Why? Don't you think "hispanics" can be privileged? I live in South America, used to live in the South in the US,...and here they are way more racist and privileged than people in the US. This is also how you explain the rise of people like Castro, Morales, Chavez, Correa...
Paola: please... stop asking questions like "do you think that as a hispanic man..." or like "what is your opinion as a liatina Cuban white woman...". Why don't you try "what do you think...." or "what's your opinion about..." Groups don't think. Individuals think. You run against a wall every time you think that the idea someone has to have because they fit into the identity category that you, Paola, are putting over them doesn't match what the actual individual thinks.
“Groups don’t think, individuals think.” Oh yeah, it’s not like “cultures” and “communities” are real things. Also, would you extend that principle to, oh I don’t know, transgender people or leftists or Muslims?
Not a Trump or Proud Boys fan, but what an extremely condescending “journalistic” report. Just because they don’t think the same way doesn’t mean they have mental issues or are fundamentally racist. Very bizarre reporting from someone with one of the worst haircuts I’ve seen to act like there is some overall set of beliefs that Latinos need to have. Does she think people in those countries actually even like each other?

I would love to have one of those turds over at Vice hear how servicemen talk to each other. I'll put it this way: One of the funniest racist jokes I ever heard was when I was in the Army deployed to Iraq. It was a black dude who told me the joke. Nothing was off-limits when it came to talking shit about each other. Anyone who didn't like it could suck a hill of dicks. Having shed blood, sweat and tears for each other, we earned that right. The line in Full Metal Jacket when the drill instructor said "...you are all equally worthless" is how it works in the military. It is in the deepest, darkest, most horrifying situations that you find true equality. I think a lot of the racial tension we're seeing now is because so few people really have to struggle for anything. In the civilian world, failing a test means losing your tuition. In my former line of work, failing a test meant losing your life. Not only your life, but that of a lot of other people as well. Worse than fucking up and getting yourself killed is surviving a fuck up, knowing you got a lot of other people killed.
I wanted to watch this documentary with an open mind, but the host of this film spent more time trying to preach than trying to understand. I don't think she bothered to understand, and instead tried to force feed liberal talking points to all watching. Sick.
@Symbolic Gesture Well if everybody is saying the same thing then what does that tell you? Better yet, do not take these comments as proof and look it up yourself. Or do you want someone else to tell you how to think? I am not attacking you by the way. Just in case you have feelings that where brought upon reading this.
As a Central American born and raised in Miami, the guy's answer to when she asked if Central Americans immigrants should get the same kind of support he wants Venezuelans to have...... is not shocking in the least. And it's very sad. We as latinos need to do better.
@Dingle berry McDo not at all. Seeing people as being part of a group and not as individuals is the problem with the modern left. HE needs to do better, not "we".
I’m Chicano and I don’t feel oppressed, I also don’t feel like white people are better than me by simply being white. We are all equal in the eyes of God.
Agreed. I'm a Hispanic female. I am not a victim. It's more oppressing for a white person (liberal) to believe that they are better than me because they are white and I am a minority.
I love seeing this. You are correct! The psychological exploitation of oppression (real & imagined) are in the Marxist playbook. The ideology needs to go bye-bye! Love ❤️ to you all.

I think its important to recognize that racism doesn't mean you are a white supremacists (this is how the proud boys seem to interpret the meaning), it means that you don't hold all races to an equal standard.
But she literally said to the proud boys you are thought of and referred to as white supremacists she didn't say you are viewed as racial discriminatory people, which would have made more sense, she said. People call you a hate group and white supremacist, which they're not white supremacists because they're not white. They do have racist ideology, though.
Sure, both sides can argue that, but only the Left would say “it’s dangerous” about freedom of speech, it sounds bad without context and downright pathetic the way he said it...
Same here. I'm a first generation America. Funny though what made my family change was Trump. We're not Cuban though, but my mom is Latina and both she and my dad were pretty much lifelong conservatives. But they didn't see themselves as better than those come from Mexico or Central America and they did see that the push for democratic socialism was not the same socialism/communism my mom's family faced coming from Venezuela or that many people we know faced in Cuba. None of us are necessarily democrats either, none of us kids were ever Republicans but my parents could not be republican anymore when they finally saw all the racism, hatred, and cronyism be spoken out loud and brought about by the Trump administration coming into power. Trump has so much more in common with those strong man dictators than he does with any other democratically elected leader of a free country. If he hadn't had the checks and balances set in place by the existence of the other branches of government he would have stripped this country of democracy and put himself into a role similar to Putin, but probably a lot more stupid so maybe more like Dear Leader Kim.
@HM Fitness the United states of America has a checks and balances system that will never allow communism to happen. Also there's more guns than people in this country, especially in Texas alone lol so we'd revolt so fast

This was a really good episode and a fantastic look into the dichotomy that exists in Miami and particularly the sad irony in the Cuban American community. The vast majority of Cubans that came to Miami during Castro communism were given government assistance from policies that were enacted by Democrat politicians.

@@user-rw2dr5my1s He is talking about people applying for asylum who do not qualify for asylum. There is a criteria. It’s not based on race or ethnicity but rather political and religious reasons. Most of Mexicans and Central Americans don’t fulfill this criteria and their asylum petitions are denied. Cubans and Venezuelans do fulfill this requirement due to their socialist dictatorships, which are political entities.
@@user-rw2dr5my1s You are right. There are more reasons but political and religious persecution are the most common and credible claims for asylum. Latino is a U.S. term. If you went to Columbia (for example) and asked someone what they are they’d say they’re Colombian. Not latin, not Hispanic. Just five minutes of digging would reveal that to anyone willing to take a look.
The "journalist" and the professor need to go. The bias is UNREAL, although I shouldn't be surprised that they would put words in other peoples' minds and mouths.
I disagree simply because the journalist's and professor's narrative is absolutely and unequivocally contradicted by what the people being interviewed are telling them. When the question of assimilation comes up near the end, the professor basically rejects the notion of it and wonders what anyone of color would stand to gain from it. Of course they're going to identify as a negation of their own background when their parents and grandparents were being oppressed by socialism. Thats why they came here. Theres no amount of spin that VICE could have added to this to support their narrative. Even the college kid, who dissected the leader's identity to being anything other than American, failed...epically.
P.S. as a Latino, myself...we are better off recognizing people as individuals, rather than organizing as a political ideology or strategy. I feel that your closing comments on finding "our" identity as a struggle for the latino community is one of division in general, because you'd prefer we all be united under one belief, rather than what we as individuals think. Why do you think so many of the Latino's you'd purport to be on the wrong side of the spectrum, don't all of a sudden care about Latinos?
Yea..its like shes saying if " youre not with us youre against us" and that just excerbates the situation and already makes the situation worse..especially when you are coming to another persons country where people have built things and youre just coming here. You dont want to try and seperate yourself if you want the opportunity..you should try and "do as the Romans do" per se but still be true to yourself
It doesn't matter, this dude hates other non-white people. He hates anyone who came here after him. Professor earlier mentioned it pretty clearly as the last on the boat concept. It's prevalent, and has been done in previous generations to the Irish, Polish, Italians, etc.
Great video, thx Paola. I'm half-Cuban myself (child of an exile which is...first or second-generation?), and I can absolutely understand why people would oppose something with which they've had such visceral negative experiences (e.g., if they or someone in their family was imprisoned/murdered for criticizing the government), BUT, I still can't reconcile my background with supporting Trump or his immigration policies. Warning: long rant ahead. (1) Cuba-like Central America and/or the Western Hemisphere as a whole-dealt with U.S. imperialism/interventionism that, in many cases, made living conditions and political climates worse for the people who lived there. For Cuba, it was the 1902 Platt Amendment; for Central America, it was the Reagan-era drug war. There are also the right-wing dictatorships that the U.S. installed because of anti-communism, U.S.-led military coups...and so on. It's weird to see how Cubans/Venezuelans cannot see the common ground they share with Central Americans; they're all suffering from some degree of damage resulting from U.S. imperialism...which makes the double-standard in our immigration policy make even less sense. (2) Apart from the rather obvious ideological reasoning behind Cuba's privileged status in immigration law (e.g., those fleeing Cuba in the early waves during the 50s/60s were mostly seeking political [anti-communist] asylum, which fit the Cold War sentiments of the time), I wonder if there's a racial component involved too. Those early waves in the 50s/60s were (I think) mostly upper-middle-class, white Europeans. This time period coincides with the U.S.'s Civil Rights movement. Perhaps immigration law for Cuban exiles was/is so lax BECAUSE they were white? (Later waves of migration from Cuba aren't quite as white/rich, but the Cuban Adjustment Act was from the 60s, hence this question.) Since Hispanic/Latinx is not a race, again it makes our immigration policy an arbitrary double-standard. But perhaps that's obvious already. (3) I should also mention: I grew up in southeast Texas, with a number of Mexicans, Central Americans, etc. living nearby. The colorism/racism I overheard against them was sickening. More than once I remember expressing confusion to adults around me saying, "but they're Hispanic/Latinx like me/us, why do you look down on them?" and usually their answers had something to do with how they were lower-class and had more indigenous heritage. Perhaps that came from talk radio hosts they listened to who called Mexicans "dark and lazy, unlike Cubans," or some other gross sh!t like that. (4) Many people in this video mention Trump's anti-socialism/communism rhetoric as to why they support him, which makes sense on paper but in other ways doesn't. Something about Trump (maybe it's the demeanor) reminds me of what I imagine a far-right Latin American dictator/strongman might've been like. Of course, the anti-immigrant rhetoric is off-putting too. The fact that so many Cuban-American politicians and others opposing communism just blindly agree with everything Trump says regardless of the other horrible things he goes for, makes me infinitely ashamed to be of Cuban descent. (5) With Bernie Sanders, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I think he's right about how so much of the system is broken and needs reform. On the other hand, I'm still uncomfortable with the comments he made about Castro. IDK.
Lol yeah she asks the person a question then cuts away to address it while she has no one to challenger her views. How lame of an interview tactic. If you can call it an interview

I don't understand why all Latinos must be grouped together as one. Is this because they share a common language? "Latinos" have the misfortune of being celebrated as one when there are huge differences, races, cultures amongst all the "Latino"countries. I'm waiting for us to lump all English speakers together (Jamaica, Ireland, New Zealand, etc... and call them all Englishes 🤷🏻♂️
I think this doesnt compute on american brains. They are white latinos, they are black latinos, they are mestizos latinos, even asian ones. They need to "update" their "race" classification. I mean, by american logic Tom Brandy Wife isnt white, someone who is descendent from Germans. Not to mention, the white kid in the end failed, the guy clearly wasnt white and he didnt want to admit, not to mention he went straight to insults. And other thing, the Spaniards did kill alot of natives, but it was tge British/americans who truly had a wiping out policy. The spanish policy, despite having a class and race elite, they did mix alot with the natives. The British/americans just conquered the land and mostly exterminated them, no race mixing. I have a lot of California Mexican family. Many many of them are more left wing bc they want more family to come over from Mexico illegally and they align themselves w the left bc of that issue. Whereas I think Cubans see that not everyone can be let in bc like that guy said ‘not every one of the ppl coming are coming with good intentions’ - and that in and of itself has so much depth to go through. I know that’s a really “triggering” statement to some. I could be wrong but I THINK that’s the angle they are coming from. I know it’s super nuanced.
Right? I might be out of my mind here but aren’t university students adults who can vote and join the military, be punished in a court of law as adults? I must be imagining things 🙄
In regards to Cubans, I’ve heard from my Cuban friends that the Cuban immigration experience is entirely different from most Latinos from Central and South America. Biggest difference is they’re guaranteed citizenship with having one FOOT on American soil as opposed to everyone else who isn’t offered the same thing and has no choice but to live off the radar.
There’s something else they don’t tell you, all the white Cubans in Miami are some of the most racist Latinos you ever meet. They never bring up, what was it like in Cuba before Castro, and see how good they had it, compared to the mestizo class, blacks, and other mix race. Castro changed all that, wanted equality for everyone, up till he went for communism.
You're about 4 years behind on the "wet foot, dry foot rule". That rule for Cubans does not exist anymore and that rule was ended by Obama. Cubans are treated like every other immigrant trying to gain access to the U.S.
It is important to remember that nobody owes you anything. No, they do not have to live off the radar. They always have the choice of walking tall with honor and respect by obeying the law. If you cross the border illegally you are a criminal.

Democrats aren't a leftists. Left-wing idealogies are anti-capitalist. Democrats are pro capitalism, whether it's reformed or not. They're essentially over glorified intersectional right wingers.
@El Chingon Is that why they're so adamant on capitalism, and mixed economies? Democrats are extremely anti-communist. Hell, California, which gets hailed as one of the most Liberal states in the U.S., still doesn't have protections against employees with Leftist ideals, and doesn't recognize the vast majority of actual Left-wing parties, which Democrats are not, since Left wing idealogies are inherently anti-capitalist. Democrats are overglorified right wingers and centrists that love identity politics, much like Republicans, but they attempt to promote the smokescreen of equality through performative activism while refraining to address actual class issues. Democrat are not controlled by "Marxists" or "Leftists." It's overwhelming controlled by bourgeoisie politicians. Do you think even for a moment that individuals like Nancy Pelosi, who has an annual salary of $150,000 and has been accumulating wealth for 30+ years, is going to want to be taxed more, or have the redistribution of wealth, or the abolition of wealth as a whole? The very same Democrats that are anti-gun, which I remind you that Leftists are NOT. The very same Democrats that are pro-military, and continuously increase the military's budget. After all, the House of Representatives is mostly Democrats and the House has the Power of the Purse. And you talk about "Communist pRoPaGaNdA," do you mean the very same one hails the Red and Lavender Scare as greatness, or the one doesn't even teach the basis of Leftist ideals, properly and accurately, in Government classes? And might I remind you, Leftists aren't the only ones, who aren't immune to propanganda. I'd recommend reading "50 Ideas you really need to know: POLITICS by Ben Dupré" if you're truly looking to learn the basis of differences within and outside political idealogies and politics as a whole.
@El Chingon I understand where you're coming from, but I do think that if we truly are going to implement left wing policy, which is bound to happen in a muticultural society whether it's on a small or large scale, people should be throughly educated on idealogies both on the left and right, and the difference between justice and plain cruelty. The difference between authoritarianism and libertarianism, which in many cases gets confused for Left wing policy. The amount of people I've heard in real life and seen online, who straight define socialism or communism as "when the government does stuff" or "when the government is heavily involved in people's lives" is headbanging frustrating. By default, there can be no communist society. Communism is a stateless, moneyless, classless, society. Socialism on the other hand is when the worker's control the means of production; socialism can exist on a country and global level. Both definitions are relatively easy, yet McCarthyism is so heavily ingrained into the U.S. and along with other developed nations that individuals misconstrue meanings by their own willingness or subconsciously. There's been many left revolutionaries, who've genuinely brought up their nations or regions through left ideals, but they're few. Why? Because building a nation or region up from the ground with little to no support from the national government is hard while also maintaining your foothold. Then, there's the left revolutionaries, who've genuinely wanted greatness for their countries, but they've failed and succumbed to tyranny or get assassinated/barred before they can actual accomplish their vision, which almost always leads the matter to tyranny. There has been a shift towards left wing policies lately, but I do hope those policies aren't authoritative. If you're U.S. based, I personally believe that we should be more concerned with the more authoritative policies of the current administration, along with the remains of previous administrations. The U.S. pulled out the UN human rights team(something along those lines), so they can avoid heavy scrutiny from UN Human rights(whatever) members because of the U.S' reaction and treatment of BLM protestors recently, which violate human right laws/Geneva policies. Around 3-5 months ago, the U.S. government was attempting to pass(they might of passed it) a bill, which would widen the loophole for companies to sell information to police stations regarding social media and virtually take away all your privacy in regards to social media. In the past few years, ICE has also lost over 3,000 individuals, a large fraction CHILDREN. Just recently, the U.S. pulled out of WHO, but the effects won't be felt until next year because it's a year long process. Authoritarianism has no place in countries that tout to be free.

I feel that your closing comments on finding "our" identity as a struggle for the latino community is one of division in general, because you'd prefer we all be united under one belief, rather than what we as individuals think. Why do you think so many of the Latino's you'd purport to be on the wrong side of the spectrum, don't all of a sudden care about Latinos?
well said.
Yea..its like shes saying if " youre not with us youre against us" and that just excerbates the situation and already makes the situation worse..especially when you are coming to another persons country where people have built things and youre just coming here. It doesn't matter, this dude hates other non-white people. He hates anyone who came here after him. Professor earlier mentioned it pretty clearly as the last on the boat concept. It's prevalent, and has been done in previous generations to the Irish, Polish, Italians, etc.

He said 60% from Spain. Spain is in Europe and Europeans are considered white. It would've been different if he said 60% Cuban.
@Les Damnes in USA Spanish is used for anyone speaking Spanish
IDK.
Very well thought out response plus very balanced.
Thanks! I was hoping it would be.

I don't understand why all Latinos must be grouped together as one. Is this because they share a common language? I mean, by american logic Tom Brandy Wife isnt white, someone who is descendent from Germans. Not to mention, the white kid in the end failed, the guy clearly wasnt white and he didnt want to admit, not to mention he went straight to insults.
And other thing, the Spaniards did kill alot of natives, but it was tge British/americans who truly had a wiping out policy. The spanish policy, despite having a class and race elite, they did mix alot with the natives. The British/americans just conquered the land and mostly exterminated them, no race mixing.
@Joe Mamama The legal citizens are perfectly fine. Welcome, my fellow Americans. The illegals need to gtfo.
That wet foot dry foot policy hasn't been a thing since like 2015...

Ironic a white person telling a cuban what he can't accomplish..left ideology! Reason I left the democrats!
Democrats aren't a leftists. Left-wing idealogies are anti-capitalist. Democrats are pro capitalism, whether it's reformed or not. They're essentially over glorified intersectional right wingers.
Cubans in the US are mostly white so?
