED rings within each knob, and the animated polygons, but I'm not sure why the faint "radioactive" symbol, which wraps around those features, features animated glow-worms traveling along its paths? Does their speed, intensity and color relate to anything, or are those aspects purely ornamental? That could get annoying to look at if the animated glow-worms aren't synced to the audio in some way. I'm sure I'll see a longer presentation before launch.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. This tech, while not common, has been around for many years... If it is indeed scanned synthesis... Which it certainly sounds like.
