I used to listen to radio Caroline every night at 9,00 every night ! Johnny walker was fantastic ! Me and the other apprentices had a minuets silence when the government took it off !!! Bastards
Hans Vrenken Funny you should mention Radio Caroline. When I was 13 or14 yrs old I could get Radio Caroline on the Marine band in Boston Mass. at certain times. I wonder how many other in the U.S. were listening to it too. Not many I'm sure.
I first heard this wonderful tune in the early 60s . We were at a party in a flat in Egmont Close (Malta) and Anne Kidd, who lived in the flat had just bought the disc and she played it all evening .
I first heard this song a few weeks ago, and I'm 55! That twangy guitar is the acme of what I consider the best rock. I ordered two cds and can't wait for them to arrive. What? No computer? Only guitars, drumns, and more strings? What is music coming to? This, I hope. Keep 'em coming, for this is what I listen to inbetween Mahler and The Staple Singers and my beloved Joni Mitchell. Ten to one, Joni listens to this type music.
I was twelve years old in 1960 when this song was released. Being in junior high at the time, was he thinking about me? Did he have us chil'en in mind when he wrote this? That's what went through my mind whenever I listened to this on the radio.
Some of Duane's best songs (like this particular tune) are ones that never played in concert.....Theme for Moon Children, Son of Rebel Rouser, Jerky Jalopy, The Climb and several others.
On this day in 1961 {September 26th} the western movie "A Thunder of Drums" had its world premier in New York City... Duane Eddy played a supporting role in the film; he played the part of a guitar strumming Calvary private by the name of Trooper Eddy...
Johnny Walker came to the US around 1976-77 and worked at the legendary KSAN for about a year. The stories he told about the Radio Caroline days were amazing...
The song "Because They're Young" is also to be counted among the great international hits of Duane Eddy. It is played with the baritone guitar DANELECTRO. Congratulations and greetings from Italy ua-cam.com/video/DEg12zBRkok/v-deo.html. *BECAUSE THEY'RE YOUNG * (Duane Eddy - Gretsch Guitar cover)
dannie if you'd have listened to the great man he told you what / who Johnnie Walker was/is but if you don't know about Radio Caroline what planet are you on?
Mr Eddy wasn’t heard of for many years but did do a lot of help recording with Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood. There was more to him in the recording buisness.
Tuned 1 octave lower than a standard guitar. Duane got that lowdown and dirty twang on an inexpensive Danelectro masonite guitar he bought in Hollywood, CA. Featured it prominently on his Twang's the Thang LP.
I’m 77 yr played guitar since 14yr
This recording still gives me Chills
This song always brings me back to a great time in my life.
Wonderful tribute to our Johnnie Walker. Wonderful tune from more carefree days.
Simply an unforgettable piece!!!!
I was so excited to hear Duane dedicate this to Johnnie Walker, one of the best disc jockeys the world has ever known.

Always great to hear and see Duane
Seemed like very humble man. not high minded. down to earth. One of the best ever R.I.P. Duane Eddy
Going back in time with the nation on Caroline 259 in the medium wave .....the sixties....great.. love it!

A living legend! Thanks for the post.
You're welcome. I'm glad people are still enjoying Duane.
And once again, thanks for the post.
Very nice! Sounds better than ever. Very cool Roger's drum kit too. Appropriate for the era the song was originally recorded in.
Go Duane. On the road, many years on. Mr. Twang. Nice to see and hear.
Brilliant!! Thank you MR Eddy!!
Cheese and Grain ! A FANTASTIC evening! Yeppp , i was there !
I have a couple more from this gig, I'll have to dig them out from piles of old hard drives. What a brilliant night though!

BRAVO!!!!
Johnnie Walker: UK disc jockey. Radio Caroline (one of the offshore UK pirates of the 60s), BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 1.

Love this tune. Always felt it should have been the theme tune to a great western, not to the film of the same name.
I agree.
nice baritone sound !! Duane like the deep Baritone sound...me too.

Where are the strings at this live performance? Nonetheless, one of my all-time favorites.

Let's put it this way. A hell of a lot more of people have heard of Johnnie than will ever hear of you.
Can't work out how he's got his guitar tuned.. 🤔
Its a baritone guitar

Twang from a Danelectro.
