I realy liked that Maresca is open to invert either the RB or LB. Its not set in stone and the system is flexibel enough to deal with the situation at hand. Overall a pretty decent presser by Maresca. Clear and confident without the usualy waffle about certain topics. Like when he was asked for the 2nd time about the Enzo topic. And he answered sure ive talked to the players. Im working with them every day in training. Not leaving any doubts or room for speculations. I hope the Board will give him the time needed and not again pull the trigger after one season. IMO there is great potential. We just need to be a bit patience. With both the gaffer and the team.
As Chelsea fans we subconsciously avoid thinking too much about James injury history but soon as games start coming in quick succession, we begin worrying & suffering in silence 😅

We're not goiung to have marauding, overlapping FB's under his system. So in possession the FB either needs to be one of the back 3, or invert into midfield. Rees can do either, Malo could only invert (he can't be a right sided CB), Chilwell I'm not sure can do either to be honest but his best bet is probably to invert, Cucu we know can invert. Personally I would invert Rees or Malo, but it leaves an issue in who plays at LB out of possession and in the back 3 in possession? Anyway, all in all he was impressive I thought.

I became more confident that Gusto could do well as an inverted full back was after the few occasions that he drifted in field last season when combining with Palmer. He is so comfortable on the ball, agile with the ball at his feet, and able to evade pressure well in congested areas, similar to Reece The only full back that I was concerned about was Chilwell because he seemed much more uncomfortable with the ball compared to without it. He felt very immobile because he is so left footed, meaning he would hesitate to turn onto his right foot, forcing him down the line or to pass backwards

Oh dear, gusto was playing right back in the defensive phase and high right wing in the attacking so Palmer could tuck in. He had the best lungs in our team to able him to do that. He tucked in a few times when Palmer stayed wide forming a box midfield with Caicedo next to him and Enzo and Gallagher ahead of him. Rare, but he did it. It was only when gusto got injured that inverting Cucu and playing a CB in the defensive phase as a right back we changed that (Axel or Trev). Prior Cucu, Colwill or Badi were defining the left back position. I’ve been saying the entire time because you are inverting a left back or right back both Reece and Gusto can play at the same time taking turns to invert or becoming the third CB. That a player inverting needs to be good at pressing, calm in possession and able to defend the flank one on one. Both fit the profile. Gusto is further back on his development but he chews up ground quicker than James when counter pressing. He is the ideal player to invert next to Enzo. James next to Caicedo depending who starts where. Due to multiple reasons that I can’t be bothered to go into. Reece becoming the third CB he can occasionally help to overload the right putting in crosses from the half space which is the most dangerous cross when defenders sit deep.
Our RB's are better off inverting (ie. Reece, Gusto). But depending on opposition, our LB (ie. Cucu or whoever else) might be better off to invert. I am glad Maresca is felixble regarding that depending on who' the opposiition is, who is in better form or more fit, etc.
I think having attacking players that can play anywhere across the front 3 positions is the way modern football has gone ( the days of out and out number 9,s is becoming a thing of the past ) but I don’t think in defence apart from inverting fullbacks we should be playing players out of position, centre half’s should play as centre half’s and fullbacks as fullbacks ( an example from last season was playing Colwill as a left back which just wasted his best qualities in my opinion )

Before Covid Chelsea always charged for pre season games, plus Chelsea tv used to cost money this is normal lots of clubs charge for pre season.

Aaaannnddd I just watched the most boring 30 minutes of football CFC has played since Graham Potter was sacked. I didn't expect five goals or anything, but to see us pass the ball back and forth, side to side, and backwards only is piss poor. This was the fear many of us had in getting rid of Poch, who's style was attack minded and exciting...and bringing in this side to side and backwards passing game of Maresca. Flashbacks, nightmares....not another year of this shit....
